I have run into relatively few who seem to be in this because they are looking for notoriety - but that's just my experience, I'm sure they are out there. As for people thinking they are an authority, that seems to be the base of most attacks. Really, it all just boils down to an opinion and how arrogantly one tries to vocalize it or put down someone else's opinion. At least that's what it comes down to from my perspective.

I think the problem is that because a very few are making serious amounts of money today that they can afford to buy Inns in the mountains that others are trying to get in on this. Fame can ruin people in a heart beat.

Many are not in this for the science but just the notoriety. Oh looky me I am a ghost hunter, Oh looky me I am a medium and I know best. I see this often in my list of quazi friends on FaceBook. There is a medium telling people that she is a professional and has more insight then others but yet has no clue of what she is saying.

Others attack some because they are trying to promote something as an authority on something like a possible book
