OfflineAnyone catch John Zaffis' new show?? I've followed him for awhile, being from CT and all. I've been to some of his lectures in the past, and done my research and I'm still on the fence about him. I really like his investigation style- and I always liked that he always seemed to really want to try and help the person- unlike other ghost hunters who investigate and say "well, we found some evidence, here it is, this will be great for our ratings- smell ya later!"
I also like how he uses old school techniques(attaching string to the ceiling to measure air movement). I am a little unnerved, however, that he's just collecting all of this antique stuff that might be haunted. This dude could just rake it in at an auction one day! Unless, he and the owner sign an agreement which is possible…
Anywho, just wondering what other peoples takes are on him and the new show…
OfflineHi Jilla, I liked the show too. He did ask the clients what they wanted to do with the object (gun in a box found under the house and a typewriter). Both clients wanted him to take the objects. Nice way to fill up a museum, IMO! One thing my hubby noticed is that when Zaffis learned there was an unsolved murder, he never brought the gun to the cops to try to solve a murder! That rubbed us the wrong way.

Yeah- that's where I am on it all, too. Like so many of these paranormal shows(or reality shows in general) there are so many inconsistencies. There are definitely aspects I like more than other shows, but I'm still on the fence.
OfflineI like the fact that at least he seems to do something to help the homeowners, too. If I were them I'd be only too happy to have him take the object away. Of course, if the trouble didn't stop I'd want it back. /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
Maybe he did offer the gun to the police but they weren't interested? After all, there's no way to tell if the gun was deliberately buried there or if it washed in from somewhere nearby during a hurricane. Plus, I'm sure all forensic evidence would be long gone. They could tell if it was the right kind of gun, though….
I liked the show though and I'd like to watch it again. I only got to see the first one.
OfflineI haven't yet watched this show, mainly because its another paranormal show on that channel. I'm waiting to hear of some kind of crossover between them and TAPS. Such as one show asking the other for some sort of 'help' and the other riding in to the rescue. Maybe I'll give it a try. When there is nothing else on. /cool.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Wait – this right here is a RED FLAG …
Why does my skeptic nature see a con job? How many people did he has he, talked out of their objects??

Ok, I don't know this guy and I only know he is a nephew of the Warrens and riding their coat tails. What I do know is that I watched the show and could immediately tell what items he wanted before he told the owners.
Too many inconsistencies, and in each instance he states he is not positive that the items he has chosen are causing their problems. He did supposedly find a gun hidden in a box under this one house and took that. It was an obvious staged event for the camera. He was told about a cane that wasn't of interest until he was told it was an old 1800's cane gun. Guess what item he took on that episode. He added a couple shark jaws to make it look good. The problem was apparently with the guys kid and the shark jaws were in the kids room. So what did he take the guys cane gun???
He also took a nice music box from a girl that was her only connection to her dead mother. She parted with it with tears in her eyes.
The thing is that they only parted with these things because he suggested it. No reputable ghost hunter, paranormal investigator or anyone I know would tell someone their stuff was haunted, causing their problems and then take them. All I see here is him furnishing his private museum (in his basement) with other peoples collectibles.
This is a very disappointing show and just blackens another eye for anyone that considers themselves a serious student of the paranormal.
Sorry, but this grinds my gears.
If you haven't seen it then I suggest you do and decide for yourself. JJB-54 is being quite kind by calling it a con job.
OfflineI have to agree. Ethics and premise aside, it is following the same, overplayed Syfy model. It's dead, Jim. You get his tricorder, I'll grab his wallet.
I will skip the fact that they are (as all shows are) woefully ignorant of correct operating procedures with a thermal. The continue to use the k2 meter (described elsewhere on the net as the "happy meal toy of emf meters") and follow the typical "wham-bam-thankyou-ma'am" investigative format. Oh, and the filler. The useless, boring, intelligence-insulting filler material (think Pawn Stars appraisals that furnish no useful info whatsoever). The "tech" dude with the ponytail is of serious annoyance, almost on par with Brian Harnois.
I was hoping for something like American Pickers, but with a haunted antique theme (like the old friday 13th series). What I see though, is another reheat of the same boring stuff.
regards,
Andy
OfflineWow — this is just sad … I pulled up the episode and watched it. This is a scam — pure and simple.
Thee ethics and such of this show is just not there. I have to agree with GB .. NO ethical and an investigator group that has integrity would ever do this – "offer to take it off their hands" ….

OfflineYeah- that's basically my biggest beef with it all- I literally said to my husband while watching it "Wait- did he just steal that lady's stuff?"
And the typewriter! That typewriter could be in a REAL museum! I just want to know who "inherits" this stuff when he passes? Who does it really belong to?
I don't know, I was always under the impression that his "museum" (which by the way he took over after Ed Warren died-he's their nephew) was full of documented haunted items- not just a collection of things that he's like "hey, this looks old, this might be "haunted"- we'll take it!"
Like I said, growing up in CT, I was always under the impression that he actually "helps" people, and I've heard positive stories about him. He always seemed more "with it" than his uncle- and it was as close to any "expertise" on the subject that I had for many years. Ugh, I've just been grasping at straws, hoping that another one doesn't bite the dust- but my gut says that it really is just par for the course in this "business".
OfflineWow, you guys take TV very seriously, don't you? /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
No offense, but it's just a TV show, for entertainment purposes only. It's not a college course on ghost hunting.
There's a reason no one does a truly serious show detailing paranormal research. In a word, it's dull. Not much happens most of the time. I don't think there's a huge audience for that. Most people can sit around their own house and watch nothing paranormal happen. They don't want to watch that on TV.
People want excitement and results on a TV show. They don't care so much about the boring parts.
Just my opinion, of course.

You may be missing the point on this one. It is not the show that bothers the paranormal community but his taking of peoples property without confirmation that these things are even a problem. He even says he can't be sure but he picks the item to be taken.
He may have a nice reputation in CT but even in his own words he says in the opening of the show that people have been contacting him for more than 40 years to do this. He is 54 years old. So according to him people have been calling him since before he was 14? That alone could cause him credibility issues and throws up a red flag for me.
Oh and on the show tonight he said that the stuff goes to his son.
As the kids say these days… Not cool!

Fair enough. I think he's been working with the Warrens since he was a kid, though, so maybe that's what he's talking about.
I'd give him the haunted object too, but I'd go get it back if the haunting didn't stop.

I was born and grew up in NYC, am a little older than he and remember and met the Warrens years ago after Amityville and the Haunted case in Pittston, Pa. I never heard of John until after Ed died.
So, you would give him an object he told you was haunted on his word?
Well, he is entitled to his fan base and to each his own. This is just my feelings on the matter.
OfflineWell, it's on again in about 15 minutes.
I will watch and come back and post my 2 cents about this week. I am not a gluten for punishment. I just feel I need to watch these things for an educated opinion on them. Don't want to just rant because I don't like what he is doing…
See you at 10pm.
I watched and I was furious at the whole scam – Yes it's 'TV Entertainment' I totally understand this, just like "Fact or Faked" is entertainment -- but you'd be surprised how many people watch this thinking these people are 'authentic and real' /blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> – but the problem is two fold:
A. Too many people do not see this as "entertainment" but 'factual' and 'true'.
B. You see him ripping off people of their property by preying on their unfounded fears.
Thus we who are really into this have no small issues .. you'd be surprised (or maybe not) how many people ask, "Are you going to do this like … Ghost Hunters or Fact or Faked and such? /rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
We have some serious challenges to over come because of these shows .. and this show only makes it worse.
So the problem is INTEGRITY – ACCOUNTABILITY – RESPONSIBILITY … But too see him 'talk' people out of their property … I would like to put a 'GPS' device and follow it and see exactly where this/these objects go.
Again

Not to mention that a lot of these things are antiques with some monetary value.

Thus why the GPS tracker .. I would be seriously curious as to where these go .. and just how much extra $$$'s they make off this scam ….

First I have not seen the show…so my comment is a response to this statement /wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Yes, its is just a show. Yes, it is boring to watch a real investigation. But my problem with these shows (especially Ghost Hunters) is that it has become nothing BUT entertainment and they refuse to say it is. They and apparantly this show refuse to say its entertainment. They want to present it as a legitiment look into the world of paranormal research. Its not. Full discloser is I have never done a paranormal investigation but if they are like any other type of investigation it is boring. Just as COPS is heavily edited. But that show doesn't bill itself as a police training show. And it does show actual stuff happening
