Is there such thing as coincidence? Some people say yes, some say no. When do coincidences become more than coincidence and indicative of a pattern? Or do we too readily see coincidence as patterns?

Debate away – I'm looking forward to people's responses!

I don't believe in coincidence either. I believe everything that has happened to me up until this point in my life has had a reason.

Well, except when I got sand in my shorts at the beach, and I hadn't even been in the water. I can't figure that one out. /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

About six months ago, I had a dream about a woman who used to work for me. Let's call her Olivia. When I awoke from that dream, I asked myself how I might explain the coincidence when she called me the next day, which she did. I might have felt "weirded" out had not I known that statistically-speaking such an event would be far "weirder" had it never occurred.

Confirmation bias – you wouldn't remember had she not called following the dream. It would have taken on no significance.

I'm guessing you know what I am going to say about this. I am on the fence. I do believe that coincidences occur. But when there are a whole lot of coincidences at once, I do wonder if there is something more to it.

i belive in coincidences. I don't think everything is a sign from above/below/nature/ whatever you believe. Things just happen that are kooky enough to make you stop and go huh, but thats it. I once dated a guy who had the same building and apartment number as me, what did it mean… nothing really. I'd like to believe that some things do happen for a reason, but those are suttle and happen less then we would like to believe

2012? Seriously? I survived Y2K, 9/11, 6/6/6, 9/9/9, H1N1, & Swine Flu. BRING IT ON!!!

I sort of have the same thoughts on this. But when there is a flurry of coincidences, I wonder if it's more of an ESP type of thing?

If there is such a thing? Seems to mean something more, some how.

I'm not sure about coincidences, but I do believe that everything happens for a reason. I also think that people come into our lives not only when we need them, but when we are supposed to encounter them. There are some people that have come into my life that I've wondered "Why are they here?" and discovered they had a very important lesson to teach me. And there are others that I have felt as if I've known my whole life and it was just a matter of time before we were bound to come together. It's the latter that I find most compelling. Not to mention those types of people are the ones that usually stay in your life and help not only guide you on your journey of life, but offer something that no one else can. Coincidences, not so much. Fate? Destiny? To a degree. I have learned a lot about myself as a result of recent events in my life (those who know me, know what I'm referring to) and I know that some people have entered my life for a very important purpose and those people I will cherish for the rest of my life (you know who you are). I have also learned that the people you can really count on in life are truly a gift and not to be taken for granted. I have people like that in my life now for the first time in a long time, and it feels like I am finally whole and complete. Was it a coincidence that just as I needed them, they came? Perhaps, but I like to think of it more as we were fated to be in each others lives at that particular moment, for that particular reason, and that they will always be a part of who I am and who I will be.

While you might think some of what I've said sounds like the very definition of what a coincidence is, I disagree. I think coincidences are more forced and contrived than that. I think we can create a coincidence by our actions, not by something external forcing our hand.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. hehe

No, I believe that everything happens for a reason, even bad things. I think it has to do with karma & past lives.

My dad was a mechanic on a dirt-track race car from 1967 – 1985, and he died in 2001 of cancer. Well, we honored him at his funeral for all of his years of working on those racing cars, always given the #28. Well, we hung two checkered-flags on the wall above his casket at the funeral home, and had to purchase those flags at a local card, florist and party store. When we got the bill for the checkered-flags which represented his racing career, their cost was $28.00. Yep, 28 dollars and 0 cents. Coincidence, or a sign from beyond? That was "no coincidence," because what would be the chances? What are the chances that my dad worked 18 years on a #28 race car, only to have the checkered-flags at his funeral cost exactly $28.00? No coincidence to me, none whatsoever!

If you think you can trust your government, then just ask a "Native American Indian."

I believe in coincidence. Some things just happen with no real connection at all, it's just well, a coincidence /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

BUT, I dont believe that everything that is chalked up to coincidence is that.

I believe some things happen because there is a purpose to them.

So, I guess I believe in both.

Hi Poet – Welcome! Glad you are with us.

Yeah – that could be a tough one to chalk up as coincidence, that's for sure.

Heidi – I also agree with you. Some things are significant. Some are just what they are.

As a mechanic and former racer I welcome you to the PUG Midnight Poet !

As to coincedence it is so debatable ! I believe everyone has free will !

For freewill to exist there could be no preordination and vice versa. That

leaves me with the outlook that there are coincedences but they are of no

consequence.

Thanks everyone for welcoming me, I appreciate that! I do believe in "both," but, as Heidi stated, you cannot chalk up everything as a "coincidence," because sometimes that is a way for people to get out of explaining the unexplainable. I agree that "sometimes" unusual things do happen just by accident, but, sometimes I strongly believe that there are things which happen, and it's the "timing" which makes me believe in whether or not it is coincidence or not.

I work with a guy who used to be married to a lady who had 5 family members who all 5 died tragicly(violent deaths), and all 5 died in 5 different accidents, and all died on a Friday The 13th. This happened to the same family! No suicides, no murders, just 5 tragic accidents, and all 5 occured on a Friday The 13th. Whose going to be bold enough to say that all 5 of those were "just a coincidence?" Not I! /unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

I dont know, some things "just happen" it's hard to say.

My first 3 kids were all born on a Wednesday. Coincidence?

probably, because there really is no significance to them

all being born on a Wed.

my last son's c-section was scheduled for…you guessed it a Wed,

not a date I picked, it was the day that the doc was on call.

BUT my son had other plans and came 3 weeks early…on a Tue.

guess he didnt want to be part of a coincidence /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

MidnightPoet the odds, with 3+billion people on this planet is that it has happened to a thousand other families on

this planet and within the last 500 years. I'm not being bold just saying that it helps to imagine the whole picture before

assigning occurences a mystical air.

PooperDooper, the last time I checked, there are over 6 billion people on this planet, almost 7 now, so 3 billion is not very many! Let me give you some "coincidences," as you call them!

I was born on the "18th" of May.

I was born in "1962" (1+9+6+2= "18")

I was born at 9:54 a.m.(9+5+4= "18")

I was "18" inches long at birth.

I was adopted in the "18th" month of my life.

The last 4 digits of my Social Security Number add up to "18"

I turned "18" on May 18, 1980(1+9+8+0= "18")

My zipcode ends with "18"

My time-card serial number at work adds up to "18"

My shipper number at work(they gave it to me), yep, "18"

Want me to keep going? I can!

No Coincidence! Everything happens for a reason, even the littlest of things. Yes, we have "free will," but when things happen which free-will cannot control, nor has anything to do with, then there is no way to explain it. It falls into the realm of "the unexplainable."

If you think you can trust your government, then just ask a "Native American Indian."
