I've been invited to join WPRS on an investigation. Finally, after months of trying to plan a time when I can drive down there, I get to go with them this weekend!! I'm very excited. They're a great group out of Wichita that I met at one of my booksignings. (I did an interview with them for PUG as well).

I've read alot about investigating, researched theories, but this will be my first time getting some hands on experience. So, any advice from the seasoned pros? Things to try or look out for? I plan to write about my experience to submit for a future PUG issue. We're going to an outdoor Western museum called CowTown. Even if the investigation is a bust, exploring the museum at night will be exciting!

Just remember to tell them about anything you see, feel, hear or smell. If you are doing EVP sessions, set the recorder down somewhere and verbalize any sound you make. If your stomch growls, verbalize it, if you fart, verbalize it. You get the picture. Ask questions all you can. Help out all you can.

Now remember that there will be boring times, actually about 95% of the time it might be boring.

Take notes and do some research if the time allows it. Meaning some groups, want members going in cold so they are not biased whatsoever when investigating.

Lastly, have fun.

Thank you. Those are all great tips, and I'll be sure to keep them in mind. I wouldn't have thought about the stomach growling thing for the EVPs. I imagine that most of it would be sitting around and waiting, and I'm a huge note taker. I already plan on helping haul equipment and whatever else they need. I'm looking forward to learning all I can. Afterwards, I'm going to research the site and see if I can't talk to some of the people who run the museum.

Also be careful of what you wear. Some clothes make an awful noise when you move, again that's not something you want during an EVP session. Also some clothes appear, um, transparent in IR light.

That is great Michelle!

I remember WPRS talking about how active CowTown was. It should be a wonderful investigation.

I'm not an investigator, but I remember Chad talking a lot about not whispering while doing EVP work. LOL

Have a great time, and I look forward to your article.

How fun, Michelle.

Don't wear perfume, don't whisper and pay attention to all sensory input. Don't jump to any conclusions. Just note it as it happens. You can process it later.

You're going to have a great time. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

Um, what colors exactly look transparent in IR? *michelle thinking of wearing 20 layers now*

Not whispering, good point, too. I can really see how that would mess up the EVPs. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

I can only hope it's as great as your Wellington experience! /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I'm glad you mentioned the perfume. I'm an automatic body-sprayer, lol. It will be both inside and outside, so I think it'll be invaluable as far as experience. And besides, I LOVE new experiences and trying new things. I can't tell you how thrilled I am. It's like a paranormal christmas morning, erm, night, lol.

Just a few tips: 1. Caffiene kills night vision.

2. Thick cotton traps IR light so your modesty will stay intact.

3. Have fun ! /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

Thick cotton, got it! And I'd never heard that about caffeine. Thanks!!

/huh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Caffeine kills night vision? I had no clue!

Michelle – the most important thing that I came up with is processing what you experience. I know I said it before but I do think it is that important. For me, critical analysis in the moment limits the moment. Allow yourself to fully experience what you are experiencing and try to keep the critical analysis at bay until afterward. There's plenty of time to analyze, but experience is fleeting so don't cheat yourself out of it.

I'm guessing a few people will disagree with me on that one, but it's what I've found for myself. I'm there first for the experience and second for the critical analysis. Proving something is less important to me than experiencing.

Oh – one more thing. Paranormal activity doesn't always happen on cue. You may not experience a thing, or what you experience may be so subtle that it is difficult to recognize.

Another thing I might add is constantly be aware of your surroundings. We had one investigation where I felt something tug on my pants. It freaked me out until I realized that it simply was a crease in my pants that settled itself as I was standing in the hallway.

Keep an eye so you don't walk into a wall, a table or anything. I don't like to investigate in complete darkness but each group is different.

You all are awesome! Thank you so much for the advice and support! I really am taking notes as I prepare.

Karen, I see what you're saying about experience first, analyze later. It's great advice because I tend to think and analyze right away when something happens. Even if I don't experience anything, I'll be grateful for the learning experience.

Well you can analyze the second the experience is complete. Just don't let the analysis cost you the experience. I've been known to do that from time to time…

Corduroy, flip flops and MC Hammer pants are all things to stay away from with clothing. Ryan's right – it makes all sorts of noises on audio recorders. So does scuffing your feet. I announce every odd noise I make – whether it is a sniffle, a sneeze, a zipper, a throat clear or if I trip. Just makes good sense to do when you go back for analysis.

It will be hard, but I will refrain from the corduroy mc hammer pants. /blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' /> LOL j/k

Good to know I'm not the only instant analyzer, but I will definitely keep your words in my head while I'm there.

Oh I have another one for you. This is one others might not agree with, but for me it is something I do every time. I set my intention. Starting even before I get to the site, I work to mentally project that I am there to communicate and that I am interested in what the spirits there have to tell me. Maybe that's why they follow me home. /blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I don't think I'm ready to have them follow me home and stay the night or anything, lol, but I'll give the other a try. Can't hurt to get my mind in the right place before going in.

I am SO EXCITED!!!! It's tomorrow! I already told my readers I'd twitter live while there (so long as it doesn't distract from the investigation). Anyone else gets bored, they can follow the tweets — http://twitter.com/michellepillow
