Offlinei am curious what others think of this area, if this was not done for or by ancient arial travelers than what???
I found out about this place from an article in the local newspaper when i was younger became intrigued and began searching for all i could about the place. i have hunted down articles, travel journals, travel agencies, books and paranormal experts as well as archeologist and ufologist all in an attempt to find out more on the most famous peruvian landscape, i need more. i have a facination with this place and i must see it for myself one day if any of you have been there or have a theory about it please tell.
My personal opinion since they are only truely appreciated from the air is that they would be ancient landing strips and were created to honor the "gods" I would be interested in also traveling the surrounding areas for any further supporting evidence of this theory.

The Nazca Lines are really interesting to me too!
This one in particular make me wonder …
OfflineI took an Andean art class when I was working on my Master's and we talked about the lines at length during one class. I have to agree with archaeologists and South American specialists who believe that the lines served a ritualistic purpose, i.e. walking them was a part of a ritual/spiritual belief. Right now, we know so little about ancient Peruvian cultures (and South America in general) that I also think it's too soon to tell. Ancient South American cultures are some of the richest fields to go into right now for archaeology and art history – I now wish I would have minored in it because I would most definitely been able to get a university job somewhere!
OfflineI like the theory proposed by David Johnson and Steve Mabee (Maybe? /blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> ) that the lines mapped out subterrenean waterways. I watched an interesting documentary which did seem to prove this theory. The fact that these are such arid dry areas also supports this thoeory ,as water would have been of crucial importance to the native peoples. Sometimes I think we are too quick to look for the extraordinary and need to think in the context of the people who were responsible for their creation.

Dbunker … I also saw a TV program about the "waterways" as an explanation for the lines and thought it was really interesting.
OfflineLooking at the map, I wonder if there's a story told.
.
That makes a heck of a lot more sense than subterranean waterways. It could be a message to space travelers or people who passed on to what they perceived as "heaven" in their culture. How in the heck would a subterranean waterway follow the exact patter of a bird or another animal that makes zero sense to me. /blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
Offline/blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> Are you serious? The theory does not suggest the subterranean waterways follow the 'exact' pattern of any of the glyphs. The subterranean waterways are not a theory, they are there. What makes no sense to me is why some people would rather believe the fantastic than a perfectly reasonable practical explanation.

I was not disputing the presence of the subterranean waterways. The first part was tongue and cheek because I could not equate the glyphs with any waterways, but that still does not account for the glyphs. Why were they created? Then what is the reasonable practical explanation? /unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
OfflineI wasnt sure if you were being sarcastic or not. Ive been struck down by the worst bout of flu ive ever had today an my brains not working properly.
It was said the glyphs represented deities whom the nazca worshipped(spider, hummingbird etc.)The glyphs in turn equate to a water source, river, spring etc. The guy in the documentary when applying his theory was able to determine the position of the waterways from the glyphs. The nazca woul perform rituals at the glyph sites and lines in order to ensure continued water supply. I know there are plenty of theories out there this just this one seems to be the most realistic to me, I dont think we give our ancient ancestors credit for their capabilities. Just because we dont know how the ancients acheived things it doesnt mean they werent capable of these feats. and im sorry if i may have been abrupt in my post, as i said im feeling rotten and a little grumpy/touchy today.

OfflineI'm not sure of the purpose, but they do look amazingly similar to the structures made by the mound builders here in Ohio.
The theory is that they used the mounds as paths, and when you ran the paths continuously you were put into an alternate state of consciousness. The shape of the path determined the type of vision or consciousness you were trying to achieve.
I know it doesn't fit all the shapes but some may have similar purposes.
OfflineWe could all be missing the simplest explanation of all. Maybe they were bored out of their gourds, and decided to do some really big art. Say tribal group against tribal group. As a competition?
I can think of worse things to do, and well, with a giant field full of rocks and sand, and not having access to cable t.v. of the internet, what else was there to do? /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

Wonder about what? and I'll leave it at that….

Just out of curiosity are these part of the same huge artwork that they're always showing, like the one of the giant man?

OfflineThink I saw something a few years back that showed that the lines (maybe someother ones) that weren't as long as people were claiming. IE landing strips but instead they were only like 20 feet long. Photos showing them or implying they were longer were done just to add to the 'we were visited a long time ago' theory.
