/blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' /> Would this be a suitable topic? How accurate are the K2 meters? We don't see a measurable quantity on them, only the lights.
That is a good one to start with. Sadly I'm not an electronics expert so I wouldn't know where to start. I do recall reading somewhere that even the manufacturer won't say much about the product. Don't know if it's true or not. I do know that I won't use one on an investigation.
Anyone else know anything about the KII?

I know it is very sensitive to 2-way radios.
I was with my paranormal investigation group at a location. The person leading our team had a KII Meter in one hand and a radio in the other. Every time she would key the radio to call other teams, this was a huge site, the KII Meter would light up.
My group president also activated his cell phone near one on my questioning if it was affected by cell phones, and it lit up then as well. And then there was the time the one we had was low on batteries and it lit up slightly then.
There is also the fact that paranormal investigators don't know how, or even if, EMF are related to paranormal activity. We need to quantify all the variables first before we start making claims that this or that piece of equipment detects ghosts.
One thing that is fact is that high EMF will make one suffer what are classic symptoms of paranormal activity. Now, I'm not saying high EMF is not related to paranormal activity, just that it has not been proven, IMO, to be related to such. Though I feel that eventually a correlation will be made, but that is from my own personal observations, both in the field, and through stories I've heard.
OfflineWhat makes me think twice about the KII meter is the ability to set it off with other electronic devices. I'm not saying that it's not a viable tool because I've never used it myself. But from what I've read and heard from people who have used it, it can be easily influenced by nonparanormal occurences. So how can the person using it completely rule out these natural influences and say it was set off by something paranormal?
OfflineI was recently in on an investigation where they were using one for the first time. They were doing the penny trick for the switch (although you can now buy them with on off switches). It was a fairly active place, and the K-II was pretty much useless anyway.
Here's the problem as I see it. We don't know what we're looking for. Of course, that means you need to try different things including an EMF meter. I like some of the new equipment that combines multiple sensors – like the paranormal puck from Digital Dowsing. Measure a whole bunch of stuff at a time, and see what kinds of correlations there are with activity/personal experience.
The thing about the K-II that I think is attractive to people is that it flashes the yes/no answers. You can do this with all sorts of things on a paranormal investigation. Pendulums. Ouija boards. A glass on a table. I've even seen someone use one of those plasma ball lamps with some interesting results. But results from all of those things are inconclusive at best. Who knows what really makes those things happen. The power of the mind and the power of expectation? Ghosts? Something else?
I am building and testing the Talker Kit from Digital Dowsing right now – making it into something called a SpeakJet box. There are some SpeakJet box clips in our video gallery. The theory behind the SpeakJet box is that it converts EMF to allphones, so spirits may be able to communicate. I'm not entirely sure – I think I've heard answers in them before. A.P.A.R.T. of WA uses them on investigations, and they have some interesting results. I'll try to grab some of their EVPs (with their permission) and toss them in our galleries so you can hear it and decide for yourself.
The other piece of equipment that intrigues me is the Ovilus, also from Digital Dowsing. I'd like to get my hands on one and see what it can do.

You go NoWhammies for building the speakjet. Not too many people these days try that. As for the K2 it does have a very vague range from 1.2 to 20+ milligauss written between the lights. We use it and find its great for what it was intended EMF detection. I think as with all meters this is the purpose wether another use is found for them is something else (example: scissors for cutting paper or stabbing somebody JK!). As for the ovilus and paranormal puck we did a write up on them after speaking with the maker. http://www.parachasers.com The sad thing is that the maker thinks he may not make these devices much longer due to the costs and the antagonizing critics, its becoming a headache for him. He has also been working on set with some movies in the works.

I'm sorry – HUBBY is building speakjet. I'm just making him.
Yeah – Bill Chappel is definitely having some issues. I hope he keeps up – he's quite innovative. I hear he does a lot of work with the Ghost Adventures crew.

As far as paranormal detection goes; the devices being used such as a KII meter are a complete hoax. When these devices are designed what is the criteria being used to confirm the presence of the paranormal? All devices are designed according to specs. What specs are being used? What is the actual measured quantity that the device is to detect? All electronic devices detect noise which must be filtered out. The fact that a light goes on occasionally when a paranormal entity is supposedly in the area is not enough. You must legitimate proof that there is a paranormal presence when the light goes on. Most of these devices operate on the principle of the presence of electromagnetic fields which are allegedly given off by the paranormal. Let me inform you that electromagnetic fields surround us on a daily basis. Does not the earth have a magnetic filed? What about high tension cables that are located near housing developments?

So what you're saying that this is yet another device to beguile the credulous for profit?
OfflineWhatever floats your boat, my friend.

Seriously, how an instrument as touchy as the K2 is could possibly be used as an instrument for paranormal research is beyond me…
