Why is paranormal activity associated with electromagnetic fields?

This goes further than just spirits and also deals with UFOs as well.

I strongly believe that when the paranormal is proven without a shadow of a doubt, EMF will not be involved in any way.

This is a great question and I think it's a point worth exploring.

It's been proven that EMFs have a huge impact on us physically. I'm not convinced at all that the paranormal is caused by EMFs, but I do wonder if EMFs can make us more susceptible to the paranormal. Perhaps it weakens our natural shields against seeing or hearing things by changing our brain waves somehow? I sincerely believe that some people are naturally able to perceive the paranormal and that it is a simple matter of how our brains are wired. I think of us all as radios – some of us just receive a wider band of signals than others. Maybe high EMFs change people's receiving ability? Just throwing it out.

IMHO, ghosts/spirits are definitely some kind of energy. When they are around, you can feel them. The hair on your body sometimes stands up and you have a strong feeling that something is nearby, watching you. Sometimes you even have the sensation of being touched. Sometimes the sensation is very clearly a hand, like when my hair was stroked and sometimes it's more subtle, like gossamer fabric or a spiders web brushing against you. Is that EMF? I don't think so.

Spirits definitely produce a change in the atmosphere of a room. Is it EMF? I don't know.

In my experience, the paranormal sometimes involves lights dimming, going on and off, appliances, computers and tvs acting funny, etc. I don't think that has to do with any EMFs from the spirits, tho. I just think it's one of the things they can control to let us know that they are around. As for apparitions, voices and all of the knockings, rappings and other noises they can produce? Not sure that's linked to EMFs at all.

I am certainly no expert, but it seems to me that we have spent years using EMF detectors to very little avail. It's definitely time to come up with a new approach. Personally, I'm intrigued with the results from UV technology. An MIT engineer came up with a device using UV to investigate activity in his own building and it produced some amazing pictures, but the only investigators that I am aware of who have used this device were the guys from Ghost Adventures. They got some good results with it, too.

When you ask many people waving K2 and other EMF detectors around why they are doing so, they will tell you it is because they will show you the presence of ghosts. Where did they learn it? On television. Or from people who saw it on television. For the most part, we don't know what EMF readings are telling us, nor do you ever see anyone actually recording the readings and other conditions as the needle jumps. They just watch for the light or the needle jump and then say "ghost!"

I was on a public ghost thing recently, and I saw a lot of the non-investigators carrying around some form of an EMF detector, and getting really excited whenever it spiked. They have been conditioned to believe that if they see a needle jump or a light shimmer, it must mean ghost.

I guess the main thing that makes me think EMFs MIGHT be able to detect "paranormal" activity is when you have a combination of events at one time. For instance:

1. Cold draft felt by investigators

2. EVP caught on recorder

3. EMF spike detected

… all at the same time. This impresses me and does not seem coincidental.

True, but what does all of that mean, exactly? Here we have a series of concurrent events that seem to have a causal correlation. What's the cause though? We're making a huge leap of faith to say "spirit of a dead person."

One of the other forums asked a simple question. What is on your wish list for paranormal investigating? One of mine was a device or setup that could monitor the EMF in a room in a total 360 degree fashion and show it real time on a computer screen. That way you could see a spike in the EMF and watch if it goes anywhere. Give me this contraption and an apparition being seen at the same time that corresponds to the visible presence of a ghost and then I'll believe that EMF can be related to the paranormal.

That would be a seriously groovy device, Ryan. Actually being able to track electro-magentism moving throughout a room – now that would be an interesting phenomena.

Yep, that's the exact nature of paranormal investigation at this point in time. Testing, theories, guesses … taking huge leaps with any such "evidence" that's put out there involving paranormal investigation. At this point, we can't prove causal correlations with any form of "paranormal detection equipment."

Hopefully, one day we will.

As for my post, what I am saying is that multiple "happenings" at one time impresses me more than, say, one single experience, EVP, etc.

Yeah – it definitely is more impressive that way. I still wish I knew what it all meant though. Like when Jim had his two IR lights physically switch (seemingly on their own) to the "off position" at the same time that we had a few cameras and recorders turn off – it certainly makes you wonder WTH is up.

Something like that definitely seems paranormal to me.

It does to me, too. I'm just in a phase right now where I'm realizing how many assumptions I make when I investigate.
