MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian scientists expect humanity to encounter alien civilizations within the next two decades, a top Russian astronomer predicted on Monday.

"The genesis of life is as inevitable as the formation of atoms… Life exists on other planets and we will find it within 20 years," Andrei Finkelstein, director of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Applied Astronomy Institute, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.

Speaking at an international forum dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life, Finkelstein said 10 percent of the known planets circling suns in the galaxy resemble Earth.

If water can be found there, then so can life, he said, adding that aliens would most likely resemble humans with two arms, two legs and a head.

"They may have different color skin, but even we have that," he said.

Finkelstein's institute runs a program launched in the 1960s at the height of the Cold War space race to watch for and beam out radio signals to outer space.

"The whole time we have been searching for extraterrestrial civilizations, we have mainly been waiting for messages from space and not the other way," he said.

Story Here

My body is ready…

Not to be a 'stick' in the mud – but we've been told this since the 1960's … that we would have contact before 2000 AD.

(But then we were also suppose to have bases on the Moon – Space Stations and Vactions on Mars. Not to mention flying cars and well …)

We were suppose to have contact in 2002 – 2004 – 2005 – 2006 – 2008 – 2010 .. and yet …. Still no "First Contact".

The problem is – this report will go the way of the "Dodo bird" … and 20 years will come and go, just like the past 40+ years came and went. There will be no contact. I wish I was wrong … it would be totally awesome and very cool … don't get me wrong. I've been wanting "First Contact" since I was little boy some 50+ years ago!

@JJB, yea I, unfortunately, can't disupute anything you've said.

But, if they can use this to justify more manned space missions then I'm all for it. I'll even paint banners. And I suppose I gave a misleading title. He doesn't mention anything about aliens, he used the term, 'life'

Hey a lot of people have made some sheckles out in New Mexico with all their UFO and Alien Bed and Breakfasts and restaurants and pit stops and gift shops etc.

I'm considering opening an Alien Tourist Trap here in NY. /cool.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I'm not always right but I'm never wrong.

The above are my opinions.

I can only wish … more consentrated space exploration. I wish the idiots in D.C. understood just how good Space Exploration was and is for the economy. From PhD's to Accountants, truck drivers, blue & white colar … to even janitors.

Not to mention the products that are created for the public market and the jobs that creates!
