I am interested in seeing opinions about the Telephone to the Dead (Frank's Box). Does it work? How? What exactly does it "do?" What are the ethical considerations regarding its use?

Hi and Welcome GhostDivaTonyaK!

I haven't had any experience using Frank's Box myself, but I know we have some members here that have either used Frank's Box, the Radio Shack Box, the SpeakJet Box, and Sithy is testing the Spirit Mike right now.

We did a very short issue on Frank's Box in a recent issue, and the creator of the Spirit Mike wrote an article in the April issue. I'd love to hear more opinions on how this type of equipment works as well.

Thanks, MysticalKnight!, for the warm welcome!

There has been a lot of uproar over the past 18 months or so concerning the use of these devices……Is it merely pareidolia, wishful thinking, and "evidence" gathered to support pre-existing beliefs, or do people on this forum consider the use of these devices to be scientifically sound?

While we're at it, I am also interested in opinions concerning the paranormal puck and Ovilus, whether you have used them or not.

I have a ghost box (Radio Shack hack). I also have a speakjet box. I dunno. I think a lot of the telephone to the dead stuff can be explained away as hearing what you expect to hear and pattern recognition, but I need to do more research, definitely.

I'm inclined to agree with you on that…..I feel the same way about most of what is being claimed as EVP.

I have not, however, actually experimented with the devices myself.

I've used Frank's Box and really, I chalk it up to pareidolia coupled with a desire to hear something. So the mind creates the proper patterns from the random sounds to create the desired effect.

Sorry sweety, but you are mistaken in comparing the Spirit Mike to a Frank's Box. It is in actuality a microphone which is set up to pick up Scaler Waves, specifically an Electrit Microphone, and is wrapped in soundproof foam which drowns out the voices of the investigators and allows the ghostly voices to come in clearer. I've not had the chance to use mine yet, but I have heard EVP's captured using this device, and let me tell you, they are of much better quality.

On Most Haunted, on their last Live in Liverpool. There's a library that the security guards received several phones calls in the middle of the night. Coming from within the library. Saying clear messages. So, MH placed phones in three most active locations. These two youtube's explain the rest.

They have done Frank's Box at Gettysburg Live (another time in the UK).

EE, will later do a write up "Frank's Box".

Ordered one of these babies today. I plan to take the SpeakJet box, the spirit mic, the Radio Shack hack box and a regular digital voice recorder up to Wellington (scene of an avalanche/train disaster that is considered extremely haunted) to see what happens with each. I'll let you know. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

Frankly (I know, I know) I'm unimpressed with these devices. They seem to me to be just radio receiving units and stray radio signals are rather ubiquitous.

Unless I'm mistaken, no one uses them in conjunction with a Faraday Cage, which would perhaps eliminate those signals. I think you hear what you want to hear, pareidolia; human beings have evolved to seek out patterns, as we all know. I've had a curt discussion on another board with a man who claimed to be the inventor of the device, and since I don't really know the man personally, I can't vouch for any of his claims, nor do I choose to here.

The only conflict in ethics that I see is claiming these devices pick up spirits and selling this device as a way to connect with the dearly departed. It's a way to make people think they are speaking with their loved ones that passed on and at the same time pass on some money to con people.

If you use it to contact the dead just to ask questions and expect nothing in return then I think it's fine. I just think of people like the mediums of last century or even John Edwards and my BP goes up.

When someone asks me what's the harm in believing some of this stuff, your's is the example I give. That some smarmy puke can alter the memory of a lost loved one (for profit of course) is heinous.

Agreed.

I buy these things out of curiosity – I want to see what people hear in these things. I'll tell you this. I've only heard two or three things that sound like something – but they also could be random noises. It's so hard to know what's going on.

I need something that collects more data at the time that the recordings happen. I think what is needed is some kind of a scientifically controlled study for EVP gathering. Huh. /blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

Dawkins, you are mistaken. Our engineer, Rob Fitzgerald from Deadscience.com, invented the speakjet box (which Karen/NoWhammies has seen and used). Before he released the box, he did intensive experimentation with it, including a faraday cage. All can be found and heard on his archived podcasts:

Thanks for bringing this up, Regan. I had completely forgotten about that even tho I just wrote about it a month or so ago. Rob does a terrific job with research.
