OfflineI have yet another question for the board. Have any of you ever encountered someone that you believe to be truly evil? Not just bad or disturbed but really EVIL?
I have not, other than my manta ray thingie, but my mother reminded me of something that happened to a friend of hers and it got me thinking about it.
One evening my mom got a phone call from a friend who was a store manager for a chain of clothing stores. Her store was in a rather rough neighborhood in a big city, so this store manager had dealt with many bad situations and was always able to laugh about them later. This lady was one tough cookie. She once took down a robber with a metal pole and kept him pinned until the police arrived. This was not a woman who got shaken easily, but she was absolutely terrified when she called my mom.
She said that it was a very normal evening in the store until the man came in. My mom's friend said that from the second he walked in, she knew that there was something really wrong with him. Every hair on her body stood up and she felt absolute and total dread. She was literally frozen with fear. When she managed to look away from him, she noticed that everyone in the store, employees and shoppers, were also frozen, just watching this man. He browsed through the store casually but my mom's friend said that she got the clear feeling that he knew the terror he inspired and thoroughly enjoyed the effect he was having.
She said he was a totally normal looking person, handsome in fact, and well-groomed. He was in no way overtly threatening, but he was totally freaky somehow. He never said a word, just browsed.
When he finally left, one of the shoppers said "I think we just saw the Devil" and everyone in the store started talking about how scary he was and how "off" he felt. They were all really affected by it, so much so that it took them a while to calm down. My mom's friend admitted that she was shaking like crazy and sweating.
She shooed the customers out as quickly as she could and locked the door behind them even though closing the store early was a fireable offense. She actually called her husband to come pick her up because she was too afraid of meeting that man in the dark to walk to her car. They made sure the other employees drove off safely before they left.
She called my mom as soon as she got home. She said that she knew that she had come into contact with someone or something that was pure evil.
She lived in constant fear that he would come back but she never saw him again.
So, I'm wondering, have any of you ever had a brush with real evil?
OfflineThat's a tough question for me. I know a few people that I personally consider to be Satan embodied; however, I don't really know their history. My guess in each case, personality disorders come into play that make their behaviors appear to be truly evil. The thing is, I have no idea what their childhoods looked like, and my guess is that they probably weren't pretty. Personality disorders arise from something – usually events early in life. Do I think their acts are evil? Yes. Do I think the person, deep down in their soul of souls is evil? Probably not. I also tend to believe, however, that we all came here as a gift to one another, and even the two people I am thinking of that seem really evil have provided me with all sorts of opportunities for growth. So although when I feel this core of darkness enter my personal sphere I want to flee in terror, I usually wind up actually a better person for having had the encounter in the first place.
Do I believe that evil exists? I definitely do, but I think it arises from all of the frailties of the human condition rather than as a spiritual absolute. If one is evil, it is because something got them there and the person themselves aren't evil, even though their acts may be.
OfflineBut if evil people are formed by their bad childhoods, then why aren't all people who have bad childhoods evil? Most people who have bad childhoods grow up to be normal. Some of the best parents I know, for example, made the decision that they would never repeat what was done to them during their bad childhoods. They made a conscious choice to be good.
I think what makes people evil are the choices they make. Many people may have the urge to do bad things but evil people actually choose to do them. Truly evil people choose to do it again. And again. Maybe the evil actions change a person somehow into something that other people can actively perceive as "EVIL".
IMHO, doing the right thing is a choice. So is doing evil. For example, child molesters may not be able to help being sexually attracted to children, but they can certainly choose between seeking help or actually acting on that attraction. The spouse of a child abuser chooses between allowing the abuse to continue or stopping it, by force if necessary. I think modern society allows evil to hide behind the label of "victim" way too much. No matter what our backgrounds are, we are ultimately responsible for shaping our futures.
OfflineWorking in EMS I have encountered incidents where I thought the person was truly evil judging from their actions that brought me to that location. In hindsight, I believe now that they are just a byproduct of today's society in decline. Now do I believe in a person being truly evil, like someone like Hitler. That answer is yes and I'm glad we don't have too many of them anymore. It seems like they come once a generation.
OfflineI just found a book called "EVIL GENES—Why Rome Fell, Hitler Rose, Enron Failed, and My Sister Stole My Mother’s Boyfriend" by Barbara Oakley.
She's a professor of biomedical engineering who had an "evil" sister. After her sister died, she became very interested in understanding her behavior.
Her research strongly indicates that genetic makeup plays a bigger role than background in the creation of "evil" people. We know that the brain scans of sociopaths and psychopaths are different from those of "normal" people, so it makes sense that there's a genetic component, at least to me.
What's interesting is that she couldn't find any studies specifically related to malignant narcissism, even though that is a common term used by psychiatrists to describe what we would call "evil" people. This led to her doing her own research. I am looking forward to reading the book even though the science will probably stymie me.
She found that "evil" people tend to live in cities rather than small towns. That explains a lot. /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
This still doesn't explain why some people would emit a sense of evil while people who do really evil things seem to be able to pass themselves off as normal.
OfflineThe kind of evil you seem to be describing in your opening post to me sounds like what I would call "evil incarnate". Someone that just exudes it and doesn't have to say or do anything. It's just ingrained in their demeanor. The fact that this individual came in a "nice package" really is interesting and disturbing. I've only ever known one person who I would place in the evil incarnate category. It was a guy in my neighborhood growing up who just scared everyone to death. I'm not sure about his background (he was about 8 years older than me I guess) and many years have passed since I've even thought about this guy but he was one of those people who I think had some mental issues that were compounded by hard drugs & alcohol. You'd need only to look at this guy to plainly see that there was a problem. He wound up in jail after freaking out and attacking several neighbors one night. The police unleashed police dogs on him, the dogs chased him behind an old school a couple blocks away and into a dead end below ground stairwell. He wounded all three of the K-9s (one fatally) before they got the best of him. They said it was a regular blood bath at the scene. He survived and was in jail for a looooooooooooong time, he beat an old man into a coma for essentially $15 and stuffed his body into the fridge. That horrible crime was the one we knew about, who knows what other mayhem he was involved in. It didn't take a genius to see his road would end badly, but I've often wondered what contributed to his vile demeanor. He scared me enough that I didn't ask questions of people I know who knew him, it was almost like mentioning his name would as they say "summon the evil".

OfflineI just don't think anyone is "truly evil." Like Karen said, though, people do evil things. It is a choice. Some who have awful things happen to them decide to do the same thing to others, while the next person who had the same thing happen chooses not to.
Maybe circumstance, weakness, etc., play a part in why, but I do think some people harbor such resentment that the only way to stop it is to do the same thing, not that THAT makes any sense at all.
I've come to think that even the most horrible things in life are learning experiences, especially after talking with Melissa Watts about it who has explained that basically (and Karen can correct me if I'm way oversimplifying here) that every is in "the plan" that we made for ourselves in our life between lives.
I joke around often and say that some people I know are evil, but I don't really believe that. I think there is good in everyone … somewhere.

Evil incarnate – that's exactly what I'm talking about! Thank you for that phrase. It completely captures the kind of encounter that I am wondering about.
Has anyone else ever encountered someone who they sensed was evil incarnate?
OfflineI found this story online. Apparently Keanu Reeves thinks he had an encounter with pure evil.
Reeves' Encounter With The Devil
Hollywood KEANU REEVES' most terrifying real-life motorbike experience occurred when he pulled up alongside a car – and noticed a Satan-like figure in the driver's seat.
The actor – who has confronted the supernatural in a fictional sense in films like DEVIL'S ADVOCATE and CONSTANTINE – recalls with horror the moment he starred into the face of true evil.
He says, "I was on my motorbike when I drew up alongside a car at an intersection. I looked over at this guy and I was like, 'Oh, my f**king God!'
"I was looking at the darkest thing – I was looking at darkness. I felt like I had looked at a wraith, like I'd looked at the devil."

I believe it is because some of us have an ability to cope. You see evil people who had perfectly wonderful childhoods, as well. I think that they are lacking something – be it a brain chemical, attachment to a parent, or something else, that leads to bad behavior. I've seen a lot with what kids go through in truly dysfunctional homes, and I've got to tell you – some of them really don't stand a chance. It is heartbreaking, and if you see it from the beginning, you can understand where it comes from.
I agree that every behavior is a choice. That's why I say it arises from the human condition rather than from a spiritual absolute. And you're right, people can make better choices, and when they have better tools, they often do. Some, sadly, appear to be damaged beyond their ability to self repair. I think also that most people – even non-evil people, have a blind spot about themselves. Most of us aren't very good at looking at our own role in things, and we make the poor choices that we do because we are able to justify them to ourselves. If we couldn't justify our actions, then I don't think we would do some of the horrible, terrible, awful things that we do. There's actually a good book about this called "Mistakes Were Made (but not by me)." It does a great job of explaining just how quirky our brains are when it comes to justifying even the most horrible behaviors.
By the way, one of the "evil" people I'm talking about? I believe she is evil incarnate. And yeah – there may be genetics involved as well. I would say malignant narcissism describes her perfectly. I do think sociopathy and psychopathy may come from some chemical condition. But then, I also think drugs can trigger evil behaviors, as could all of the other things I've previously mentioned.
OfflineWhat I wonder about is why people who have evil thoughts don't just kill themselves before they act on these thoughts. If I thought about raping or killing innocent people, I would just be so horrified that I would want to prevent it from ever becoming a possibility. I know this is me putting myself in their shoes and so I can never truly understand this kind of evil incarnate, malignant narcissism. I just think that if they had even a brief lapse in their twisted thinking then maybe they would be so horrified at their desires to hurt someone that it would be enough to make them end their own life. If I ever thought I was even remotely capable of evil acts I would hope I would just put a freaking bullet in my head to end it right then and there. Take out the evil doer and prevent even the remote possibility. I just can't understand how someone could do horrible things! Then again, I am trying to get inside a mind that may be so biologically/ chemically different than my own that it is not possible to truly get it. I could very easily take the life of someone if my life or the life of someone innocent were in danger but to consciously go out and seek to do hurtful things to people and animals, it is just not something I can understand.
OfflineI think there is no cut and dried answer here but this is what I've come to understand. Years ago I read a book by Special Agent Robert Ressler called "Whoever Fights Monsters". SA Ressler was the person who began what would later become the Behaviorial Science Unit at the FBI who are tasked w/tracking and capturing serial killers. As such he's interviewed most of America's modern era serial killers (or had at the time of his retirement). He found a common thread amongst the ones he spoke to and analyzed. W/the exception of Richard Speck (it's believed that Speck actually botched a burglary, panicked and killed those nurses because they were witnesses to his crimes), they all possessed fairly high IQs, higher then average intelligence, big egos. Most of them had a history of abusing animals before moving on to humans (although some held animals/pets in higher esteem then humans…something not exclusive to serial killers I'm thinking considering how hideous people CAN be at times). A morbid fascination w/death and the power/control they have over others in doling it out intoxicates and further propels these savages. I think cowardice is what keeps them from offing themselves and why should they when they view themselves as smarter then everyone else, some feel they're doing "god's work" and as such are beyond human judgement. It's frightening what the BSU uncovered in their interviews. We can sit here forever and discuss the contributing factors that would push someone over the top in regards to one's background (sexual, physical, mental abuse, mental instability, biological imbalances, drug/alcohol dependency/addiction, religious fanatacism, socio-financial enviornment etc etc), but we'll never truly know why some are able to restrain themselves and others can't. There are no true blanket solutions and it's easy to sit on the sidelines and hypothesize the hows and whys. Who knows what really goes through an individuals mind? Not me.
I think what KK is alluding to is/are demons, dark spirits, fallen angels, devils (whatever you want to call them) that may be ancient in origin but have disguised themselves and become "modernized" so as to be living amongst us and continuing the eternal good vs. evil battle. The world is their battle field and there is no such thing as an "innocent bystanders" in this push for domination/corruption of the human soul. I'm not a religious person necessarily and I do believe that there are forces out there that are beyond our comprehension and experience, but a true ultimate evil….who can say. Can there be a truer evil then having all the food necessary to feed the entire planet WELL and hording it so only a select few can have it? Are there worst things then refusing someone proper education or life opportunities based on the color of their skin, gender, orientation or religious beliefs? Keeping people so downtrodden and ignorant whilest fomenting hatred and distrust to further one's own aspirations? You really don't have to look to the "mystic" to find that….just turn on the evening news….

OfflineI'll throw this answer into the mix with a religious point of view. For those of us who believe in God and His creating everything, then there is no such thing as "pure evil" cause God would not create something that is pure evil. Satan was in fact a fallen angel so he was at one time good.

Ah, but they key is he was AT ONE TIME good. Now he is committed to the downfall of humans, right? In essence, he is pure evil. Some believe that angels can walk among us so isn't it theoretically possible that the Devil or his minions walk the earth as pure evil? Even if it's just as possessed people? Or maybe these are people who for some reason have no soul. Is that possible?
Not saying that it's true, but that it is possible.
I think that I once encountered a person who was pure good, so I guess I can believe that there is someone who is pure evil.
In support of this, I found an encounter very similar to my mom's friend's. I even half wonder if this could be the same man.
"I was suddenly and unexpectedly gripped by an overwhelming feeling of fear. As I felt this "person" move toward the counter and closer to me, I involuntarily closed my eyes and screamed silently in my mind. When I realized what I was doing, I immediately tried my best to pull it together.
This "thing" appeared to be a tall, slim man about 40 or 45 wearing a dark blue worker's uniform. The weird thing was that he seemed to absorb the little bit of light coming from the dim bulb above him near the door. The area where he stood, which had previously emitted a soft glow now seemed almost dark as if the little bulb was about to burn out. Almost trembling, I mustered the courage to turn my head toward him. He looked back at me, smiled and simply said , "How are you this evening?" I somehow managed a "fine thank you" and quickly turned back to the counter utterly terrified.
He asked the waitress behind the counter for a soup to go, paid and left. As strange as it sounds, I knew the moment I laid eyes on him that this was not a man; at least, not a human man.
The waitress behind the counter said to the other, "que asusto!", which means "how scary he was!" To which the seated waitress nodded in agreement. This confirmed for me that I wasn't just imagining what I had felt, but that others had felt it, too."
http://paranormal.about.com/li…..h07_15.htm
It's telling that all three women felt the same "vibe" or evil emanation from this man just as everyone in the store felt the same way about the man in the store that night.
And a story from a chiropractor:
"I met evil once. She was in the form of a patient. She made the hair on my neck stand and I felt physically ill/drained being around her. She is the first and only patient in eleven years who prompted me to ban her from ever setting foot in the practice again. There were other wacky and weak people. There were even unbalanced and in one or two cases, psychotic people. There’s been a stalker. But evil is a whole different kettle of fish and it’s a disgusting, oily, leaves-a-rancid-residue experience to interact with them.
When I met evil, I felt afraid."
Many people who have been in the presence of Iran's president also report that they felt that he was truly evil.
Pure evil may be very rare, but I believe that it exists and that these people may have encountered it "in the flesh", so to speak.
I think evil is like ghosts or angels: no one really believes until they have a personal encounter.

I would say that it is difficult for you to understand because you are coming from your healthy frame of reference. It's hard to know another's mind, because all you ever know is what they tell you. You may be able to guess other stuff, but you can't really know another's mind. If you had an unhealthy history, or if you had chemical imbalances, then maybe those evil thoughts would "feel" normal to you.
OfflinePart of the problem is that we as a society are losing our moral compass. Things that used to be black and white are now gray. Now right and wrong is "relative". Nothing is bad unless thinking makes it so. I'm okay, you're okay. It is absolutely sickening.
Sex with children is an example of this slippage. Once it was considered appalling but now there are groups and internet sites that tell people that it's okay. People actively admit that they are pedophiles and are still allowed to walk around as free people. Look at NAMBLA. Look at the the many pedophile sites on the net. There's one for every preference. Instead of reinforcing that pedophilia is wrong and that the person who has sexual feelings for children needs to get help ASAP, they tell each other that it's "normal" and to not be ashamed – they just need to change society's point of view. They cite the ancient Romans and Greeks as evidence that it was once considered to be acceptable and should be again. It just makes me sick to my stomach and sick at heart.
NAMBLA is an evil organization because they are actively lobbying to make pedophilia legal and acceptable. These people want no limits on the age of the children involved, and argue that parents should be able to consent if the children are too young to talk. These people are working hard and donating lots of money toward achieving their goals and sadly, there are actually politicians and experts who support them. Pure EVIL.
Young people go to those sites to find out if their feelings are bad and they get told that they aren't and are actually given advice on how to pursue children. In my opinion, anyone who encourages another person to not seek help for sexualizing children is EVIL. What's really horrifying is that there are women on these sites. One woman on a site for people who like little girls admits that she had a great childhood. She also admits that she has the strong desire to torture and kill children. She openly admits that she does not know if she will be able to control this desire.
Personally, I don't give a flying flip about why these people are like they are. I don't care about their backgrounds or their experiences. The important thing is that they are dangerous. Jail doesn't deter them. Many of the people on the pedophile sites have served time for it and it just makes them more careful. These people do not respond to treatment. IMHO, they just need to be exterminated like the vermin they are, starting with the members of NAMBLA. You can feel sad for the rabid dog, but it still has to be put down.
I'm sure there are sites for people who want to commit murder, rape, torture, etc. but I don't have the stomach to find out for myself.

I understand what you are saying, and I agree. The behaviors that have become acceptable are appalling. I come from a social services background and I've worked in various volunteer counseling types of positions throughout my adulthood. Time on the crisis line, that type of thing. I've seen the very best and the very worst of people. In many, many cases of evildoing, people don't wake up that morning and think, "woo hoo – today is the day I finally get to do something evil." (some do, but most don't.) But then something happens during the day, and BAM suddenly they've done something they can barely comprehend. Does that make it okay? Hell no. That's the thing. Just because people don't necessarily have the tools to do the "right thing," they still make the choice to do the wrong thing, and ultimately we all have to be responsible for the choices we make, even if a single moment can change everything. I guess for me, I seek to try to understand those people because I need to find a way to cope with some of the acts that people perform, and my emotional mechanism is to seek to understand them. I don't expect others to do it, but for me with my very Pollyanna worldview, I really need sometimes to believe that everyone has something inside of them that is redeemable. That is sometimes a very difficult world view to hold, but for me it is how I choose to do it. It has nothing to do with excusing someone else's behavior and everything to do with my own naive need to hold onto my world view.
I recently watched a documentary called "Deliver us from Evil." It was a horrible thing to watch – about a priest in California who abused hundreds of kids. The Archdiocese knew about it, and when a complaint would arise, they'd merely move him to another parish where he could abuse again. Father O'Grady – can't remember the dude's first name. He was clearly a sick man, but what about the machine that covered it all up? It is almost incomprehensible to me, and I don't know how the people who covered it up (or Father O'Grady, for that matter) could live with that $hit on their conscience. To me, willingly allowing sexual abuse of children, is the ultimate evil.
OfflineI would think that the evil incarnate that everyone is refering to could be an encounter with an evil entity.
However I think that since these entities are called deceivers, what was experienced was entirely different.
I will look in charismatics and reported encounters with them. There are some early accounts of meetings with Rasputin that
evoked the same reactions that were conveyed in the original post. This should be an interesting study.
