In the past few days, I have been posting audio pulled from my regular Olympus recorders as I’ve heard it in analyzing the audio. The evidence comes from three different Olympus recorders, a DS-40, a WS-210S, and WS-300M.

I very deliberately listened to the Olympus recorders first before listening to the audio that was captured on the hi-def H4 at the same time. I listened to the H4 audio last night, which was saved in an uncompressed format. There was a huge difference between the Olympus recorders, which save files in a compressed format, with the hi-def H4, which saves the files in an uncompressed format.

Here is what I discovered. In the cases where the audio was redundant, many things that came across as a whisper or a strange voice wound up being clearly audible as something completely natural on the Zoom H4. For instance, a whisper was actually someone scraping a stick on decking. A “disembodied” voice was actually someone talking quietly to the person next to them.

There was one piece of audio that is inexplicable to me on both hi-def audio and low-def audio, although I’ve sent it to Dreamsinger, so there’s a good chance that he’ll have a good explanation.

I’ll post below, side-by-side, so that you can hear the audio I am talking about. Here are the circumstances:

-No cell phone service, so cell phones, while with us, didn’t work
-We didn’t have walkie talkies
-There are no phone lines or communications wires in the area we were – it is a relatively wild and untouched part of a hiking trail. There is a snow shed that is about 3/4 mile long – but we were about 100 yards outside of the snow shed at the time I captured this recording.
-There were four people present. Me, Jim, my friend Bill and a 13 year-old boy named Bobby. The two high-pitched voices you hear talking are me and Bobby. The male voice is Bill. Jim was maybe 200 yards further down the trail with a video camera.
-When you first hear the voice that comes in, it comes in under Bobby and continues talking under me, which rules out both of us as the source of the voice. No one else was with us who had a high-pitched voice.
-There were birds singing – we were outdoors. There was no breeze blowing. It was clear, sunny and about 75 degrees at 7 pm (about).
-The closest people to us were 3/4 of a mile down at the other end of the snow shed. No hikers came from either direction for about 45 minutes on either side of capturing this audio – it was pretty late in the day and hikers were very sparse at that time.
-The snow shed does send sound up and down it that echoes to some extent. We were probably a good 100 yards away from the end of the snow shed.
-The H4 and the Olympus were together. I was about two feet from Bill, who was carrying the Olympus at the time. To me, the voice sounds clearer on the Olympus than the hi-def H4, even though they were directionally pointed in the same way and close together.
-There was only one other female (or child) present on site. She was 1/2 to 3/4 miles away.

Okay. Looking for explanations. Tell me what you all think.
