Here's a video that does a good job of describing why light rod/ecto worm (or whatever anyone calls them) images show up in photographs:

What do you think? Is this always the case that it is an exposure issue?

I think long exposure is the cause most of the time — there are other causes to "lights that weren't there when we took the picture"…….camera straps or other things hanging close to the lens are also culprits……..

Another reason I see often is a reflective sign or car light off in the distance that the flash lights up and the photographer only notices when reviewing the photos……

I think the video is very well done. I am not happy with the name calling that takes place in the video – but the explanations are terrific.

I always thought "light/flying" rods were fascinating. I have no clue what they are.

I agree, long exposure, light trails. I love to photograph light trails of car headlights (highways) lightning bugs, and fireworks.

Still trying to perfect this art, and really enjoy looking at these types of photos.

The video was good, but I did notice the name calling which takes away from their point, imo.

Some people claim that "Rods", as in this picture, are a unknown creature -- possibly alien in origin……..

They are really common bugs traveling through the picture -- the wings and body are exposed multiple times during the exposure resulting in an "unexplainable creature"…… note this pic has a dark background, needing a long exposure — proven by the very bright foreground……….

They are very common in videos because of the 30 frame/sec. recording rate -- a high speed camera will show them as bugs passing close to the camera…….

I remember watching an entire TV episode devoted to rods. I can't remember what it was called though.

What I thought was interesting is that no one seemed to notice the "rods" at the time they were captured. But … I do suppose there are many bugs out there that wouldn't be noticed and could travel as fast as they say the "rods" were traveling, which I can't remember at this point. LOL

They aren't noticed because they are close to the camera -- the photographer is focused on the subject……

The 'speed' of the rod is what the 'expert' will use to claim that it couldn't be a bug………

Like in the above pic it looks like the 'rod' could be somewhere between the foreground and the background -- say 20 feet — at that distance it would have to be traveling at "xx mph" which is much faster than any known bug…… So says the "expert"…….

Judging by the light — I bet it is less than 2 feet from the camera — making the real speed "moth mph"……

yeah, exposure time. I have so many of these fun little photographs myself. /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

From what I recall from the video, this wasn't from a professional photographer or anyone stating they were a paranormal investigator, so putting them down seems rather sad…
