Which is why replication of a given phenomena is needed to test a hypothesis.

I see this issue from both sides.

Having had two personal experiences, to me a personal experience is very important.

It's what has convinced me that ghosts exist. I would assume that a large percent of

people who believe in the paranormal do so because of a personal experience.

That being said, as an educator, working with kids learning to use the Scientific

Method I can also agree that personal experiences are scientifically proof of

nothing.

So while I think for each individual the personal experience means a lot,

and is proof enough of the paranormal, for society as a whole, speaking

scientifically a personal experience means nothing.

It would seem to me that it would be impossible to set up a controlled experiment

to determine if ghosts exist. So a natural experiment would be needed instead.

If we're talking about a residual haunting then the personal experience that

someone had should be able to be observed again in a scientific way.

An intelligent haunt would be a lot harder to experiment with.

This is a tricky topic that I personally keep wavering back and forth on.

It's late and I feel like I'm babbling here /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

Perhaps in the light of day I can be more coherent haha

At this point one has to grab a lab-coat, pause, take a breath and proceed.

How would one choose to investigate a residual haunt? With what protocol, methodology and proper controls? What replication of experimental success would suggest further experimentation?

actually residual haunts should be the easiest to deal with.

they are the same event over and over in the same location.

since these haunts are witnessed by humans with their eyes and ears

all that would be needed is a camera and recorder. aim them at the

location of the haunt and just let them run until they capture something

or we all grow old, wither and die /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' /> you would also need to

have a person with the equipment at all times to prevent any

tom foolery haha.

i don't know how you could replicate one, if they are legit.

please forgive me tonight, it's late and i'm a tad loopy

since i had a headache and all we had was Tylenol PM /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

…which makes one wonder why they can't/don't set up detection devices in the suspect area, and just wait for the residual to repeat? A webcam, with millions of potential viewers – which has been tried without verifiable results (to best of my knowledge) – should catch a residual. The "Ghost" shows are all hit and run. They visit, catch a few "strange" things, then leave. Why not really work a site? Work it to death – no pun intended. I think I know the answer…

You know what bugs me? Have you seen the original "Ghost Adventures" with the flying brick? The scientist they interview testifies that there is no way for a string, thin enough to remain invisible on camera, to move a brick in that way. Sure, if you assume it was a real brick and not a Styrofoam brick stage prop. Really! Can we get some legitimate verification?

Maybe not…

Exactly! an intelligent haunt could be tricky to catch, but a residual should be so easy that there should already be TONS AND TONS of evidence out there. It repeats itself over and over, what is so hard about capturing that???

The tricky part of course would be that you would need actual people on site at all times to prevent any tricks.

Also I think it would be wise to have enough cameras to cover all angles, that way there will be evidence

verifying no one came up and did anything.

The fact no one has done this, at least to my knowledge, says a lot to me.

As for GA, i'm not a fan at all. Zak drives me insane and he's become so

ridiculous this season i can't stand it. his "possession" and his reaction

to a "breeze on his neck" had me in stitches. at least GA is good for a laugh.

We have an "event" that repeats itself at the hotel. It only has happened twice in the 3-1/2 years I have worked there. The pool area and the hotel "disappears" and Union soldiers are seen dragging an artillery piece across the property. I actually worked one of the nights it was seen by a freaked out guest.

Phantom cannon fire is more frequent and would be easier to record. Also, in the last six months, every single day, several times a day, something hits the front of the office building hard. It doesn't appear to be anything large – sounds more like a baseball. It does make a loud sound, however. I even heard it "bounce" and roll on the porch once. Now, I just have to have some equipment to set up out there for one 24-hour period and we'd get it.

The front of the building faces the direction where artillery hit the area where the hotel is located. We had four artillery pieces where a wing of the hotel sat during Day One of the Battle of Gettysburg, on July 1, 1863 (Stewart's U.S. Regulars, Battery /cool.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />. As a result, there was a heavy barrage concentrated in this area. I'm speculating it is phantom small artillery fire hitting the building.

So, when the gang visits Gettysburg (and, of course, stays at the hotel), hopefully they will document this.

A couple of years ago on a Saturday I was up getting ready for work, it was early about 6am or so. While I was in the shower my wife came screaming into the bathroom. I hurried up and threw some clothes on so I could find out what the commotion was. I found out that the front window in the living room suddenly broke while my wife was asleep. Not knowing what caused it I went with the caution of it being human. Outside I found that the screen was still intact except for a small hole. After further investigation I figured out that the window was broken by a bird going after a spider in it's web.

Up at work we have large windows that make up the front side of the building. We've had plenty of birds including one hawk run into the glass.

Each time this happened it sounded like something big hitting it and falling to the ground and rolling around.

One of these days, Carolyn, one of these days. The gang has discovered that we have wildly divergent schedules and can't even seem to find time to meet in the middle somewhere….

If you are speculating that birds are the cause of what happens at the hotel, I can assure you it is not the case. For one thing, whenever I or any of the others hear this, we are out there like a shot (the front desk is only about 7 feet from the front door). There is never anything there, day or night. Second, I have been standing out in that area having a smoke and heard it happen right in front of me, day and night. I am right there, and yet, I don't see a thing hitting the building, not a dent or anything on the porch or ground area. I have even asked for it to happen while I'm standing there, and it does. Yet, nothing physically appears. I don't even bother mentioning it in the magazine anymore it happens so frequently.

Actually I'm just coming up with ideas. I've never seen the B&B and I've never been up in that area so I'm just speculating. If you are there and can verify that this is not the case then it's one less thing that skeptics can say it is.

I still need to get my sisters together and plan our next road trip.

Ryan, if you ever get the chance to come to Gettysburg, let me know in advance. I'll either try to get you a rate at the hotel and/or take a vacation day to give you a tour and spend time with you and yours on the battlefield at night. (A vacation day for me is two days, since I work 16-hour shifts.) Until then, here is the hotel's site: http://www.thegettysburgaddress.com. Soon, the site will have a separate page added to it entitled "Civil War Spirits." It will feature a couple of pages from "Diary of a Haunted Hotel" and Paranormal Underground's E-Magazine where the diary, which documents what happens at the hotel, is published monthly.

I think everyone will know in advance where our next trip will and when it will be. But thank you and I will let you know. Like I said I just need to get my sisters together. It doesn't help much when one of them lives a good distance away.

Totally not of the topic…..except for it's about birds….

One time a bird hit our french doors so hard it splattered its brains all over the window. I made Jim clean it up. True story.
