It's really quite amazing how great a person's night vision can be given the proper period of adjustment. The military researching this topic makes me laugh because the night vision devices they issue us tend to leave at least one eye screwed up for hours trying to develop it's own natural dark vision.

I learned about night hikes this past weekend and that the use of flashlights actually decreased your ability to see in the dark. This is so true! I was walking back to the cabin with another lady and our eyes had adjusted nicely after a bit. Then a very "helpful" person came up behind us and felt compelled to light our way. I almost wiped out after she passed us because my eyes could not readjust fast enough. I should have stayed put until my eyes readjusted but I didn't realize how long it took. With that bright flashlight beam I could only see a small area where it was pointed and it was pitch black anywhere outside that little beam of light. Now without a flashlight I could see the whole path and beyond once my eyes adjusted. As far as the military goes, they may know the effects of being deprived of sleep, and how caffeine and tobacco affect night vision but they still send 'em out tired and wired.

While doing some research for how caffeine effects a person's night vision, I found this little gem. It looks like the military did some research about how darkness affects people. It mentions some about our diets and what to take and what to avoid. Seems like advice that could be used in our business.

That's cool. Thanks. It reinforces my belief that I can't trust what my eyes tell me when I stare at something in the dark. I didn't know about the caffeine thing, though.

Great info! I'm glad they included the time frame to adjust to the dark after flash and such considering shows like taps don't use red flashlights to reduce the brightness change. Oh and the smoking part, most don't know Jason Hawes is or was a smoker off scene when I saw him just 2 years ago.

This was awesome- thanks for sharing!

This actually confirms a lot of what I've always figured about ghost hunting at night.

I'm not surprised that diet plays a role. That seems to be pretty much common sense- same reason students should eat well/sleep well ect. before a test. Clearly, certain unnamed TV personalities in the ghost hunting field never got the memo on that one, though. Might explain all those "did you see that?!" moments that the cameras never pick up lol.
