I really, really love this thing. I have been fiddling with it the last 2 hours. I was concerned about the audio quality, but I have to say, if you boost the recording levels sufficiently and verify sensitivity is on high, it seems to be just as good as the DS line from olympus, especially using the normalize function. I love the flexibility of recording options as well. Variable bit rate mp3 will be great for conferences, while surround mode 44.1khz wav will be my flavor of choice on investigation. Another thing I like is I don't have to do any conversion, straight mp3/wav file recording. I just didn't care for WMA compression (not that mp3 is better as far as compression goes, but at least I have the option for an uncompressed format).

I really cannot wait to put this thing through it's paces next week at the PSIence fair conference on QM. I am really looking forward to it as I am thoroghly impressed with the sound quality of this recorder. I also love the "normalize" function, even if it does allow for some clipping from time to time. This feature will come in really handy in outdoor situations.

My only gripe so far is the cardioid patterns. I do understand their purpose, but I have found the only setting to accurately capture myself and the area in front of me is with the surround mode (2ch, and 4 ch when storage allows). The attenuation of audio outside of the 90/120 patterns is significant, moreso than I expected. Even with surround on, side attenuation is pretty noticeable. While this feature might be preferable in a music setting, I don't care for it with evp work. Still, this is only a minor annoyance, the audio is so superb. Another annoyance is the 2gb file size limit, even with larger cards. It will take a little while to find the perfect balance between record mode quality and storage usage.
