Hi all…haven't seen a topic like this posted anywhere around here. If I missed it I apologize.

Simple idea…what is the most afraid you have ever been in your life?

Hopefully the cause was something you couldn't fully explain, or you could explain it and it just made it more frightening. And obviously if there is a paranormal/supernatural cause, that's even better /wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

I'll start. I have been afraid on many occasions, I'll admit. But there were only a few times where I couldn't explain why I was afraid. One instance that sticks out in my mind was a camping trip I took with my wife about 10 years ago in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts.

Our first night there we were awoken by a horrible screeching noise coming from somewhere distant in the woods, getting closer and closer to our tent, accompanied by a really weird galloping noise. It sounded like an owl or some kind of large screeching bird was riding a horse (!) and both were coming straight for our tent.

I remember grabbing onto my wife and yelling "What the #$%#! is that?" My wife, ever the straight-laced scientific type who was raised in a rural town, broke with character and basically answered "I have no idea!" And that made it worse because when it came to animals that I had never seen or heard before, I counted on my wife.

We basically held onto each other as the screeching and galloping literally went right by our tent and then faded into the woods again. For days after that we wondered what it was and asked some rangers and the people camping around us, and no one could really say.

Not the top of my list but definitely in the Top 10 of greatest scares of my life, and still unexplained. My wife, still straight-laced and a non-believer in ghosts, etc., does not like it when I bring it up /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

So, what do you guys got?

Thanks all!

If you had said you were camping in Sleepy Hollow it would make sense. LOL

On a serious note… My expereince with this type sound in the woods was the flapping of a turkey's wings very close to me. I walked up on one and the flapping being so close and loud appeared like galloping to me for a few seconds until I saw the turkey. Really startled me and I knew what it was. I think the same sound without being able to see it would be worse.

^Hmm turkey eh? If it was a turkey, now I'd feel like a total moron.

For the sake of my self esteem I hope it was something more Headless Horseman-esque /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

I'll tell my most frightening paranormal experience. My friend and I had started our own paranormal group a few months back, and we had just gained a couple new members. We decided to check out a place that has been reported to be haunted, about 15 minutes away from our hometown. It's called Okie Pinokie. Our directions were wrong, so we never actually made it there, because it got too late and we had to head back. Anyway.

As we were driving around, lost, we turned down this one road. Everything was normal at first, and then all of a sudden we passed a certain point, and I was overwhelmed by this feeling that I can only describe as black and evil. It was a disgusting feeling. At the first chance, I immediately turned around and got the heck out of there. As we passed approximately the same point it had started, it went away, but I was left with lingering traces of that feeling. I was pretty shaken, and I'm still surprised I was able to drive after that. My forehead and hands were clammy, and my knees and hands were shaking pretty bad. I was still pretty shaken when we got back home, and everytime I think about it, I can remember how it felt. It was the strongest, most unpleasant feeling I've ever had. The two new members did not feel it, but my co-founder did, although not as strongly. She said it felt like her stomach had bottomed out. I am a sensitive, and she is an empath, and we have also had a lot of instances of telepathy, so we believe I initially felt it, and she picked it up from me.

I wonder what caused that feeling, but as curious as I am, I don't want to go back and re-live that feeling again.

^Now that's a good story. Something similar happened to my wife and I on that same camping trip in broad daylight but I'll save the details at the risk of monopolizing the thread.

No reason to feel silly even if it was a turkey or something else but since you didn't look, we shall never know for sure. However, since you heard it, that makes it physical sound. That is just basic science. In order for you to hear it, it had to be a change of air pressure acting on your ear drums. That means what you heard was physically there. So maybe there was good reason to feel fear…

Well I don't know if being young mad it fearful or what but it's stuck in my mind. I was sleeping in the living room with a friend and I was around 7 or 8. We were having a sleep over and wanted to stay up late watching James Bond movies so we didn't go into my room. I woke up and looked over behind the couch and there was this headless man in a suite. Kind of broad almost like an athlete. I just laided there. I looked over at my friend and asked if she had seen. She said she had but acted later as if she was just going along and didn't want to be left out. My aunt told me at the time that in the morning people just see things nothing is there. I later learned that there was things in the house she just had not wanted to scare me. I didn't feel fear or hostility from the man, he disapeared and I was more shocked then anything. I was more calm then I should have been after but the initial site of him was the scary part.

Remember, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

(1) eat less,

(2) don’t ask for money all the time,

(3) are easier to train,

(4) normally come when called,

(5) never ask to drive the car,

(6) don’t smoke or drink,

(7) don’t want to wear your clothes,

(8) don’t have to buy the latest fashions,

(9) don’t need a gazillion dollars for college and

(10) if they get pregnant, you can sell their children ..

I also had a similar experience …

When I was young, and I can't be sure of my exact age, but I'll say when I was about 10, my sister and I were sleeping in the living room of my grandma's house on New Year's eve. The adults were elsewhere in the house. Anyway, what I remember is waking up during the night, sitting up, and seeing headless "spirits" standing in each of the doorways … one doorway to the kitchen, one doorway to the back of the house, and the front door (which was closed).

I couldn't believe my eyes and was so shocked I just laid down and went back to sleep. At the time, the next morning, I was certain it wasn't a dream. My sister remained asleep next to me and I never mentioned it to anyone.

What I also remember is that the headless spirits were in full 1800s dress.

two way tie between the time my son Nick disappeared at an outdoor event when he was about 2

and the time Colin disappeared in Wal-Mart again around the age of 2.

if you mean something that i cant explain it would be the

time i heard someone (something /unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> ) knock on

the 2nd floor window of the room i was in. i was frozen

in fear. when i could finally move and looked out the

window of coures no one or nothing was there.

(it was winter, the window overlooked the porch,

the snow on the roof was untouched)

I don't know that I have ever been genuinely fight or flight scared. Oh maybe once – in the dorms in college. I was in the elevator and a big huge guy took a swing at me for no particular reason. That was pretty scary.

The most afraid I have ever been in my life:

A little background on this one. I live in a house that is around 100 years old. It has hardwood floors all through.

We lived upstairs (16 stairs to be exact). 16 treads of you guessed it hardwood.

My husband, The Big Wolf got up to go downstairs to relieve himself, became entangled in the curtain at top of the stairs and down he went: arse over teakettle, landing head-first onto the hardwood floor.

This was sort of a paranormal event, since he had NORMALLY never went down them headfirst. I heard him hit EVERY step and hit bottom.

Where the fear comes in is that I was terrified something HORRIBLE had happened and he would be seriously injured.

Oh actually you know – I do have one other kind of fear. Snakes. One day the cat came in and dropped one at my feet. Snakes scare the $hit out of me.

I think what I put earlier is my second most scared. The first was also paranormal lol. I was in Jr high I think. Maybe beginning of high school. I was laying in bed with all the covers off since it was hot and my feet were at the very end of the bed. I was asleep and all of a sudden I feel a hand grab my feet fast and with alot of pressure. So, of course, I shoot up in bed look around and no one is there. So even though it was hot I slide my feet under the covers lol. i don't know what it would have done but it made me feel better. My heart was beating like crazy.

When it comes to ghosts and haunted locations, I'm not ever afraid. In fact I've spent the night many times in locations with only one or two other people, and during those nights we've split up so I'm alone most of the time. I'm not afraid of the idea of what ghosts are portrayed as, or noises, or staying in an abandoned hospital or prison, etc.

What I'm more afraid of are things like losing my family to death one day. We're very close-knit and the thought of them not physically being here one day is horrible. I'm also scared to death of the living people, those who do the incredibly crazy things like torturing people to death, most of the gruesome info that is not on the news but I hear about from my cousin who is a cop and a friend who is on the rescue team.

Ghost ain't got nothing on that!!! /ohmy.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

Watching that new movie "The fourth kind" lol, does that count?

Ok, for real,

911, obviously.

The time I saw a red translucent face right next to mine, it had no eyes!!! Scary, but I am over it finally. Took me like over 10 years to get over it though.

A time where I think a ghost was obviously screwing with me- thought he was a real person at the time though, seriously though he was going to kill me.

When I found out my fiance' might have a brain tumor.

And when I though my grandmother was calling my house then realized that she was dead. Not paranormal though, just scared myself.

tho i have often been afraid for those close to me i only have one time where i was truly terrified for myself…

i used to work for a photography company that took pictures for church registries and then we'd have to go back and try to sell the individuals the photo packages; i hated it as i am a rotten salesperson.

anyway, i was travelling by myself all up and down the eastern seaboard, staying in cheap motels etc. it didn't bother me a bit. one nite i was staying in this tiny place between towns, real boonie but close to the ocean. i think it was in delaware. it was about 11 pm and i went down to walk the beach for a bit before bed. i parked my car at the edge of the sand and walked about 5 minutes just enjoying the sound of the gentle waves when all of a sudden, like a kick to the stomach i was overtaken by a feeling of impending dread. that's not really a bad enough word for it. doom is better perhaps. i felt as if i was close to the presence of serious EVIL. i am not one to use that word lightly.

the words 'you must not run' came into my head and i casually turned around and began strolling back to the car. all the while this feeling of evil and doom were growing. i could feel myself beginning to panic and the sentence 'YOU MUST NOT RUN' repeated itself, but this time like in caps as typed.

i finally reached my car, got in (certain i was gonna be grabbed by whatever at any moment), hit the lock button and drove away. as soon as i left the beach and hit the road the feeling washed completely away and left no residual effect. i mean, i wasn't nervous about staying alone at what in reality looked like Bates Motel. i don't think anything could have gotten me back to that beach that night, but i expected to be jittery and wasn't.

i have always wondered about it.

best,

annie

From the ages of 12 to 17, my summers were a nightmare.

My father passed away when I was eleven, my older siblings moved out so it was just my mother and I. It began a year after my father's passing. At random times, late at night during the summers our neighbor would happen to look out her window to see why our dog was barking to see a man trying to break into our house through the basement window. She, instead of calling the police would call our house first to alert us, scaring off the man when he heard the phone ringing. He would run off before anyone could catch him. And of course it was too dark, her eyesight too poor to get a good description to identify him.

It was a mystery to us as to why anyone would be so persistent trying to get into our house while we were home. This happened at random times and for years. I could only imagine it was someone intent on doing us harm. An axe murder maybr. I felt so helpless, we never knew when he would strike, what his intent was. I would have anxiety attacks over this and couldn't sleep at night. But of course, the nights I could fall asleep seems like the nights that he would come. With my father gone, my older brothers out of the house, I felt so alone and vulnerable. It got to the point where I dreaded summers.

Finally, the summer I turned 17. Our German sheppard died. My brother's drunkard (and general substance abuser) loser friend commented "Well, who's going to bark at me now when I'm sleeping it off in your yard?" Apparently this dork would get drunk at the bar down the street and come to our house after closing, thinking my brother still lived their, wanting a place to crash. So he tried to get in our basement rather than knock on the door so he wouldn't disturb my mom. My brother and his friends used to hang out in our basement. So I guess it a was place of comfort to him.

When asked why he ran when the phone rang, he said he thought it was his mother calling looking for him. And this guy was in his 20s.

Well, that was the phantom of my summers. /dry.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Well I suppose this is as good a place as any to submit my first post and thanks to all you good folks for sharing your experiences.

If we're talking terror or fear in general, then my experiences in the military with hostile forces had to be the most terrifying experiences of my life.

Beyond that, The only time I was really afraid of the unknown was a common phobia for kids in my basement. At about 11 or 12 I had recorded an evp in the basement of my house of what sounded like a seriously mad growl, not an animal type sound, more like what you would think an angry demon would sound like. This was no whisper either. Whether or not the actual recording was of a family member or friend messing with me or not is to this day unknown and no one ever admitted to it. Keep in mind this was the late 70's and movies like the Exorcist were huge. What spurred the experiment was a tv show on the paranormal, so I'm sure my mind had been primed for this to begin with. Anyway, ever since I heard the recording, and to be honest, I don't know when the fear actually ceased, I was terrified to be in the basement alone and especially when my back was to it coming up the stairs. I was sure there was something in that basement. Psychological or Paranormal? To this day I have no clue, but it scared the hell out of me as a kid.

I think that incident was the spurring moment for my study of the paranormal, occult and related subjects.

All to frequently, I see shadows, hear voices and bangs, knocks and alike. I live in a 145 year old house within a mile of 3 cemeteries, two of which are civil war era. I treat potential paranormal activity in my home like I treat my wifes cats. If it's annoying I tell it so by admonishing it for bothering me. I honestly have no idea if my house is haunted and don't really care if it is. Odd things happen and I have a vivid imagination. But if it is, the spirits are benign and more than welcome to stay.

A quick comment on the turkey theory. I have to say I agree. I've heard turkeys who were being chased at night and they can sound like hell on horseback if you've never experienced it. I'm not saying it had to be that, but it does fit the description.

And don't feel bad, I was once startled and knocked on my arse by an owl flying extremely low when he buzzed me. For a split second I thought a wraith was coming to take me to hell. /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Welcome to the Underground!

Basements are spooky. I only remember ever being in one basement ever in my life. The houses around where I live don't typically have basements. Anyway, that one time was spooky enough!
