OfflineI didn't find much information on the forum threads about purgatory. I didn't find purgatory in the bible but the Catholic religion states that it exists. This web link has some good information about purgatory. http://www.newadvent…then/12575a.htm My readings tell me that theologians started the concept of purgatory centuries ago. If purgatory really does exist, I view it as a state of being and not a physical place.
I see that there is a reincarnation thread already started by NoWhammies http://www.paranorma…__fromsearch__1 I plan to be adding comments to that thread in the future. I feel that reincarnation and the concept of purgatory are related. I am not really sure if I lived prior lives but I have strong feelings that I have.
Could it be that the many spirits among us are lost souls awaiting to be reborn to atone for past sins? That is not to say that all spirits are awaiting reincarnation. If purgatory exists as the Catholics believe, could having to live a present difficult life filled with suffering be atonement for cruel deeds in a past life? Is reincarnation and purgatory related?

OfflineNightwatcher, I don't know much about purgatory…only heard about it because (1) I have cousins that grew up in the Catholic Faith and (2) it is mentioned a lot in popular culture.
Interesting question. I do believe that suffering comes from a lack of understanding one's true mission in life. Hey, if we were happy all the time wouldn't we become complacent?
I hope this life isn't all about atonement, but searching for MORE. If I am in a life of atonement now, I must have really been a creep in my last.
BTW, Nightwatcher, I think this thread would fit perfectly into World Religion and Spirituality. If it hadn't been so long since I actually did this I could move it there!

I think that it would be a wonderful idea if you move the thread into the World Religion and Spirituality section. I see that there is a Reincarnation thread started there. I too must have been a real creep or heartless person in a former life. My present life has been a struggle.
I am a non-practicing Catholic and went to Catholic school for 8 years. I don't have any theories about Purgatory, only my thoughts. Besides Purgatory, the Catholic religion also believes or believed in Limbo. Limbo is a place or state of being where unbaptized innocent babies go when they pass away. That is what I was taught when I went to Catholic school.

Moved, though I will keep the thread open in the Off Topic Forum for a while as well.
OfflineAlthough purgatory is not found in the Bible, references that appear to allude to it are found in the apocrypha books which the Catholics also include in their bible. Further, they rely on revelations of their popes for religious beliefs and practices, making it a christian religion that doesn't just go by their Bible. I do not think that the Catholics see their purgatory as anything but an atoning for sin spot where the soul moves onto heaven after it is complete.
As for reincarnation, there are various viewpoints on it, all equally valid since non of the views has been proven to be more accurate than another. As you point out, there are some that think you suffer in this life because of a past life, hence the old saying "I must have been such a bad person in another life". But other systems don't look at reincarnation as a means of punishment because of a former life, but rather a means of progression towards an ultimate being fit only for the spiritual world. Others look at it as we come back by choice, but are not forced into reincarnation. Maybe we are adventures and there was still things we wanted to learn and experience here (bad past life or not). There probably are other views but far be it for me to think of off the top of my head.
