Okay, I mostly avoid this forum for personal reasons but I have a question and Google isn't my friend in this matter. I can not provide a lot of details since it would compromise patient confidentiality. But here is what I'm wondering.

A woman had a small sack of black rocks in her bra over her heart. She also had a bottle of virgin olive oil with crosses marked on it with a permanent marker and with part of the Lord's prayer also. Then around every door in a room the frame is marked with crosses of the oil all around it.

Any idea what religion this could be? My partner has seen some of it in Messianic Jews rituals regarding the oil. We found some stuff that the rocks could be called Apache Tear Drops and are believed to be protective.

This is just a little mystery for me that I would like to solve.

Thanks in advance.

That's interesting. Neither Google nor Ask were my friends either. You wouldn't think that crosses would be related to anything Jewish. Maybe she came up with her own rituals for some reason.

Don't know. I peeked inside the bag when I opened it and it had about 25 or so rocks that were black, smooth and shiny. I first thought of the movie "Knowing", I think that was the movie.

I went to Wiki and looked up olive oil, according to the web page Catholic & orthodox churches use olive oil for baptism and anointing the sick. Was the oil mixed with a perfume agent? If it was scented the Catholic church uses it for Sacred Chrism or confirmation (strengthing the Holy Spirit). I hope this helps, still trying to find something on the rocks. What part of the Lord's Prayer was with the oil?

To be honest I wasn't going around sticking my nose close to the door frames.

As for the bottle: "In the name of our Lord, his son and the Holy Spirit" or something close to that. Then it had the three crosses around the bottle as well. I guess to purify it.

I wonder if the three crosses is a reference to the crucifixion at Golgotha and the cross of Jesus and the two criminals. Or the three crosses could be a reference to the Trinity.

It could stand for the trinity, not sure, but wikipedia does have a page on the trinity. As far as the stones, I have no clue, they could be Apache Tear Drops. She could be mixing a few different religions to suit what her belief is . I will check to see if any Native American cultures have a belief in the trinity.

Does it sound anything like Northern Mexico Santeria? The water bottle is common but the black rocks have

me puzzled. Usually anything black ie.. wax, hair and or cloth is bound by a black string and used to curse

someone. Thrown into a house or a car or placed in a drawer. Were there any "Saints" prayer cards above

the doors or stuck in the jamb trim? Just an idea because it sounds so similiar?

The native americans believe in life, nature and spirit. There is no one religion shared as each tribe had their own beliefs. I am still researching some more to learn what else they believed in.

Sounds like it may be Coptic Orthodox to me. Although practiced all over the world, I'm sure its mostly Egyptian.

It's a mystery to me…

I suppose that a small part of the issue may be that even if she is part of a mostly mainstream religion as a whole, she may have been also involved with a smaller sect of it that has other beliefs.

If I was going to lean towards anything over another though, I'd go with voodoo. May sound strange, but there are many facets of Catholicism involved with it, and the rocks could have been ceremonial in nature…Perhaps as something to absorb evil spirits or some such thing. All of the crosses and prayers written around the home almost makes me think that she may have felt that she was being possessed by a spirit that was making her sick…

If I ever get a Haitian patient in the ER again, I'll see if they will tell me.

I was wondering the same thing on scene about voodoo but I didn't voice it since I'm not that knowledgeable about it.

D'oh hang on, I must be slipping or something.

In a perhaps interesting coincidence, I was flipping through a bible in the pew at mass yesterday and I was looking in the Song of Solomon in the OT and saw a passage that said something like "my beloved is like a bag of myrrh between my (girl parts in the chest region)" Coincidence? Probably. I get the feeling that this woman was taking symbols and using them to remember a loved one, is my guess. Were the crosses around a bedroom door? Personally, I think its about grief rather than a religion.

They were around all doors leading out of the room and also closet doors.

I thought I might find something in her obit but that was a dead end, pardon the pun.

Are you sure they were rocks?

These are called quince seeds; highly used in old Catholicism; quince seeds to prevent earthbound entities from entering a building,

Olive oil is as well.

Breaking Demonic Oppression in the Believer's Life

If a home is inhabited by evil spirits, one may go through it room by room and break any evil power by sending away the spirits and inviting the Holy Spirit to take over. One may seal each room with anointing oil. One can use oil to make the sign of the cross above each doorway. One can do the same for every object or jewelry that may contain evil spirits. Pray for God to lead you to each item. Cleanse them by breaking the evil power in them, by the power of the Holy Spirit, in the Name of Jesus. Then bless them with God's power, or destroy them.

Exodus 30:22-33 22The Lord said to Moses, 23"Take the finest spices – 500 shekels of free-flowing myrrh; half that amount, that is, 250 shekels of fragrant cinnamon; 250 shekels fragrant cane; 24500 shekels cassia (all according to the standard of the sanctuary shekel); together with a hin of olive oil. 25Blend them into sacred anointing oil, perfumed ointment expertly prepared. 26With this sacred anointing oil you shall anoint the meeting tent, the ark of the commandments, 27the table and all its appurtenances, the lamp-stand and its appurtenances, the altar of incense, 28the altar of holocausts with all its appurtenances, and the laver with its base 29When you have consecrated them, they shall be most sacred; whatever touches them shall be sacred. 30Aaron and his sons you shall also anoint and consecrate as My priests. 31To the Israelites you shall say, "As sacred anointing oil, this shall belong to Me throughout your generations. 32It may NOT be used in any ordinary anointing of the body, nor may you make any other oil of a like mixture. It is sacred and shall be treated as sacred by you. 33Whoever prepares a perfume like this, or whoever puts any of this on a layman shall be cut off from his kinsmen (executed)." (See below websites and scripture discussing anointing oil and incense.)

Thanks Regan that's one of the best answers I've seen. I'm pretty sure they were rocks. They looked like rocks and sounded like rocks when handling the bag. I didn't take them out so beyond that I'm not sure.
