Here is a short video from a recent investigation. The flashlight in the shot turned on and off on its own seemingly in respone to questions asked by myself and P.S.I. team member Roger Hart. For more information on P.S.I. please check us out at www.paranormalsurvey.com.

  • Great video Ryan! Have you ever had this type of response using the same flashlight? Did it happen again since the video? Can you talk about the location where this was and the type of activity surrounding it?

  • Ryan says:

This video / investigation took place on the 28th of October. We had a similar experience with this flashlight once before, about three months ago. But it hadn’t happened since then until last week. Both times, when the flashlight turned on and off on it’s own, were at the same location. I work at a church (I may have mentioned this before) and I believe it to be highly active. My group likes to spend time there and try to capture any kind of evidence that we can.

The activity at the church is substantial to say the least. Multiple reports of full apparitions, footsteps on the roof, crashing sounds from the attic storage spaces, cribs being stacked on top of each other as high as the ceiling, disembodied voices – that’s the ’short’ list…

I have done multiple experiments to try to recreate the flashlight occurrence, but it has only ever turned on and off by itself during two investigations at this church.

  • Definitely interesting, Ryan. Thanks for sharing!

  • Prior to conducting this kind of experimentation, it would be prudent to deconstruct the flashlight on camera and then put it back together (still on camera) showing each component clearly, so the viewer can see for certain that the flashlight hasn’t been tampered with.

And, is that seriously a K2 meter? Do a little reading.

  • Ryan says:

Thanks for the feedback guys! Martin, the idea to take apart the flashlight on camera was really good. We will do that soon. I am a little bit confused by your comment about the K2 meter. From what you wrote it doesn’t look like you think very highly of these meters. Can you tell me why you don’t like them? Or point me in the right direction so that I can read up myself?

I do like to think I do a decent amount of research on equipment before our team uses it. We are aware of the K2 picking up cell phone signals – we turn off all cell phones or switch them to ‘airplane mode’ on all investigations. But this frequency disturbance was the only con that I could find.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

  • No, you’re correct, I don’t think very highly of them (K2) at all.

For starters, the K2 is highly unreliable as an emf detector, it is far too sensitive and will almost certainly give more false positives than anything else, in addition to it’s succeptibility to interference from radio, CB, cellular signals and the like.

It reads much to large of a range of EM frequencies, which is also why it’s prone to interference, which in turn makes any reading impossible to quantify and/or to link to any physical phenomenon in the immediate environment.

Have you had to modify the switch to a toggle, or have you used tape or some other such thing to keep it activated, or did you purchase yours already modified?

Lastly, I question why ghost hunters are trying to record emf readings in the first place. There is no evidence, other than anecdotal testimony and at most strong coincidence, to connect EM spikes or drops with ghostly phenomenon.

So, with the above in mind, can you answer why you’ve chosen to use the K2 in this particular investigation, and what it’s readings mean in relation to the flashlight event?

  • Ryan says:

Thanks for the quick response Martin. We are aware that the K2 reads a larger range than most other meters – this is not our primary meter. We use two Mel-8704R Pro Nav units in our investigations, the K2 came bundled with one for free. We bring it along with as a spare. The Mel meters were being used, they were just not on camera. This K2 came with the on / off switch, it is the newer generation that doesn’t require a quarter to operate =)
In the flashlight video the K2 in the shot did not report any disturbance during the 30 minute session.

P.S.I. uses emf meters for two main reasons, and there is never a moment when we say “2.5mg’s on the meter! There IS a ghost here!!”

First, we use emf meters to get to know the location. Areas that have constant high levels of electro magnetic disturbance (older buildings with unshielded wires) can have significant and seemingly “paranormal” (nausea, disorientation, hallucination) effects on the people exposed. This is one way to help determine whether or not there is actual activity in a location.

Second, we use emf meters as a way to focus our search. An area with high em readings without explanation (no man made source) can be a great location to try to capture evidence – EVP, Video, Still Pictures etc.

We use all of our equipment in hopes of one day quantifying what is “paranormal”. We find that emf meters can help point us in the right direction – I see that as a positive. But, like I said before, emf readings alone are never used to determine paranormal activity.

  • That, Ryan, is an excellent answer. Though I do still question the use of the K2 meter for any purpose (it’s just too unreliable). The point of my questioning was to illustrate that there is no connection between ghostly phenomenon and EM radiation. Any and all connections are the product of erroneous beliefs and not fact or science.

I would suggest that if you are allowing EM readings to “focus” your investigations, you may be missing out on opportunities for data collection, but I do commend you for attempting to abate any psychological influence that may be asserted on your team by outside influences.
