OfflineWell, I have never started a topic and I didn't see that this one has been formally debated yet so I thought I would give it a go. If it has, I do apologize.
I have personally experienced this feeling of being assailed during the night with a sense of panic and unable to do anything (frozen in fear) accompanied with seeing/ feeling something oppressive and dark holding me down. Has anyone else experienced this and if so please share (if you feel comfortable doing that).
What are everyone's thoughts about this? Do you believe that it is paranormal or could it be explained by brain function during sleep?
OfflineI've never had an episode so I can't comment there but a lot about the brain is still a mystery. What science is saying about it now could end up being disproved in the near future. But for now we have a scientific explanation for it. Now is everyone that is having episodes of it having sleep paralysis or could they actually be having a paranormal experience?
OfflineThis is certainly a controversial topic in the paranormal discussion world lol
As for my two cents about it, I believe that the vast majority of these experiences are sleep paralysis. I experienced it as a teenager on occasion, which seems rather typical.
However, in my own belief, there are times that the onset of such an experienced is influenced by a paranormal entity. Of course I have no tangible proof to back that theory up, but I have my own reasons to believe it. I've experienced both, and they were very different to me. But another person will tell you that the paranormal has nothing to do with it. It's something we all have to make up our own minds about.
OfflineFor me I think it may be a brain function thing more than a paranormal event occurring. The last couple of times that it happened to me, I was under quite a bit of stress and not sleeping well. My hubby had surgery last fall for cancer and when he came home from the hospital, I was staying up through the night to get him his pain meds, empty the catheter etc. When I did finally close my eyes for a rest is when I experienced that horrifying, paralyzing thing.
Another time I watched ghost shows for HOURS and then I couldn't go to sleep. I was going from the couch to the bed and back again just trying to nod off. I had that same kind of experience where I felt like I was awake and something scary was keeping me frozen in fear.
Lastly, my daughter and I went to see that movie, Paranormal Activity in the theater when it first came out (before all the hype). For some reason I slept in our little guest room that night and it happened again. I saw like a black mass at the end of the bed and I was scared to death.

Sleep paralysis can be a pretty frightening thing. Good to see you "debunked" any possible paranormal from your experience. I know my worst sleep paralysis was in college during finals. I "woke up", was completely paralyzed and could vividly see a giant spider crawling around the parameter of the room's ceiling. Only my eyes could move. Spiders are on the list along with the shadow man that people often see during sleep paralysis. No fun- but luckily, nothing paranormal.

OfflineOver the years, I believe I have experienced sleep paralysis upon waking from a sleep. The feelings of not being able to move, intense dread, outright evil sometimes. yuk!
I think this is a function of the brain.
However, I do not believe that sleep paralysis explains all paranormal experiences that happen after waking up, etc.
OfflineI suffer from night terrors, and unfortunately my brain also does not produce enough of the chemical that paralyzes us, so that when we sleep, we don't kill ourselves by moving around. Luckily, light wakes me up, though there was that time I was driving in my sleep, and I was really driving, all in broad daylight. I thought I was a super hero or something. /mellow.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Super villains beware.
OfflineHaving been 'there' SP a few times myself over the years .. I did study this and even talked with my doctor.
First thing -> There is nothing "Paranormal" or "Spiritual" about this. It's actually rather common then not.
Here is a link to WEB MD
I would also suggest a read over on Hypnagogic Dreams .. and Lucid Dreams which are very closely related to SP.
Side Note:
I had a web friend contact me recently about being under "Psychic Attack".
I asked her these questions:
… Did you piss off someone recently on the net or where you live that have self-proclaimed Psychic Attack Powers?
…. ANSWER: NO.
Then the answer is clear … you are not under Psychic Attack. Because in the rare cases that one is actually – verifiably under Psychic Attack .. they know exactly WHO and WHY.
We found out through, what I call "20 Questions" … that her life style had changed a lot, from FOOD – FLUID – EXERCISE and even hormonal .. Post Menopause changes. Plus her hubby was gone for 2 weeks (business) during this time. Now even one of the above would cause 'perception issues' – but put them all together …
She thanked me, because she realized all this made sense …
Now how does this related to Sleep Paralysis? Well the same sort of issues .. STRESS .. Lack of sound sleep .. diet .. games … what you've been reading/studying, ie: UFO's – Abductions – Psychic stuff – Paranormal stuff … can all have a play in sleep paralysis and the related dreams.
When my own attacks happened .. I found:
Yes – I was sleeping straight on my back.
(Do you know what happens when you stand too long with locked knees? You pass out. I know, (red faced) it happened to me!) /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />
I also found that during these times .. there was stress going on with various projects and/or what I ate before going to bed, (bed time snacks are NOT always a good thing!) /wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Hope this helps?
OfflineWe can't invalidate everyone's experiences just because science supposedly has all the answers. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
While I do agree more often than not a logical explanation is the cause, who are we to say that Sleep Paralysis is always to blame.
There is too much out there in the world that is unexplained to say we have all the answers.
OfflineI have only had sleep paralysis once in my life and it was totally not frightening. I woke up in the middle of the night and for just a minute or so I was completely paralyzed (other than my eyes being open). I had heard about sleep paralysis so I just concentrated on moving my right hand until I could actually move it. It was a weird sensation, but not frightening because I knew what was happening.
My mother, on the other hand, had the bad kind of incident. She couldn't open her eyes but felt like there was something horribly dreadful standing near to her and that if she could only open her eyes and turn her head to look at it, everything would be okay. She said that it was horrible and truly terrifying but we are both certain that it was sleep paralysis.
On the other hand, there are people who actually see something like the Old Hag when this happens to them and it actually feels like something is physically holding them down rather than just feeling paralyzed. I'm not so certain that those experiences can be explained away simply by sleep paralysis. I really think there may be more going on with those experiences and it may be paranormal. Maybe something is holding them down. Perhaps something paranormal startles them out of sleep so quickly that it takes a moment or two for their bodies to catch up with their brains and perhaps that something takes advantage of that moment somehow.
I'm just speculating, but I really don't believe in one size fits all answers for anything, even so-called sleep paralysis. There are just so many differences in the experience.
