Got home at about 5 this morning from a visit to/investigation of Robert Lang Studios. I'll write it up for a future PUG – but the place is pretty darn cool. Kurt Cobain recorded his last song there. There is a bathroom that was built specially for Dave Matthews. Other notables who have recorded there include Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Paul Rodgers, Heart, Alice in Chains, Presidents of the USA, Death Cab for Cutie, Queensryche, Liz Phair, Kenny G, Linkin Park, Inflatable Soul, Candlebox, Sir Mix-a-Lot and many others.

Bob Lang is an incredible storyteller. The story of the studio and its ghost includes a buried treasure, death under sudden and suspicious circumstances, amazing chains of coincidences and what has become a revered religious artifact for many in the Catholic faith. I recorded the interview with Bob, and hopefully we'll be able to put it up as a video podcast. If not, I also have an audio recording of it. It is quite long, but he tells the story of Dubby – believed to be the studio ghost who has been experienced by studio personnel, Bob and a number of musicians. He also shared with us the story of the stone, which a number of clergy in the faith community believe is an artifact of deep religious significance.

Our friends at NWPIA were kind enough to take me, Jim and the boys along for the investigation. During the investigation, we used a Radio Shack hack ghost box with some rather interesting results. I have them recorded so I'll take a listen to those as I review evidence from the investigation. None of us had used a Radio Shack hack before – so that was cool to experiment.

I took tons of pictures. We'll see if anything comes up from any of it, and I'll get information out as soon as possible. Meanwhile, if you want to take a look at some info about the studio, you can visit its website: http://www.robertlangstudios.c…../home.html. If you click on "the ghost" and "the stone" you'll find the story of both of those things.

Thanks to Bob, studio manager Paul and NWPIA. It was a very cool experience.

In closing, I'll say this. I used the last of the toilet paper in the Dave Matthews bathroom. Hopefully he won't mind…

Now that would be pretty darn cool, huh?

The thing about Kurt Cobain – I remember his death very clearly because it broke on a local radio station. Some delivery guy was at his place to make a delivery and looked in and saw a body on the floor. He called the police and then called a local (now defunct) radio station, KXRX. I was listening in my car on my way to work when the guy called in, and I remember that because we didn't open until 2 that day (it was a chiropractor's office), we listened to KXRX all morning as the story unfolded. I still remember the whole thing quite vividly and viscerally. But maybe that is because one of my co-workers was related to him somehow. Cousin maybe? I can't remember that part now….

For music buffs like Jim and me, this was a seriously cool place to be. Especially since we are from that period of time when the Seattle music scene was so active.

Gold and platinum records line the hallway.

Our exhausted kids.

That is a really compelling story. It's got a bit of everything mixed in!

I posted the ghost box session from the investigation in today's Evidence of the Week blog. Take a listen and then let's discuss these devices in this thread. What do you think of them?
