OfflineBelow you will see an email someone received in reference to the Halloween Event they were putting one for the "Make A Wish Foundation". The response ticked me off as a jealous threat to a new group trying to do something everyone else is doing. What do you think of it? Did I get the wrong message?

Subject: oct 30th event
Dear "Spookies" director.
Hi. My name is Elizabeth Boorden. I have been involved in the
paranormal field for about 10 years in the Greater Toronto Area. I
recently found out that you are holding a halloween event a the custom
house on Oct 30th. Please take this as "constructive criticism" because
I only want what is best for your group and other groups that have been
established well before the spookies established themselves.
First of all, the location in which you picked is rather out of your
region, don't you think? Mississauga, Brampton and even the outer GTA
has many facilities in which you could have chosen for your event. They
are more competitive in size and capacity in which you are insinuating
your event to be. There is no way you are going to fit a band into the
customs house. Also, the ghosts there do not exist any longer. My
friends and associates of other more prominent groups in that region
have already let them free and they clear that building every time
there is an event there. Looking for any spirits or ghosts in the
custom house is only a waste of time, really. Secondly, there is
going to be way too much competition for your event. The price range of
which you are charging is much more than the admission to the other
events in the area. Again .. held by more prominent groups of both
paranormal and non paranormal related. I am talking about groups with
much more noriaty than yours. I am sure the spookies are good people,
but honestly, who ARE you? Do you realistically think you will obtain
the audience you are anticipating when Haunted Hamilton has their event
just 24 hours after yours? I personally feel that this is unethical on
your part to hold your event, at your specified date and time when
another group that is your elder is holding theirs the next day. If you
can move your event, you should as soon as possible. Think about it.
I also feel you are wasting any money you are investing in this and
wasting the time of the Rescue Mediums and Terry Boyle because I just
do not think your little event is
going to have much of an
audience being that there are other groups holding their festivities
the same weekend. I feel I would be doing my duty to contact each party
attending and ask them to reconsider showing to your event, but I could
be wrong about all of this and I do wish your team the very best.
This e mail was not intended to hurt your feelings, but as someone
who is your senior when it comes to paranormal, I feel that you should
take my advice. I am also willing to mentor you and your group so that
your region can have a outstanding team in your area and one day be
able to be on the same scale as the other known groups.
Sincerely
Elizabeth Boorden.
P.S I do like your website! Good work, but please get it updated as soon as possible!

OfflineWow. I think, yes there is definitely jealousy involved. And it's just little condescending really. One of my pet peeves especially is when an older group automatically assumes you know nothing just because you are younger or newer to the paranormal field, and then they proceed to "teach" you the knowledge you already have. It's aggravating. If I received an e-mail like this, I would be fuming, as I can imagine you are.
OfflineOne would think that a more established group might be willing to take a newer group under their wings and help them to learn to investigate.
For instance – two guys who were a new group showed up at Wellington on Saturday while we were filming. Both NWPIA and APART were amazing to them as far as sharing information, resources, etc.

Being in a pretty new group myself, yes it's great when older groups will help out and help us learn about the paranormal and how to investigate. But it's aggravating to sit through an hour long talk, well lecture really in my case, about what you already know. I think the older group should definitely find out what the younger group already knows, and then expand upon that. Because going over the same really basic stuff doesn't get you anywhere, unless you still haven't grasped that yet. In my group's case, we met with a more established group in our area, and while it was nice of them and everything, they didn't bother to find out what we already knew, and just went over the really basic stuff, which we'd already learned pretty well. They just assumed since we were younger that we knew absolutely nothing, and THAT is what aggravates me. I may be young, yes, BUT I do take the time to learn things on my own, and I am not completely ignorant.
OfflineGhostBreakers, I think you got the right message from this. This person was extremely threatening and condescending in the same breath. The little offer of "mentoring" at the end would have me spitting nails! And the threat of calling people to ask them not to attend a CHARITY EVENT!
I am with you and everyone else responding to this, in that I believe there should be sharing and support between groups to further the field of paranormal research. The person sending the message should have been offering to recruit folks to attend rather than trying to steer them towards another event.
And what is with the question about being out of their "region"? Most Haunted travelled all the way to California to do an event…(yeah, another one of my MH references /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' /> ) But still, people travel way out of their own areas to investigate. Part of the fun.
I'm sure I have more to rant about, but there was a lot of material in that email to rant about!
EDIT: Oh Yeah! The ghosts are all gone from the house? HUH?
OfflineOk, wow, is that real?
That is despicable and threatening on every level. I have no clue who the writer of that email is, but, OMG, they have a major superiority complex.
I really hope the group doesn't change their plans. No one group, or any group, holds the right to a region, location, etc., no matter what their experience is.
BLECH!
OfflineSpookies, good luck with your event, and hope all goes well. The Make A Wish Foundation does wonderful things for children.
You have a big heart. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />
Is this for real?
"Clear the building" is lacking respect for those who passed on, imo. This goes beyond the lack of respect, for fellow investiagtors.
Complaining about the price of a ticket for a good charity.
All I can think of is Lizzie Borden, sad hunh!
Wow, the world is big enough for all paranormal groups.
Walks out, shaking head.

Yeah – I meant more just answering questions as they have them, giving them tips about how to get into local locations, etc. I didn't mean be a pedantic a$$ – which some definitely can be. My experiences with the local groups that I've worked with is that they are really helpful in a meaningful way. They have been invaluable in teaching me stuff as a daring girl reporter.
As for what the letter said about "building clearing" – I have come across people who swear they've done that. i believe that is between spirits who remain and those who currently inhabit. If a spirit wants to be helped to move on, that is one thing – but just "clearing" – not so much.
OfflineMy, my,my. It must be terribly gratifying to know that you are the 'traffic cop' of the paranormal world if you can 'clear a building' and all the spirits obey. Seriously. I wonder how her head can fit through a door.
Disgusting.
Spookies-I hope your event goes well, AS PLANNED!

OfflineHi, Everyone
First of all I wanted to say thanks for the support. I'm the one who got that horrible e mail and this wasn't the only one who sent it one to me. What urks me is that this is a charity event for sick children, and people have a problem with it. Another thing that annoys me about the whole thing is that this person is treating me like my group just woke up one morning and wanted to hunt ghosts. Granted we are a newER group but some of us have been around quite a while in the field. Speaking for myself, I moved up here to Ontario in 2007 and started establishing the Meadowvale Spookies. I may be the new kid on the block but by no means does that mean I'm new to the field. It's really sad this is happening because other groups want to do joint investigations and events, but who does one trust? This is obviously a fake e mail profile they used, so there is no way to know who actually wrote this and if they're going to try to knife us in the back some other way.
Once again, thank you all for the support.

Carrie, you should be commended for doing this charity event, not harassed. I hope the event goes well, and if you'd like, send me some information about the event, and I'll put it in the news section of the magazine.
