Today's blog was about predetermism. What do you think? Are some things fated, or is everything the logical outcome of our personal choices?

This is a hard one. I don't think that everything in life is predetermined, but perhaps some things are fated. And maybe, with our choices, our fate changes. I'd like to think we had some control with our choices, but then again, we can't control other people's choices that affect us.

I write books. I take pictures.

The only thing predetermined is our own demise, and of course taxes.

Predetermined nah, I don't think so. For our death to be predetermined

our births would have had to have been a lock as well. As for taxes that's a decision

and a whole other forum. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

My birth was determined when the old man and the old lady got jiggy with it.

Kid, I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other, and I've seen a lot of strange stuff, but I've never seen *anything* to make me believe that there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything. 'Cause no mystical energy field controls *my* destiny. It's all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense.

I don't believe anything is predetermined,

there is no such thing as "fate".

But we also don't have complete control

over our lives either. We have control

over how we react to events/situations around us,

but we have no control over other people

or nature which are causing the events/situations

that we have to react to.

I've had a lot of cr*p happen in my life

that I had no control over. How I reacted

to these events, for better or worse, are

all on me though. No one decided before

I was even born that Heidi will have this

laundry list of awful things happen to her.

I don't believe in fate

I don't believe in karma

and for a lot of things

I don't believe in coincidence.

Maybe things are predetermined to a certain point and after

that random chance kicks in. Would there be any science that

would suggest that as plausible? /blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

but to have predetermination you have to believe

in a "higher power". Someone/something has to be

making the decisions on what will happen to you.

so that opens up the whole "can science and god coexist" argument.

i'm not looking to get into a religious debate,

i just barely got here haha.

i'm no expert on the subject, but i will

do some research on science and

predetermination/fate and get back to you though.

Maybe it is not so much God guiding our lives, as our higher spiritual selves.

Just a thought.

I think the important word you used there was "guiding"

If something is guiding us, what ever it may be, then it is helping us in our journey.

To me that isn't the same as predetermination.

To me predetermination or fate means certain things are going to happen.

No need to be "guided" because if it's "fate" it's going to happen no matter what.

And for me personally I don't believe that. I don't believe things are destined

to happen to me.

Jon, I looked and I wasn't able to find anything

that showed scientific proof of "fate", but i'll admit

i didn't look TOO hard haha

I would hate to think that I am not the result of my choices, and that my choices can't affect my future.

At the same time, total control is an illusion (as HeidiAnn mentioned). The control we have is in how we conduct ourselves and how we choose to deal with the circumstances that arise.

As for the theory that we set things for ourselves to experience before we come – maybe we do. But if we do, I don't think we are forced to follow those paths – the opportunity just arises for us to choose them.

Boy! if that's true I'm pretty pissed with myself /angry.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

Why in the world would I pick all the crap that has happened to me???

I should have been smart enough to pick fame, fortune and eternal happiness /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' /> j/k

I could give you all sorts of trite and pat answers to this. But I won't. Answers to horrible things like "it was God's will" have never sat well with me.

Bottom line is I no more know what goes on outside of the physical world I experience than anyone else. It's sure interesting as heck to think about though.

I always consider such fantastic possibilities about things that I wonder if when I die – if my consciousness carries on, am I going to think, "Seriously? This is all there is to it, and this is how and why it happens? What a RIP!!!" /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' /> (no pun intended)
