Errr I must confess that I ditched 'the team' a couple of years ago too. I did say it was 'extreme' investigation'.......

I've just got a smart phone myself in the last couple of weeks and although I've looked at some of the apps I'm not at the stage where I can see myself ever using them beyond messing around with them whist I sit in a traffic jam.

The ghost box things are tempting though. I was in the dismissive camp when they first came out, but I've watched from the sidelines and they have begun to pique my interest.

	Kind Regards

Nothing wrong with that. I agree the setting up and dismantling of equipment is the worse part of the job. It's nice to have a team that can help do all this. In the two years since I started this thread we haven't changed much at all. Although we only have three DARs right now.

If anything I am having fun playing with the cell phone apps that are out there. Some do come in handy in the field.

I don't know, bottom line is horses for courses - the case in hand will determine what equipment, if any, could be useful in my mind.

I use to cart a car load of equipment around with me but I soon realised that most of my time was spent setting up, maintaining and dismantling the equipment, leaving little time for in the field investigation itself.

Then, post investigation, all those hours of film, photographs and audio to go through (I confess that I still have hours of tapes to review from investigations I undertook years ago).

A couple of years ago I had an epithany - extreme investigations!

Now I arm myself with just a pen and a notebook (paper), along with an audio recording device and little else. Yes. I usually have a digital SLR and camcorder to hand as well, but these are for mainly location shots and to record certain things.

I've now started to get the enjoyment in investigation back.

	Kind Regards

Ive known people that have used them for years. never fail. even when they said theres no way the well is there, it was! Ive never needed them. I just tune into my inner voice and im usually right. Not about finding water, ive never tried that but when I have a certain question about certain thengs, I can usualy find out on my own. not kidding.

They definitely work to find water - that's how my grandfather located his well and how his father did it before him. People used to get a "water witch" to find the location for their wells and they always used dowsing rods. I don't know how they work, but they certainly do.

I've never tried dowsing rods, but I'd like to.

So, I had my first experience using dowsing rods while in Gettysburg. I must say, it blew me away. I always thought that the user would be manipulating the rods somehow but for me I can say that I did not (consciously anyway). I used them inside and outside and found that even with the wind blowing, the rods still responded (against the wind, too). I really feel like I had a conversation with someone on the other side. My husband tried them before I did and he couldn't get any response whatsoever, they just didn't move one bit. At the Branalea Farm, he and Wrightghost had some interesting responses out there by the barn and by the three trees. Hopefully, they will share some details so you can hear what all went on. One evening, we went to the Wheatfield (battlefield near Devil's Den) and to Sykes Bridge (a covered bridge where some Confederate deserters were punished). Dr. Obvious was kind enough to provide a debunking of the rods which I give him props for but certain people in our group will never accept his logic due to their own personal experiences (Wrighty, Mike and Mrs. O /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> ). Dr. Obvious certainly explained and demonstrated how to manipulate the dowsing rods, that is true.

My thoughts are that since this low tech, low budget device has been around for centuries and has been proven effective for searching for water sources, perhaps there is something to it. One of my coworkers paid hundreds of dollars to an engineer who was unable to locate water on the property he was wanting to build a house on. He talked with the neighbors and some of the old timers suggested he use the witching method. Now my coworker is an educated man who scoffed at the idea until he ran out of options. Finally, he tried it and it worked! He located water and has commenced building. Just one story I know, but nonetheless, as COL Klink says, "verrrry interrrresting".

Please share your experiences if you have tried them and/ or your opinions on whether or not they are a bunch of hooey.

I used it during an investigation of the "haunted" International Museum of Spriritual Investigation in Gettysburg. Jonathan, who was running the show had his going at the same time. We got different words almost every time but had a couple of words that kept repeating (Mississippi and soldier). We used the dowsing rods for the first time and my husband got absolutely no response whatsoever but when I tried them, I was blown away by them. I think I will start a thread for folks to share their experiences and thoughts on dowsing rods. Oh, yeah, we had my ghost radar running at the same time Jonathan had his ghost box going and we had some interesting words come up thru both. They had meaning for my husband, Mike. I will see if he will post about it since it is a bit personal, it's his call.

We used ghost radar down at the covered bridge with the Dr. and Mrs. Obvious and got some very eery responses with both it and the dowsing rods.

We also had it running when we were down at one of the witness trees and got some words that could have been accurate (blood, resting).

Overall, I think that it is too subjective. It's so easy to remember and "count" the words that apply while dismissing and "discount" those words that don't.

	As alway, just my opinion /wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Granted that the best you would likely accomplish with this is a blob, but for the sake of argument, what would you think the blob caused by? It's not like an emf hit that could be caused by near limitless possibilities. I am in no way saying that we would be able to make the massive leap to blob = ghost, or even blob = paranormal, but I am curious what would set it off.

I like the ultrasonic idea, where I think this this device will fail is the blending of thermal data with it. It is confusing as there isn't enough thermal data to complete the "picture" lol. I would love to see a separate unit that is ultrasonic "radar" only and produces a similar histogram.

Seems like the thermal inclusion is lacking, using the ultrasonics to fill in the blanks of thermal data. My only issue with this is that if it is thermal that you are after, the i3 just released from FLIR is a fully functional imager (with about the lowest resolution that I would ever try). Still it is a lot better than a histogram. 1100 is the current price, and I expect it will not be long at all before they are sub 1k used. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if new imagers break the 1k price barrier this year.

If Chappel would release an ultrasonic only version (at a savings, that price is just nuts) I would have no problem seeing it as a good instrument for paranormal use.

The low resolution is a problem. While I do find the ultrasonic component an interesting idea, until I see a unit with sufficient resolution to show you what you are looking at, this unit's price just disqualifies it in my book. for 1100 right now you can get a FLIR i3. Not the best, but far better than this.
