Another Connecticut legend. You couldn't get through dinner with the grandparents or even your high school history class without hearing this one-

The story goes, that one day in Deep River, CT a man came into town and tried to rob a local bank. The business owner, however, was tipped off on the robbery and contacted local police to be there before it happened. The robber was shot dead by an officer with a good ol' Winchester rifle.

They posted his picture in newspapers everywhere- even in NYC, trying to find an identity on the man(got to see the newspaper images in my local history class in high school). No one came forward, except for an anonymous letter asking that the man's grave be marked XYZ. And so it was, in Fountain Hill Cemetery.

Every year on the anniversary of his death, a woman, dressed in black would come into town on the train and lay flowers by his grave. My grandmother recalled as a child all the kids running out to watch her, keeping their distance. All the adults just stayed indoors, peering out their windows. I always asked my Gramma, "Why didn't anyone approach her?" Her response "We just didn't do those kinds of things in those days. We just let her be and made up our own stories until our mom's would holler at us to knock it off."

So eventually the lady just stopped coming.

It is said now that there is a great darkness around his grave, and many have felt threatened or been overcome with sadness or fear. I've personally been there many times growing up and it definitely is a creepy area. I was going to do an investigation there, but myself and my friends had too terrifying an experience while stopping by the grave one night to go back to that portion of the cemetery to investigate. Call me chicken;o) I'm still not going lol.
