So – last night during the podcast recording (which will be up next week), we got something kind of weird. A voice says “Boppy” and everyone denies it was them. Our most likely suspect is Cheryl, although she swears there is NO WAY she said “boppy”. Plus – she can’t make that voice. We’ve tried to get her to do it – and it isn’t coming out.
Here’s what happened. We were recording on Skype. The panel was me (Karen), Cheryl, Chad, Teresa, JD and Shannon (Sylvia). I just wound up – and said that Cheryl and Chad had a baseball game to go to. Cheryl remembers saying “sorry” – but that doesn’t appear on the recording. Instead, just this loud “Boppy”. No one is claiming it.
My friend Doug, who has been a sound guy for a number of years, says that there is no way that “sorry” can turn into “boppy,” so it is an anomaly.
Boppy is a yiddish nickname for grandfather, however…..
Here it is. What do you think? I’m giving a short one, and one in a longer context.
Here is the WAV form of Boppy. On the top (top two) is me saying “Boppy” in the same inflection. On the bottom (bottom two) is the wav form of the original “Boppy”.
We tried to recreate Boppy last night. Check it out here.

Hello everyone! The Boppy incident (LOL) is a strange one. While I think the voice saying “Boppy” kind of sounds like my voice, I didn’t say “Boppy.” I didn’t even know the word Boppy or that it meant “grandfather” in yiddish until Shannon said something about it after the podcast.
I don’t think that is me. I remembered saying the word, “sorry,” however, I don’t hear that word on the audio recording. I’m wondering if I even said Sorry out loud.
This one baffles me. I can hear myself laugh after you hear the word “Boppy”, followed closely by Teresa laughing. I think that maybe we were responding to JD’s kind of funny “OK.” I don’t remember hearing the word “Boppy” during the recording.
Maybe two of us were talking at the same time and an audio glitch mixed those two words up. But … Sorry and Boppy are very different, except for the Y sound at the end.
We did try and recreate having me say Boppy in the same way it was recorded, but we couldn’t make it sound the same.
Like I said, I’m kind of baffled on this one.
The emails have been flying this morning as we try to figure this out. I think I should point out that we didn’t hear “boppy”. I did, as I was editing the podcast. I quickly cut it, named it WTF (it seemed appropriate) and sent it to Cheryl since she was my most likely suspect. We’re not saying this is an EVP. We’re not sure what it is. Shannon does live in a haunted school house. I dunno – baffling is a good word.
What is striking to me is the strangeness of the voice.
Yes – how on EARTH did you get your voice to sound like that? And who the heck is Boppy, anyway???
It wasn’t me!!! lol
I looked up the Yiddish language, in addition to being of Jewish origin, it was also spoken in Poland prior to World War II, right around the time of the Dybbuk Box. Connection?
Heyyy….what if Boppy is something we conjured up like Philip in the Philip Experiment. I’ve been wanting to create an entity. Maybe that’s what we’re doing with Boppy!
Taking Chad’s line of thinking a bit further, I don’t want to give too much away about the podcast before it goes online, but SOMEONE did mock the box during the podcast. I’m just sayin’ …
Initially, I thought it sounded like Teresa, but at the time we were recording, I can’t remember hearing it. And I refuse to speak anymore about the “square thing that will not be named.” That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it….
Well – here’s the deal. If I hadn’t been right there having the conversation, then there is NO WAY that I would even give this even a second thought. It sounds totally faked. It isn’t. You’ll notice that the first file is named WTF. That’s the clip I grabbed to send to Cheryl as soon as I heard it, because WTF was all I could think. The more I listen to it, the more bizarre the whole thing becomes.
Jim had an interesting theory of IP switching. My husband was on the Internet at the time – he says he was on a BB and not doing anything multimedia – but could there have been an IP switching issue that leaked through into our Skype recording?
I don’t know what an IP switching issue is . . .
I don’t have any idea what Boppy is and i don’t think i could even guess.
I had to ask Jim about IP switching – he said that because we are on a router, and more than one person using the router/internet at once, maybe an artifact crept in from his browsing into my podcast. Who knows – it is a possible explanation – but one more computer savvy than I would need to make that determination.
If it was me, I wasn’t saying “Boppy”. I would have been saying “Sorry”. I listened to this a lot yesterday and am back on it today.
I know the page themes (visualizations) on Media Player are not really a technical measuring device, but when this sound comes out, it comes out on a different vocal level than anyone else, speaking or laughing. We all know Karen’s voice level is always lower than everyone else’s: That shows up on my visualizations. This one tops all of us. I don’t know about IP switching, but I do believe that this was some glitch in Skype.
And for the record, it was Shannon that said that “square thing that shall not be named” sucks.
After Karen and I recreated Boppy last night on Skype, I’m convinced it wasn’t me that said Boppy. It does not sound like anyone else (Karen, Chad, JD, Teresa, or Shannon) conducting the podcast either. Audio glitch? Maybe. EVP? Possibly.
Well take a look at the recreation – see what you think.
