I saw Paranormal Activity a few days ago and liked how slow the occurrences opened up. Hollywood is in such a rush to throw everything at you at once that it was a nice change to see the "paranormal" unfold to it's conclusion. Unfortunately for a brief time you could see the original ending to the movie on you tube...but...Paramount in it's greed and glory pulled it...most likely so they can add it to the DVD special features in the future.

Most of me agrees with your assessment of the movie. There was also the scene when Micah goes to get Katie and take her to a hotel. He tells her that the car is packed and they're ready to walk out the door, however, he's not even wearing shoes.

A dinky thing, but it bugged me.

Sithy, I was wondering about that as well. I think Katie in the movie was getting annoyed about her and Micah not getting married. Just judging from the reaction of Micah saying they were engaged to be engaged. From there it just got worse because Micah was playing more attention to her but with the camera and he became obsessed in capturing evidence of the ghost or demon.

I draw many comparisons between this movie and the Bell Witch Case in Adams, Tennessee. The Bell Witch in essence was the subconsciousness of the young daughter striking out, and eventually killing, her father for sexually abusing her. That is what I took away from the book on the subject written by a supposed witness to the events in Adams, Tennessee on the Bell Farm.

This goes along with my theory that the woman in the movie, Katie, could have been the cause of everything that happened. When she said she saw a shadowy figure standing by her bed when she was young, as well as her sister seeing the shadow figure, the first thing I thought of was sexual abuse of Katie by a male figure in her life, maybe even her father. And much like the Bell Witch Case, in the end the predominant male figure in Katie's life pays the ultimate price, even if he was innocent of what might have happened to her.

They say a lot of women look for their father in their potential mate, and maybe that somehow her anger over what might have happened to her was transferred onto poor Micah. Just a theory on what might have been going on.

Let me add this, I think possession is a two way street. Yes, one can become possessed, but I think ultimately we have the choice in whether we give up that control, and only allow ourselves to become possessed so we don't have to be responsible for our actions. And I think when it comes down to it, part of the exorcism process has to involve the victim admitting that they are letting whatever entity control them, even if they admit it only to themselves. I believe we have control. I believe this because, to me, we have access to the divine as we are a part of God, and have a part of him within us in the form of our souls. Whereas these inhuman entities are only constructs created by God to serve a specific purpose, and thus do not have that spark of the Divine.

I thought the movie was quite well done - especially when you take into account the budget, how few people were in it, etc. I think that the actors really sold the movie - with lousy actors it wouldn't have been very effective.

I didn't think it was scary - but it was somewhat intense. I also thought it was sort of formulaic in a few spots. All-in-all, however, I was pretty impressed with the final product. I can see how a lot of people would find it scary.

I got more of kick out of watching and listening to them. The majority of the crowd thought the movie was true. The audience made this movie better.

As for the movie in it's self. I enjoyed it. There were several scenes where chills went down my spine. I still have fingernail impressions in my left hand from where my wife was holding it. It was a pretty good movie for only having 4 people in the entire thing.

*** More and more spoilers and whatnot...***

I'm confused as to why Micah would resist the idea of the demonologist so much, yet accept the ouija board as a completely reliable means of communication. I guess it could fall under his need to be the alpha male, but I think they could have emphasized it rather than show his interest in his own research methods and denouncing hers. It would have been nice to hear more about her stories from when she first had these encounters.

Why bring up the one similar website without trying to contact somebody related to that case? I guess it's fair to assume that Micah was doing some sort of research since he came home with all sorts of books and whatnot. I would've been curious to hear his conversations with other people about those things -- like the person he borrowed the ouija board from.

If I were in their situation I wouldn't be waiting to hear from a demonologist who is not in the country. I'd be consulting all of my friends for psychics, demonoligists, paranormal groups/ghost hunters, religious folk, etc. Why not gather all of the help that you possibly can to understand it before it's too late? I'd bring more people into the house as well - anyone willing, so that more would experience it first-hand. Whatever it was had already been plenty agitated. I would also be posting video clips on youtube and blogging all of this. It could get shrugged off as any other sensationalized video or story, but I think that's anticipated for the most part.

That said, I still had a fun time watching the movie. We caught a midnight showing last night - and people were in the theater screaming and whatnot. It was great because when the tension got up, the tough guys in the audience were starting side conversations with their friends to seem like they were bored, but I have a feeling some were trying to distract themselves from being scared. When things happened I was startled at first but then I kept anticipating more action. It was great for bringing out those the suspenseful chills rather than the usual hollywood cheesy jumpy scary moments.

The best way I can think of recommending this to friends is that if they liked the blair witch project and it's concepts, then see it. If they hated that movie, I'm sure they would be disappointed here as well.

OK, here's my own spoiler for Paranormal Activity.

	SPOILERS below!!!

I thought the dialogue in the movie was great, the actors were pretty darn good, and I loved the way the movie was made. And, of course, the plotline was right up my alley. LOL

However ... I had read a number of reviews before seeing the movie, all of which said it was one of the scariest movies in a long time, people walked out of the theater it was so scary, etc. So, needless to say, I went in with some HUGE expectations to be scared ****less (sorry for the crudeness).

Well, after leaving the theater, I have to say, I was immensely disappointed based on my expectations to be thoroughly scared. I wasn't even slightly scared at any point in the movie. Not even a tiny bit. Not even accidentally. I actually wish I hadn't read any of the reviews going into the movie because I kept waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting for the scare factor, which never came.

There were definitely some creepy moments in the movie, and once I got home after the movie, the creepy parts of the movie hung with me, and I found myself thinking about those creepy parts quite a bit. So psychologically, the movie struck a chord.

But the biggest surprise for me with this movie was the humor splattered throughout -- mostly provided by the adorable, yet unwise, "boyfriend" character. I laughed many times throughout the movie.

While I had wanted the movie to explore a few more facets of the story, overall (despite being disappointed by the lack of scare factor), I found the movie entertaining.

It would have been cool if he had played it the second time the psychic came over. It wouldn't have mattered if it had insulted the psychic since he was pretty much worthless to help fix the situation that he helped create IMO. I have heard of this happening in real life, where a so-called professional will show up ready to help, and then flake out when the situation seems too deep for them.

A few things didn't help with the psychic sitch. Other than referring them to the demonologist, all he did was scare Kate further. Micah, on the other hand, didn't take him seriously and still played with the Ouja board, then he doesn't want Katie to call the demonologist until it's too late.

Then you have the psychic come back, stay for all of two seconds when he sees Katie is clearly distraught and he flees. He didn't offer her any sound advice at all.

Other than telling the audience that they were dealing with a demon and not a ghost, that psychic was worthless.

I liked that they went the demonic route instead of the usual ghost routine. At least it wasn't, hey, help the spirit out and all is well. I agree with you in that it was **** convenient that the psychic says it's a demon and then it instantly starts acting like one. I felt like the demon following Katie could have been explored a little more, we weren't given much to go on except that it had been a problem for her since she was 8. We never get to see what the so called demonologist would have said either, that disappointed me.

The movie had as slow start to it, but the creep factor was there, I'll give it that. I would imagine that the movie would have been much better to see late at night in a packed theater. As it was, I went at noon with about 15 other people in the theater. Atmosphere plays a big part in the movie. Even without it, there were still some make ya jump moments. Particularly Katie being dragged down the hallway by her ankle. That was pretty cool.

Micah and Katie had there own moments, and I would say that the activity in the house spiked when they were arguing over the activity in the house. Micah genuinely seemed like he wanted to help her and she just wanted to make it go away. In the end, he paid dearly for it.

All in all, a good movie that could have been better, but not a total wash, IMO. I have more opinions about it, but I'll hold them back to see if anyone else has them too.

Best line of the move, bar none: Micah says to Katie "You're too cute to be talking."
