We've been attacked since 2005; over and over again. Some have gone to the extent of emailing death threats. It's pathetic. I've had my personal cell number put up on craigslist for an ad that said "I'm hot and horny, need a man right now"… I logged over 80 calls in the period of 20 mins. No joke. I keep records of all harassment.

We've been attacked by other groups, members we've dismissed from our team who's created their own group, and even those affiliated with TAPS.

Who cares! That's what I've come to believe. Sure it pisses me off, sure it scared the hell out of me to get a death threat, but in the end it's jealousy and ineptitude plain and simple.

Here's a sample email I received:

hello ms vacktinz or whatever u cal ur self.

u have been named a threat and or hazard.you have been making claims and

comments about others in the community.this is unacceptable. our group is

doing research on you now to determine the best coarse of action in dealing

with you.you can not win our group has never been defeated when it has been

challenged.we vow ourselves to destroy any who are a danger to the

community.

you will be dealt with appropriately be well aware of it.you will not be

allowed to tarnish the community any longer.if you continue the next message

will be to claim the first stage of retaliation against you.it is advised

that you should consider the reaction to future actions.do not bother to

respond this address is not claimed by any one person nor maintained by any

one.

I'm glad you keep records of harassment, I think it's smart.

"you can not win, our group has never been defeated when challenge". WHAT??? Who in their right mind, being a profesional investigator would say or even think this! They sound like gang mentality. I just don't get these types of people, threats are just going way too far, imo. What's realy the point in it anyway. I think logic would kick in and people would think there are enough locations for everyone to investigate and no one had "the market" on spirits or ghosts.

Yup, Regan you are just such a danger, I've noticed it since you came here. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

The more I hear about threats, it's just really is pathetic.

I'm sorry.

Yikes! I didn't realize being interested in paranormal 'stuff' was all about throwin' down in the back alley! /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Yeah, it's definitely good to keep records of all types of harassment. I don't know what is more sad, really: the idea of Gangsta Paranormal Hoods, or people who find ANYONE in the "community" to be a threat over… what? An idea? A theory? A picture of a blurry smudge? Wow.

For me you hit the nail on the head. What could an investigator really do to someone if their just investigating? How could that merit an attack.

It doesn't. These types of people have mental problems or just want something. It's probably all different stories, but same basic reasons, greed and I'm better than you, or at least they think they are.

Yup, what's the competition, there really isn't one when you think about it. It's ridiculous and foolish.

Sadly, there is a mistaken belief among some out there that paranormal investigation will bring about fame, fortune and/or notoriety. Some people believe that by squashing others, it will elevate them. I tend to believe in quite the opposite. Squashing others only serves to diminish you. Just my opinion, of course.

I could see that. Also, just the time it takes to be mean and evil.

I love the last part of your post there. You hit the nail on the head. As a researcher, I have very limited time and funds to devote to the cause. When I do, I try my best to maximize time-on-site and work only with those of similar mindsets. I just don't have time for conflict.

That is a prime argument I have against these "paranormal unity" movements. People are in this research for many diverse reasons, from actually trying to seek answers to less noble reasons such as self-promotion. As long as the motives are diverse, there will never be paranormal unity. Don't get me wrong, I do believe in the concept, but I am a realist and know that the application is the problem. I have received various emails from groups/individuals who have attacked me or my group in the past. These emails profess to bury the hatchet, putting aside differences in hopes of working toward a common goal of "unity in the community". They would have me forget the character assassinations, stalking, personal attacks and outright lies in order to "move forward" with something that would clearly fail simply due to their involvement.

Simply put, my time is extremely valuable, now more than ever. I simply don't have the time to devote to finding out if these folks have turned over a new leaf, or if they are the same vicious, attention-seeking, character-attacking frauds that they used to be. Fool me once, lol… Problem is that if you shy away from a collective organization based on not wanting to associate with certain individuals, you are ultimately villified and end up looking like the bad party in whole ordeal. Inevitably terms such as elitist and snob get thrown your way, but I can live with it. Being true to yourself and ideals should never take a backseat to popularity, and this field is not any different. Eventually like minds gravitate towards each other. That is consistent regardless of their intent, be it viewed as good or bad.

Have fun and try to answer your own personal questions. This mentality is guaranteed to piss someone off down the road, lol.

An outright full on attack by another group? No.

I’ve actually never really been attacked, but I’ve had some interesting situations. I’ve gotten used to it over the years because in this industry we will always have these same situations repeated. I used to get emails more before than I do now from the extremist religious people telling me that I’m dabbling in black magic and that I am not seeing ghosts, I am seeing works of the devil. Those people get the typical “Thank you for your opinion, and I respect your beliefs just as I would hope you respect mine. Have a nice day.” Then they get blocked.

I was only involved with one group once, Ohio Ghost Hunters Society when I first started investigating after doing a couple years of research on “myself” by myself. Back then, 12-15 years ago, it seemed like you HAD to be part of a group, but I learned quickly I can be just as or even more successful on my own.

My “group” consists of my husband and me, and sometimes another friend or two (also investigators with experience). It certainly helped with quite a few of my investigations by allowing me access to places most groups would not be allowed because of the size of people they work with, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Group members share ideas with each other, try unique methods, conduct different experiments at once to compare the results, etc. I do that as well, but I have relationships with other ghost hunting groups and single investigators around the world that I use as my sounding board, and vice versa.

I chose to be more independent in the industry because of all the inner-turmoil and drama I saw taking place within not only the OGHS but other groups we corresponded with at the time as well. In general, the drama in the paranormal community tends to be very petty and is a result of jealousy, the “know it all” attitude, and “my way is the only way”. I have said many times before that if we all worked together, with the understanding that we CAN disagree, we would probably learn so much more by brainstorming together for ideas, experiments, coming up with good, hard scientific and metaphysical evidence. To me it’s much more important to spend the time on my own researching, traveling, writing, documenting and studying the paranormal rather than waste my time arguing about issues that shouldn’t be an issue in the first place. The people who argue in that sense obviously don’t have a true interest in the paranormal and their priority is not to do their best to learn and educate about the paranormal, but rather to have what they feel is the “best” and last word.

For instance, when I was involved with OGHS when I first started investigating the Mansfield Reformatory, the OGHS group was “the” group who ran the hunts at the time. I was very good friends with the leader of that organization, but the more my abilities became evident and we (my sister, my friends and me) began capturing what we believe to be rare paranormal energy on film, EVPs and video, then the OGHS began “shunning” me. I tried to continue working with them, and then opted to remove my ties with them. I continued investigating the Mansfield Reformatory for the next 10 years, amongst a lot of other allegedly haunted locations throughout the USA, England and Ireland Low and behold, the OGHS group spit into two fronts who started battling it out against each other. The person who led the group opposite of the original leader of the OGHS contacted me, downing the OGHS leader, and asked me to be in a group with them. I declined and was honest with my reasons, and that was because this particular person gave me a lot of problems due to her jealousy when the OGHS was one. I am not going to work with anyone who I know provides any opportunity for drama. She wasn’t pleased with my answer and she tried ripping me a new one, but it didn’t work. All of those people disappeared years ago, and I am still making my name.

When it comes to forums the most I’ve had is when people try to befriend me and take what we discussed PRIVATELY via private messages and then post it on the forums knowing it would irritate me, which, I’m not going to lie, it did – AT FIRST. I asked repeatedly not to discuss it on the forums, and they continued which in turn has caused me to cut all ties with them. The most recent of that taking place over on SyFy a few months ago. I came to realize quickly that those kind of people do so for the sake of feeling as if they are in control, and to feel better about themselves they need to disrespect and purposely degrade others. Then they wonder why people choose not to associate with them and act all offended when people don’t want to waste their time with childish games.

I also had an internet stalker that started 10 years ago. He just happened to find me online one day online and for the next three years my life was hell to the point of filing legal charges against him. This is still considered an open case because the FBI is still having me track anything I believe is from this guy and provide it to the cops to build up more of a record. About 3 years ago he somehow got my cell phone number and then knew where we lived. That was really scary. It’s a feeling you can’t describe when a perfect stranger who acts like he hates you but completely obsesses over you for no reason at all.

So in all this industry has taught me to be stronger, not take as much BS from people, stand my ground against my beliefs but respect the beliefs of others who feel differently. I learned to cut ties with the people who are so miserable, jealous and competitive that they feel the need to make people around them just as miserable so they can feel better. In general, though there have been some stresses here and there, being a part of the paranormal community has been a happy, positive experience. It’s created hundreds of new friendships for me all around the world. I’ve visited places I never dreamed I would be able to see in “real life”. I’ve done well learning as much as possible about the paranormal and continuing in my education while teaching and assisting others. That’s the best part about it, in my opinion!

Sorry, this is long and I’m late, but I wanted to get some good thoughts together before I replied!

Becky, thanks for the input! It is always great to hear how something negative can be used to positively reinforce things.

To be completely honest, the whole situation has actually been a positive thing – not only for myself, but for the group I'm a part of. We recently held our last meeting for the year, and we – as a group – plan on taking a different course for next year, one that focuses more on fun and learning, and frankly not giving a care about what the 'community' thinks about it.

One thing has become quite apparent to me over the last few months, and all of this latest b.s. just solidified my opinion on it: none of it really matters if it isn't personally rewarding first. I think our group started to lose that perspective, at least I know I did. I got into this because of my own desires, not to worry about silly cliques and a bunch of words typed in by some anonymous cyber-jerk! Time to get back to the original reasons…

Anyway, thanks for sharing!

That's so true, Regan. Thanks for posting!!

I do feel sorry for the people who are that desperate for attention. That would be a very sad, miserable life….

I think Karen hit it on the head about people feeling insecure with themselves, have to lash out at others to build themselves up. I never understood the Alpha Dog Syndrome and why some people feel it is their duty to be the "top" person, the one that knows it all and everyone else is just inferior.

Thanks for sharing Regan, I just can't beleive the nerve of some people to send out threats like that. This is a crazy mixed up world we live in. Many times in the past I have had people terminate friendships due to being friends with someone else. What a shame for people to be that shallow….

I'm sorry you've been through that Gene. Sadly there are people in this world who's only goal is drama, drama, drama.

I've learned over the years the best way to deal with people like that is to just ignore them.

I must lead a boring life. I've reached out contact to the other groups in my area and I've only had one response. I don't even get hate emails from anyone.

It's sad when people have to resort to these things. I guess they don't have anything better to do.
