Like most, I'd never heard about the books, but once I knew they existed and thanks to HBO's insistance to make it's subscribers wait eons between seasons for their "original" series technique, I began reading them. I have gone on record, HERE at PUG, of saying that reading the books ahead of the series didn't really effect my enjoyment of the show because the differences between the source material and the actual show were enough to keep you guessing....but here's the rub.

That same attraction has now gone against them. I'm not sure how badly the writers' strike effected this or if they now have different script writers or what the deal is but things have spun horribly out of control. I think in their desire to shake things up, I think they've actually shook things LOOSE. Those interesting plot arcs that were soley created for the show have sort of backfired at an alarming rate and have sort of become a stone around the neck of the script writers..and it's beginning to drag them under. Too many loose ends etc. Here's the part that drives me crazy, they didn't have to go crazy with the original stuff as there are tons of interesting angles RIGHT THERE IN THE BOOKS. There was no need to expand Tara's character. Who gives a crap about Sam's family? The way it was handled in the books was much better. Aside from Jessica, Lafayette and Russell Edgington, most of this HBO stuff has failed miserably. I know they needed Jason for the eye candy, but honestly, in the books, his role is greatly reduced. I could go on for quite a bit on this but I don't want to spoil anything for those not familar with either, but I'll never understand why Hollywood feels a need to tamper with things that DO NOT need adjusting.

Oh well....at least I'm comfortable in the knowledge that Jose was killed in the arm chair he hated the most...according to Lafayette.
