We just moved to another house in another state. The house is newer (2003) so its not like it has a lot of history to it. The problem I am having is that while my son is sleeping, his drawers are opening and the items in the first three drawers are tossed to the floor. It is freaking out my almost 13 year old son. ( it only happened a few times not every night) He plays football and has his cat living in his room. For the last couple of days, there has been a strong..I mean STRONG scent of cotton candy. There should be no way I could not have smelled the "over loaded litter box" (which I made him clean out) or the sweaty football attire. We have looked throughout his room and can't find where the scent is coming from. Last night as the night progressed I brought my husband in, it started to smell like the cotton candy was burning then the scent is completely gone by today.

When we first moved into the house, I noticed that my bedroom door closed on its own. I just chaulked it up to a breeze. (though the windows are closed) But sometimes as I watch it, it is strange how it does closes. Sometimes it almost closes, then as if someone pushes it all the way closed. Like I said in the beginning, it is a newer house. Perhaps there is a logical explanation to all of this.

Hi Lady!

Congrats on the move and your new home.

Sorry to hear this is happening to your son, that has to be very disturbing for him and your family.

Only thing I can think of, can the cat open the drawers? I had various pets do this, my cat would open my hubby's sock drawer at night, and throw the socks around, some would hit the floor.

We have an epidemic of sink bugs in pa. They go under piled clothing, cardboard, and are coming inside this time of year.

Their smell is awful, not like cotton candy to me though.

How about a cleansing? People swear by these when the move, or just feel bad energy.

Hope your son is doing better, this has to be hard for him.

Have you thought about putting a camera up in there to record and see if it catches anything? Does everyone smell the cotton candy or is it you and others smell something else? For now I would start a log or journal and keep tracks of the events. Keep as much detail as possible. You can do a cleansing as well, there is an excellent thread going on about smudging. You can also have a local paranormal group come in and do an investigation. Give them the journal so they can take a look at it as well.

It sounds like it might be a playful spirit or perhaps a poltergeist. If it is a poltergeist it could be your son that is doing it and not fully aware of it. Did anything happen at your old house?

The house doesn't have to be old to be haunted. It could be something attached to the land or something that was brought in like an object that the spirit is attached to.

Hope you find an answer and keep us informed.

I too would blame the cat but throw a camera or 2 on it and you should know for sure

Thank you everyone for your input!!!

I have thought about putting in a camera and a recorder. But I have not ruled out the cat in regard to the clothes being pushed out of the drawers, though it is a rather heavy dresser.

The whole family smelt the cotton candy. The smell is completely gone, and the room has been quiet.

There is an assistance living/alzheimer facility behind us and I wonder if one of the old occupants have wondered over here or was just passing thru.

I have always enjoyed reading posts from people whom were having out of the ordinary experiences. I can honestly say that it isn't enjoyable when it is happening to you.

I agree with you symph, perhaps a cleansing is in order. Even if it is just to make me feel better. /unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I am wondering about poltergeist activity. According to parapsychologist Loyd Auerbach, poltergeist activity is telekinetically caused – often from a human source. If you've recently moved – that could be causing some emotional distress for one of the kids (especially a teen who is probably a raging ball of hormones if they are anything like my teen), which could be manifesting in totally unconscious telekinetic movement of objects. I am especially wondering about this since it seems to take place in the presence of one of your kids, a lot. How are your kids with the move? If this sounds like a possibility to you, I'd be happy to talk to you privately and put you in touch with Loyd. My email is karenfrazier@paranormalunderground.net.

Like others mentioned… My cat enjoys getting on my desk or table or dresser and lazily pushing things off on the floor. Catch her doing it all the time. Doesn't matter what it is… glass, phone, papers, folded clothes.

Congrats on the new house /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Hi LadySciFi!

As many others have said, often activity is tied to the land, not the house. And I agree- a camera would be very helpful. As for addressing the poltergeist phenomenon- I completely agree that this is sometimes caused by a telekinetic expression of teen angst, but sometimes I believe that the high energy that teens can give off also attracts spirit activity.

If you're interested in learning about the process of smudging, I recently did it myself for calming reasons. I didn't follow any ritual, but just let the sage do it's thing. You can read about it in this thread- http://www.paranormalunderground.net…c=1116&st=0

I've never done it for spirit ridding purposes, but I can say for myself the house felt great after it was done. And since it appears that the sage works as a negative ion emitter, which eliminates positive ions(which is supposed to be "bad" energy, don't let the "pos" name fool you) it does make sense. It's supposed to work similar to moving water- like those neg ion producing water fountains, or the ocean. Which might explain why going to the beach is so relaxing and ghost free:)

Has he ever suffered from sleep walking? I'm not trying to make lite of the situation. But sometimes normal explanations are to blame.

I'm not always right but I'm never wrong.

The above are my opinions.

All of the ideas you guys have mentioned could be plausible.

I have left the drawers slightly ajar to see if the cat would take advantage and climb in. If she did, she left everything as it was.

Currently everything is quiet. I like quiet.

If something or someone was here they have either moved on or decided to become quiet. If my cat did take the stuff out of the drawers, she is obviously bored with that game. If the activity is telekinetic, whatever was causing this episode has diminished.

I can't tell you how thankful I am to have you here and give me advice. Thanks again everyone!!!

Not to rain on your parade but it might just be a slow time right now. My sister's house has spells where nothing happens and then after a bit it picks right back up. Usually for her it's winter time when it's the most active. Just keep an eye out and consider keeping a journal to see if there is a pattern.

Tanner used to sleep walk and get night terrors when he was little. It could be pretty disconcerting at times. So glad he grew out of it.

Re: smudging. Don't do it if you are wearing a wool sweater. You'll walk around smelling like you've been smoking pot the rest of the day.

Well that's just peachy. Not what I want to hear. I hope whatever happened isn't going to happen again. Mostly because if it is paranormal, I don't think I know enough to deal with whatever it is.

Absolutely!!

I never knew my son to sleep walk. Though there were 2 times when I woke him up to go potty, one time he ended up peeing in the shower stall, and the other in the litterbox. Looking back at those incidents, I can laugh. But at the time, I was not amused.

I can relate to what you are going through. We built our house in 2002. However, the land was owned by the same family from 1870-something to 1980-something. It seems they had a strong attachment to the land and we were visited by folks we had not invited into the house. Eventually, I learned how to kick them out or to keep them at bay, at the very least. PM me if you want to know more. I wish you luck.

To update:

The door still has a mind of its own. Stops when you tell it to. My son hasn't had anymore eps with his clothes. Though an odd thing happened the other night. We had watched the fourth kind. My kids asked me about my paranormal experiences. I mentioned the time when I was very young, living at home with my parents. I told my family I felt there was strange things happening in our home. My parents and sister told me I was full of it. We all went into our separate rooms right after that discussion. When our doors closed, the fire alarm went off for that split second. I am not surprised. My Mom was into Targot cards and physics

My kids proceeded to tell me about their experiences in our current house. As we were discussing them, the fire alarm started to beep at random. Scared my kids and rattled me pretty well. They ended up sleeping with me in bed, and it stopped when my hubby came home from work (He works nights) We have seen shadows. The thing that concerns me is how my German Shepherd acts when we get home if we have been away for the day. He looks scared to death. His ears are down and his eyes are like saucers. The other day it looked like he had cornered something in the corner, but there was nothing there. Or he will just stare at the wall.

None of us smoke, but we have all smelled cigarette smoke randomly through out the house, and there are times when I go to bed and my pillow smells like cigarette smoke. Yuk!

I do not think it is evil. I have found my recorder, and will take some EVPs in my house while we are gone. Invite whom ever is listening to speak into the recorder.

I will ofcourse tell you if I find something. And even try to get it posted for your opinions. If it is fruitful, I will try to set up the video recorder. Though I am hopeful, this is just over imaginations, and nothing will occur. It is one thing to ghost hunt in another persons place of residence, it is another to live with the spirits.

I admire your courage. I'm way too chicken to try to get EVPs or video footage of whatever/whoever is in my house. It's one thing to live with it but it's a whole different kettle of fish to see a picture of it or hear it's voice. Yeesh.

Be sure and let us know what you find out. It's interesting when it's in someone else's house. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Have you checked for mold? Not saying that is what it is, but one sign of mold is the smell of cigarette smoke.

Also and I speak from a lot of experiences – first hand – second hand and as an investigator …. and friends that are professional home painters – cleaners.

Paint overs do not get rid of smokers in the house before you .. in fact it can last in the home for up to 25+ years …

Usually what needs to happen to get it out of the house is to get a professional cleaner to come and do it. It's not a fun job to do.
