I recently contacted an old work buddy of mine who moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan and it seems they've been having a big problem there with local youths getting bored and going Cow Tipping, which according to my friend is causing some cows to break their legs. Thus they have to be put down before they are matured and causing the local dairy farmers to loose money. Now that isn't the scary part. It seems some of the local dairy farmers have resorted to positioning fake cows in the fields with a couple of sticks of dynamite in them hooked up to a blasting cap and when the fake cow is tipped the blasting cap is set off and the fake cow blows injuring the youths. It seems that several youths have been injured this way. But none of the local dairy farmers have been charged because of an 19th century Agricultural Law that allows Farmer's or Ranchers to protect their livestock with weapons including, rifles, pistols and TNT in order to drive off rustlers. Apparently these cow tippers fall under the definition of rustlers. So cow tippers in Michigan should beware when they go cow tipping... the cow just might blow up!

It would be sad if that is true. There is also a law in all 50 states if I don't miss my guess that it falls under. It would be considered under the booby trap law. Booby traps are prohibited everywhere that I know and since the kids were tipping first and booby trapped later then would also be considered as an enticement which is even worse. Those farmers are facing hard time and murder charges if a kid gets killed. A good lawyer for the kids will ruin those farmers. Here is a short definition...

BOOBY TRAP: a device set up to be triggered to harm or kill anyone entering the trap, such as a shotgun which will go off if a room is entered, or dynamite which will explode if the ignition key on an auto is turned. If a person sets up such a trap to protect his/her property, he/she will be liable for any injury or death even to an unwanted intruder such as a burglar. Setting a booby trap to even protect one's property is a crime.

I don't understand the cow tipping myth. Not saying it's not happening to your friend. I've been around horses and cows my whole life. Cows can't sleep standing up, and they can weigh close to 2,000 pounds. They are very aware of their surroundings and will normally get up when approached. I've seen four large big men try to get a cow down to assist with a breech birth, it didn't happen with out the cow being drugged. A lot of people I know in cow/horse farming believe this is a myth. It's been rumored people try to do it with horses.

In Pa people can protect their large animals any way they see fit on their property. It's trespassing. My neighbor had their guns out the other night cause someone was in with our horses. They were running in the fields all out and could injure themselves. I've seen horses put down because of this, and caused by an intruder. People say people get drunk and go cow tipping, I think it would make all the harder. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

i find this one scary because it forces you to want to poke out your mind's eye with the nearest sharp instrument. it's also true, as it happened in the town where we used to live. we also had a guy who got caught at the dump doing it with a corpse he had found.

it ain't all purty here in the finger lakes....

LOL! Funny and disgusting because stuff like this actually goes on. There was a two time offender just re-arrested for having his way with a horse. The woman set up a camera and caught him in the act. The owner of the horse says that the horse has been severely traumatized by the events.

My question is this: what if the horse came on to him first? /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

(Yes, I know that's terrible, but that's my mind.
Seriously though, if it's pigs, goats, horses, or sheep, what the heck are people like this thinking? I will NEVER understand it!!
