Wendywoo, I am sorry to hear about your grandmother. I did check out a few detailed embalming websites to see why tissue paper would be placed on the hands and face. I believe that Norcalmonkey provided the correct answer about protecting the makeup. Also the tissue paper would help to prevent makeup transfer to the casket's inner lining if it touched the face and hands.

they clsoed the casket after the second viewing of the day which was to be the last so it may have been done out of habit

I'm not an expert, but I SUSPECT if there was another open casket event the following day it was done to preserve the makeup job the funerary staff did on your Grandmother's skin. If there was NOT another event then I would say it was done out of habit for the reason I mentioned. Only so much can be done to keep the body "presentable" if you know what I mean and it is NOT easy, soooo. That would be my best guess, I don't believe it's a religious thing.

	I'm sorry for your loss.

I was just curious at why it was done everyone around me was grieving so I didn't want to ask any of them.

I flew home the next day and the few people that I have asked about it had never heard of it.

i am hoping someone can help me i have been lucky enough to not have not attended many funerals in my life but my grandmother passed away two weeks ago (sept.1 2012) and we had her viewing/visitation on sept.5th

i had never been to an open casket viewing before at the end of the visitation the funeral director came in (or at lease i think thats who it was it was someone from the funeral home anyway) and let us know that they would now be closing the casket and that if we didn't want to be there for that now was the time to leave. i chose to stay and i noticed before they closed the caslet he covered my grandmother's hands and face with tissues. i am just wondering why they do that??

anyone have any ideas i tried to google it but didnt really find anything i'm not sure if it is a religios thing (i believe my grandmother was catholic) or what it was i know that she was to be cremated at a later date.

	thank you for any responses /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I would say that any flowing robe would flammible. In colonial times here in America and I would say up to the 19 century a signifcant cause of death for women was catching on fire when their dresses got to close to the fire while cooking. Not sure what the dye in the clothing was made of but may have been a source/cause of flammability. Maybe someone with more knowledge could answer.

Which reminds me of the song...."Knights in White Satin." Now that kind of makes me wonder...if Knights wore white satin they must not of lasted long on the battlefield. Besides what if their enemies wore armor? would the satin wearing knoghts be made fun of? Or maybe their opponants would fall down laughing and the white satin wearing knights would just ride up and kill them. Mmm. Food for thought.

I was watching this Ancient Discoveries show and they were talking about old school weaponry and they had a case where a militant arm of some brotherhood held out for awhile against overwhelming odds in the Holy Land (I guess) but their secret weapon was NOT the holy handgrenade but WAS in fact essentially a flaming wheel they covered in pitch. Apparently the Muslims armys dressed in flowing robes that were highly flammable and well I guess you can imagine how the rest worked out.
