In colonial times here in America and I would say up to the 19 century a signifcant cause of death for women was catching on fire when their dresses got to close to the fire while cooking. Not sure what the dye in the clothing was made of but may have been a source/cause of flammability. Maybe someone with more knowledge could answer.

Which reminds me of the song...."Knights in White Satin." Now that kind of makes me wonder...if Knights wore white satin they must not of lasted long on the battlefield. Besides what if their enemies wore armor? would the satin wearing knoghts be made fun of? Or maybe their opponants would fall down laughing and the white satin wearing knights would just ride up and kill them. Mmm. Food for thought.

I was watching this Ancient Discoveries show and they were talking about old school weaponry and they had a case where a militant arm of some brotherhood held out for awhile against overwhelming odds in the Holy Land (I guess) but their secret weapon was NOT the holy handgrenade but WAS in fact essentially a flaming wheel they covered in pitch. Apparently the Muslims armys dressed in flowing robes that were highly flammable and well I guess you can imagine how the rest worked out.

Now just wait a minute everyone...He distinctly asked about the Black Church of Satin and I for one think he has questions about fabric, I'll never understand why people are so prejudiced against satin, I for one find it to be a delightful fabric and truth be known, if given a choice, PREFER black, but that's me, hope you're able to get a few reams of Satin while in San Diego, don't forget to check out the Zoo it's wonderful.
