Before I get into my experiences, I'd like to give a little background on the house I spent 1 year in on E. Hurley Pond Road. Back when the book was written there was only one Hurley pond road from what I know. Now there is a west and an east hurley pond road. I am not sure where the house was that is in the book but mine was on the East one. Oddly enough these two roads aren't really close to eachother.
In October 08, me and two other guys were looking for a place to live and at the very last minute we found this place. At first glance you could tell it was old. From what I learned this place was built in the early late 1800s, early 1900s. Our Landlord was an old War Vet who had countless stories. The first time I walked into the palce my ver first feeling was "history". Not your textbook history but just the number of lives that lived inside these walls. You could just tell his place had some real character to it. It was kinda run down, nothing super nice about it. But for 3 guys in their mid twenties it was nice. There was a second house on the property and I'll get into the characters that lived there in a moment. There was a HUGE back yard which we eventually added a volleyball court to it and a nice fenced in area for my pup to run around in behind the other house.
Now the couple that lived in the other house were straight out of a book. The man's name was Frenchy. An ex boxer, war vet, iron worker, and a huge fan of budweiser. Insane beer belly. Probably drank atleast 6 a day. His wife was a perfect match for him. Really nice people but they fit the property if you know what I mean. The property was also FULL of junk. If you have ever seen "American Pickers" or "Horders" then you know what I mean. A quick list, Two full 18 wheeler trailers full of junk, 2 boats, 1 shed filled with stuff, a chicken coup (farmers tax break), 1 garage/house filled with junk…ok you get the idea.
Time to talk about some experiences I had. I'll go into the general ones first. This place always made you feel uneasy. Very Isolated from other houses and it was the last house on the street, surrounded by woods. Even with a church right down the street it still had a nasty feeling about it outside at night. Of course this had a lot to do with animals but none the less it never felt right. I guess that was the biggest thing, being outside, alone in the dark was not fun. There was always odd creaks or noises in this house, that seemed a little more then an old house. My dog would also randomly bark and do the little head tilt at my door with no one outside my door. We had some odd things happen with our Dryer as well. Most likely an old dryer but when we first moved in and the dryer was done it would continue to spin…until you manually shut it off. This eventually stopped after about 2 months. 2 Months before we moved out it started over again doing the same thing. Nothing crazy, just adding to the weirdness of the house.
The main thing that happened inside the house was the shaking of the basement door. It would often move back and forth 3-4 times. Sometimes it appeared it was walking by it that caused it but other times it would just do it. Who knows if this was a draft or not but it still was weird and creepy. To be standing next to a door and just watch and hear it shake pretty violently would still send a shiver up your spine. Now I only had two crazy moments when I lived there for that year. I wish I had more but I don't want to exaggerate or make stuff up.
The first was preparing for a halloween party. A couple of people were banging hammers and nailing stuff up. Right when the finished up I moved to the kitchen and I heard 4-5 several loud bangs, just like a hammer. I moved back to the living room and there was no hammering going on. These were NOT bangs like taps, or the heat turning on, or creaks. These were LOUD LOUD thumping hammer sounds right outside the window. My second experience was the best one I have ever had in my life. Around 1AM I had walked down stairs in the pitch black to walk my dog. As I reached the Door I heard about 8-10 running footsteps right behind me and coming at me. Again, these were not creaks. The sounds started at a normal sound and picked up and pace and in how loud it was. The last step was right at my back and I even turned and yelled "HELLO?!" thinking there was certainly someone behind me. Of course when I turned there was no one at all. Never in my life have I been shocked so much as to not find someone. The difference between those footsteps I heard and those someone would have caused if they actually did run up on me was nil. I am usually a skeptical person watching ghost hunting shows but there was no doubt in my mind something ran up on me. Who or what I will never find out. I will eventually cover all my experiences in my life but this has to be #1.
