Bahá’í Religion

Throughout history, God has revealed Himself to humanity through a series of divine Messengers, whose teachings guide and educate us and provide the basis for the advancement of human society. These Messengers have included Abraham, Krishna, Zoroaster, Moses, Buddha, Jesus, and Muhammad. Their religions come from the same Source and are in essence successive chapters of one religion from God.

Bahá’u’lláh, the latest of these Messengers, brought new spiritual and social teachings for our time. His essential message is of unity. He taught the oneness of God, the oneness of the human family, and the oneness of religion.

Bahá'u'lláh said, “The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens,” and that, as foretold in all the sacred scriptures of the past, now is the time for humanity to live in unity.

Anyone ever hear of this religion, if so what are your thoughts?

If not, here's a link to educate and then discuss:

I think this religion is sorta amazing; it's a long the thoughts that I've always had. That God is one magnificent being, all encompassing, but he's sent disciples down to teach and preach in the facet that that culture would understand. That no one is wrong in their religion, it's the same teachings just spoken in a way the follower would comprehend. Humanity is one kind.

I've heard of it – but don't know much about it. When I see them in parades, they always look really happy.

There's a Bahai' temple on the shore of Lake Michigan near where I live, just north of the Northwestern campus. I've just exhausted my knowledge on the subject.

Funny. so do the Rastas…

Universal religion doesn't work, due to one major flaw in human nature. Deep down, people just feel like they're better than others. It's the ego at work, and individuals completely free from it are rare indeed. One of the hallmarks of religion has always been feeling morally superior to those who don't worship as you do, and that goes away once everyone believes the same thing. Pretty soon you'd have the "Northern Reformed" sect calling the "Eastern Orthodox" sect a bunch of brain-dead Neanderthals, and being called heretics in return. Everyone would invent their own dogma, and call it the "one true religion".

People do have redeeming qualities, but treating everyone as equals just isn't one of them.

This is one of the reasons I've abandoned dogma. Resolutely and entirely.

Sayin'.

People enjoy feeling superior to others. I just don't get that. I don't feel superior. I know I am.

From what I've read about the Bahai religion, it seems almost a borderline cult. It is based on the teachings of a mid- nineteenth century Persian aristocrat and their premise is the belief that only one God exists in the universe, and other religions are merely this God working his will on the world. They believe that eventually, all religions will come together under this deity, and there will be peace. While this is a romantic belief and appeals to the very nature of every human as everyone has a natural instinct to belong, it stifles individualism, as all of their practices are communal in nature. They also believe that every key figure of all religions (Abraham, Jesus, Zoaster, Buddha, ect.) were messengers of this God as was their founder Bahá'u'lláh. In their writings, they believe that the world is one country with no boundaries, and their ultimate goal is world peace as has been promised by their God in every major religion throughout history. I do agree with the main mandates of their doctrine however, I do not subscribe to their religion. The following are their mandates:

All humanity is one family.

Women and men are equal.

All prejudice—racial, religious, national, or economic—is destructive and must be overcome.

We must investigate truth for ourselves, without preconceptions.

Science and religion are in harmony.

The family and its unity are very important.

World peace is the crying need of our time.

The only thing I would NOT agree with is the fifth mandate; science and religion are in harmony. This has not been the case throughout history, nor is the case now. I will be doing an upcoming article on this age old feud between the two, and I think you may be surprised by the percussions it has had are can still be felt today. Anyway, I have posted this as for your information only and hope we can discuss further. Enjoy!

Just today I have asked this question. What has religion, dogma, the "good" books offered in equal to science-based technology as to advance discovery? To elevate our species?

Can't leave you off the hook. You don't have the years to be a hippie. Try again.

I was born in '65….so I could have been a child hippie….

I think it sounds good because I like to live in a happy rose-colored world where there is equality, and people take care of one another No matter how detached from reality it really is.
