I remember once we were discussing reverse engineering of the Darklight as featured on GA. Not sure if you have seen this thread or not, but it is the most info I have been able to find on the subject:

http://gac.conforums.com/index…..gi?board=e…;num=1233792125

Honestly, it looks like a row of UV, IR, and visible LED's. Personally I would break up the visible row into half green, half red or cyan (close to argon emission wavelength) LED's. LED's in bulk are relatively cheap on ebay, all you would have to do is find the same lightwand casing, desolder all the LED's, and replace with above mentioned LED's. Just make sure that the LED's you order match somewhat closely with the forward voltage of the originals, and you should be fine just to swap them out, using original circuitry.

As pointed out in the thread, looks an awful lot like Creepy Hollow's full spectrum illuminator.

If you convert one, let us know how it works for you.

Thanks,

Andy

Ok, channeling my inner nerd….I am going to make one, but the visible row of led's will be exclusively cyan (approximate argon lighting wavelength, despite 159 emission lines, but I will concentrate on the 480nm to 510nm visible range) LED's. If nothing else, if it proves to be non productive, we can scratch argon lighting off the list, lol…

I might make two. with the second splitting the visual row between green and red LED's, and keeping the UV and IR row the same. Dunno how to get that one by the wife, but gonna try anyway. Was also thinking of tinkering with led replacement in an array such as this:

Wow – you sound like my husband (TheJybian). Is it possible the two of you were separated at birth?

I'd just use a powersource, with some resistors and LED's on a breadboard before spending much on using a worklight board + chasis. Of course circuit boards are cheap too, but with a breadboard, if you mess up its no big deal. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

I remember when they used the dark light on GA and they did get an interesting result.

It is amazing how resilient LED's are today. I made a ghost beacon with flasher driven off of a 555 timer chip. I way exceeded the output max limit of the chip, adding more and more led's in parallel (bad idea, but was bored). Lesson here? I had two banks of 4 led's, in series, way past maximum voltage and current on both the 555 and the led's in a stable operation for more than 3 hours with no signs of heat or other issues. All I can say is I should have smoked them. I am starting to thing that forward voltage limits are more of a guideline than gospel /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Here is a really cool voltage/led array calculator for all folks who like to homebrew:

OK, so we just got done taping a podcast with Marcus Leader, the creator of the Dark Light, among other cool inventions. I will say that you will want to listen once the podcast is posted, probably this Thursday or Friday.

He blew my mind.

Looking forward to it. I am hoping he elaborated on his communication device using a charged crystal, that looks pretty interesing.

thanks

Andy

He blew my mind, too. Smart guy. Interesting inventions.

I'm working up the wherewithal to edit the podcast now. I may need to be smacked. Don't know why. Just unmotivated.

He did indeed talk a lot about crystals!

I just woke up … yeah, I know it's noon. /wacko.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />
