Offlinewell, that's the winter solstice so i figure it has
something to do with that, but i wonder if this
is speculation or the exact day the Mayan
calendar ends
What I got form watching the history and science channel, it's just the date the Mayan calendar ends.
The winter solstice on this date, the sun will be in alignment with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in 26,000 years.
Some think some type of energy is suppose to be disrupted that comes to earth,( from the alignment) 12/21/2012 at 11:11 universal time.
Other thoughts are it is some type of cosmic shifting, and a new age, spiritual type of thing for some.
Where one becomes one with the earth. Then the end of the world, theory.
I found the media interest seemed to start after Mel Gibson's movie Apocalpyto came out.
Blame Mel. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

I've read things about the ley lines, crop circles, bigfoot, and aliens theories are linked to this date.
I find the phenomenon interesting.
My name is Ram and my tank is full. This commerical is nuts, and on every 5 minutes.
The tank better be full, it gets like 8 miles to a gallon. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

OfflineCheryl, what is the significance of Dec 21?
why do they think that's the last day?
is that the date the Mayans ended on?
There are so many different theories out there, but what Symp said is basically what I understand people are saying as well.
Basically, the Winter Solstice on December 21, 2012 is also the end of the Mayan Calendar. Some say that the end of the world also involved the Precession of the Equinoxes and the changing Earth's wobble (which lasts almost 26,000 years). Some say the Earth's rotation will be altered causing massive tidal waves, super volcanic eruptions, massive earthquakes, etc., etc. The non-doomsdayers say the end of the Mayan calendar is meant to indicate a rebirth of sorts … an age of enlightenment.
"This day a rare astronomical and Mayan mythical event occurs. In astronomic terms, the Sun conjuncts the intersection of the Milky Way and the plane of the ecliptic. The Milky Way, as most of us know, extends in a general north-south direction in the night sky. The plane of the ecliptic is the track the Sun, Moon, planets and stars appear to travel in the sky, from east to west. It intersects the Milky Way at a 60 degree angle near the constellation Sagittarius."
Here is a site that tries to explain some of this end of the Mayan Calendar stuff. http://www.planetpapp.com/br21…..ember2012/
OfflineLike Sympathy alluded to, if it's the last we'll see of the
"My name is Ram" commercial, then c'mon 2012! /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

Actually I was under the impression that Aztec and Mayan
mathematics did not allow them to extrapolate their calendar
any further than 2012 hence the need for an ending? I bet J.D. could
expand our minds on this one!
