I agree- awesome experiment. My grandfather grew up in North Dakota, born to German immigrants. When it came to digging wells they always used dowsing rods. He said they learned it from the local Indians and it always worked like a charm. And my grandmother's mom used the old needle over the hand to see what the sex of your child was going to be- again, it was never wrong. She also read tea leaves which I think works the same- just floating in liquid.

For me I can't help but wonder HOW. I've seen pendulums and dowsing rods work- but where is the movement coming from? What's the force behind it?

I have seen pendulums work in predicting the sex of a baby many times. It used to be part of baby showers before modern technology took away the surprise factor and it was uncannily accurate. A gold ring (preferably the woman's wedding ring) was put on a gold chain and this pendulum was swung over the pregnant tummy. The direction of the rotation of the circle said boy or girl.

Once the pendulum was right when the professionals were wrong: my SIL had been told she was having a boy but the pendulum said girl. We were just playing around at the hospital waiting for her to finally deliver the baby and we just laughed about the result at the time. We weren't laughing after we found out that the pendulum was right. Since I was the one holding the pendulum and already knew that she was having a boy, I have no explanation for why the pendulum said girl. There are three options I guess: 1) that I somehow knew the baby was really a girl and subconsciously affected the pendulum, 2) it was just lucky or 3) the pendulum reacts differently to a girl baby versus a boy baby.

The last option seems the least likely, but since I have seen it work so many times, I am open minded about all the options. Frankly, I find it just as likely that the pendulum works on its own as I do that I somehow knew that the baby was a girl.

Incidentally, I have also seen dowsing rods work many times in the search for the right place to dig a well. Pendulums and dowsing rods seem very similar to me. I have been told that dowsing rods have had success in finding oil, minerals and missing items but I cannot personally verify that. I do know that while anyone can use a dowsing rod, some people are much more successful at it.

While I don't think it is paranormal, (although it is considered in that category by some, so I think this story that happened today is relevant here), pendulum dowsing can be an incredibly useful tool. Around twenty years ago while still in my late teens I studied a few books on the subject and had a small collection of both Quartz crystal and metal pendulums I used fairly often for various reasons. My active interest in the subject had waned in more recent years though, until today.

Five days ago I lost my wedding band. I had been shoveling snow from my yard and clearing the snow off my vehicle so I could go to the store. When I returned home later that evening I realized my wedding band was no longer on my finger. Obviously I was very upset and have spent many hours over the past days searching the lawns and driveway every time a little more snow melted in the areas I knew I had been. I'd also checked my vehicle interior meticulously, retraced my steps at the store and checked with 'Lost Property' there, checked the store car-park, etc., all to no avail.

I was on the verge of giving up when I had the idea to use a Pendulum to find out whether my subconscious could offer any insight. I'd not used a pendulum in many years, but as I had exhausted my search, I was open to trying anything. I suspected that it had come off during one of the times I had taken my gloves off to blow my nose which had been running due to the exertion in the sub-zero temperatures, when I removed my gloves entering/exiting my vehicle, or when I loaded the vehicle with my shopping. However, I didn't have much of a conscious clue though as to where I could have lost it.

I no longer own a Pendulum, so I tied a small round key-ring to a piece of cotton. I asked a few questions I knew the answer to to check the orientation and see whether I could still get a result, (this test indicated the pendulum would spin clockwise for 'yes' and anti-clockwise for 'no', obviously controlled by minuscule subconscious movements in my fingers and arm while suspending the makeshift pendulum over a table.) Then I asked if I had lost the ring while away from my property. It spun anti-clockwise indicating 'no'. I clarified by asking if the ring was still on my property to which the pendulum spun clockwise indicating 'yes'. I then asked if it was outside - 'yes'. I pondered then how best to narrow the range down, so broke off to get a pen and paper and drew a crude diagram of my front yard, (a mostly longish grass area of about 60 feet by 30 feet other than the concrete driveway), then divided the diagram into a grid containing over 20 squares. Over each square I asked whether the ring was there and waited ten to fifteen seconds or so before moving to another square.

Shortly after around the tenth square the pendulum which had been spinning anti-clockwise continuously over the squares before started to slow, then stopped and started to spin clockwise with increasing momentum.

While not getting my hopes up at all as I had already previously searched the area suggested by the pendulum, I put my shoes on and went outside to check. Within a minute and within a couple of feet of where I guessed the area indicated on my grid related to - half buried in the grass, I found my ring!

I'm absolutely overjoyed and have promised myself I will definitely buy a proper new pendulum very soon! My interest in dowsing is definitely re-ignited!
