Love those cute little gargoyle statues that are sold in the garden stores. All over NYC, mostly the churches have gargoyles. They are there to keep evil out.

My wife loves gargoyles as well. We have several around the house, including one that overlooks the front porch.

Here's another one. Christmas Tree Balls, were used originally to keep away bad spirits.

This thread now has made a song run through my head since its inception.

Where I find superstition especially fascinating is in athletes. It is pretty darn common in athletics, especially as you move up into the higher performance levels.

Also present in other places – ballet dancers wish each other "merde" before a performance because it is considered bad luck to say "good luck", for instance. Where do these beliefs come into being?

Yes, I always wanted to know how people go into this pattern of behavior.

Here's another one about Thai Fire Lanterns and Jack-O-Lanterns, etc.

Didn't Friday the 13th arise out of some slaughter of the Knights Templar?

No. I didn't click the link. I'm lazy that way.

Wikipedia says:

Another theory about the origin of the superstition traces the event to the arrest of the legendary Knights Templar. According to one expert:

The Knights Templar were a monastic military order founded in Jerusalem in 1118 C.E., whose mission was to protect Christian pilgrims during the Crusades. Over the next two centuries, the Knights Templar became extraordinarily powerful and wealthy. Threatened by that power and eager to acquire their wealth, King Philip secretly ordered the mass arrest of all the Knights Templar in France on Friday, October 13, 1307 – Friday the 13th.[4]

Almost is completely correct. By the time they had dealt with the Grand Master Jacques DeMolay

the date took on it's own infamy in Europe. An apology was given to the Knights Templars this year

by the Vatican. An apology to a group that is supposed to no longer exist. I wonder if they accepted the apology?

I am superstitious of dusting. Can I stop? Plus, the vacuum seems demonic.

It's the folding and separating that makes my eyes roll.

I think a lot of superstition comes from "the old country". Our ancestors bring it here & it carries on from generation to generation.

I don't know why but I have one remaining superstition for true. I can't talk ill about the dead. It gives me the whillies and I don't understand why.

Sure you can you just have to pick a deserving deceased person. Let's try Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin

or Rev. Jim Jones. It gets easier as the candidates for discussion get more sinister. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

After Falwell's death, Christopher Hitchens suggested he be given an enema, enabling him to be buried in a shoebox. That's just mean, but funny. Guess I'm not as superstitious about this as I thought.
