You can now pick this little guy up for 2k. I am still hesitant though, it only sports an 80x80 fpa microbolometer, and I fear that wider, large area shots are going to suck. The only images I can find on it are in the thermal audit/home inspection variety, closeups that is. There was a video on youtube here:

I think it might be ok, but would definitely wish to demo the unit prior to purchase. Several other factors that make this unit problematic are lack of video out (SD port for storing stills, and usb out which may be usable as a webcam type interface), and aside from popularity thanks to GH, no proof exists that thermography is a useful tool for spirit research. I also dabble in BF hunts, so the unit could prove useful there as well. I just worry about that 80x80 sensor.

I guess the point that I am aimlessly driving at is does anyone know any group or researcher that is using the i5 unit, and if so, could they sweet talk them into posting some pics?

thanks

Andy

I can't think of anyone using one. I still don't see a reason to use them for ghost hunting, other than to debunk air drafts. I believe other equipment would cover this just as well and much cheaper. We already know that Ghost Hunters the show misuses FLIR all the time and it bothers me that other groups rush out to spend some hard earned money for this type of equipment without knowing what it can do and will not do.

Prior to GH premiering, I had the opportunity to use a Raytheon PalmIR at a haunted research site (yep Ryan, that's the one) over the period of three weeks. I can honestly say nothing anomalous presented itself, but not for lack of looking. Knowing my time with the unit was limited, I had it begging for mercy. Charge, use…repeat.

Since I also dabble in BF hunting, at least there would be another use. I also could use it on manhunts and search/rescue at work, so I can justify the cost, but I have never used an imager with that low of resolution. Has me worried, but if they keep dropping that price, it will be an irrelevant argument.

I don't know to be honest. The time I spent with one was when I was a firefighter and I can't remember the brand of it. I can see what you have uses for like BF hunting and other stuff but I just can't see it as a viable ghost hunting tool.

We got to use some B/W thermalcams in shipboard firefighting, but they were pretty low sensitivity. I still want the FLIR B660, but I'm still $40 grand short of the $40 grand asking price. /dry.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

I fart, therefore I art.

I would love to see if it could aid in establishing whether sensed or measured temp drops are the result of heat loss pulled directly from the percipient, or is it an environmental issue.
