This is a genuinely horrific story! I cannot even begin to imagine being trapped in my body like that. For 23 frickin years!!

I get that his family must be very happy to know he's "in there," but how awful.

An another note, his family could also be shaking in their boots about now too; what did they say about this guy when they thought he couldn't hear them?

Makes one wonder, doesn't it?

Imagine there's no heaven, it's easy if you try.

VERY

I'm not sure what's more horrifying…what that poor man is going through or that bioethics doctor from the U of P equating the therapist as essentially quija board science? I can sort of see his point in making the comment and there is MUCH to gain, but how low of a slug would you have to be to prey on people like that?

Another thing I found shocking was this paragraph from the story:

"His studies showed that some 40 percent of patients with consciousness disorders are wrongly given a diagnosis of a vegetative state."

I'm not sure if I heard correctly or not, but I thought I read somewhere that the expression graveyard shift referred to someone in town who would watch over a grave site of a newly buried person to make sure they were dead because medicine and science was so unevolved. I thought I heard that a small wire was placed into the coffin and ran up to a bell on the surface. If someone had been accidently buried alive, the could pull the cord which would ring the bell and hopefully alert someone of their situation

That is true, I learned that in one of my mortuary science classes. That was a common practice back in the day. I'll have to look it up again, I believe they referred to it as something else too….

It is where the term "Dead Ringer" came from I believe?

Seriously scary to think of being buried alive. I guess these days that doesn't happen given the embalming process.

But back then … I think we'd be surprised at how many times it probably actually happened.

Absolutely appalling!!

Pregnant Woman Dies After EMTs Refuse to Help

New York officials are investigating two emergency medical practitioners [EMT] after they allegedly refused to help a pregnant woman who collapsed while they were taking a break, the New York Post has reported.

According to witnesses, when the Fire Department paramedics were approached for help during their coffee break, they suggested the staff call 911.

They left when they were asked to help Eutisha Revee Rennix, an employee at the downtown Brooklyn coffee shop Au Bon Pain.

It is believed that 25-year-old Rennix had suffered a seizure and was struggling to breathe.

An ambulance was called by her fellow employees, and she was taken to hospital but later died along with her unborn baby girl.

In response to the incident the Fire Department of New York suspended the medical practitioners involved, without pay while investigations continue, spokesman Steve Ritea said.

"Our people tend to spring into action whether they're on duty, off duty, whatever they're doing," said Robert Ungar, spokesman for the Uniformed EMTS and Paramedics, FDNY, explaining that Emergency medical practitioners consider themselves to be on call 24 hours a day.

The local EMTs have a "very strong bond with the people of New York City that they serve," he said. "They view themselves as always being on duty."

The union is awaiting the results of the investigation, "If there was unprofessional conduct by these EMTs, the union does not condone any type of conduct which in any way can harm members of the public," he said.

Furious at the incident, Mayor Michael Bloomberg reportedly blasted the two EMTs, "It was unconscionable, [an] outrage, pick some adjectives and stick it in," and then called for a return to common decency.

"The Fire Department, including EMS, is responsible for life-saving, and their first responsibility is to do that," the mayor said. "But even if they weren't part of the Fire Department sworn to protect all of us, just normal human beings, drop your coffee and go help somebody if they're dying. C'mon."

Rennix leaves behind a toddler son and grieving family.

Imagine there's no heaven, it's easy if you try.

I heard this on the news tonight, WTF? Hope they not only lose their jobs, but they need to be punished by the law. She could have lived if they had gotten up and taken care of her!

I was a fireman for awhile before getting sick and can not imagine what was going through their heads. I think they should lose their certification & job, along with being charged with everything they could possibly be charged with as they are a disgrace to the profession /angry.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

What a horrible event. So tragic. I can't imagine someone in that position refusing to help. /dry.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I imagine they will never work in that field again.

Personally, if you take away their ability to earn a living you take away what I think should become their NEW financial responsibility and that is to take care of all the funeral expenses and forced to pay for her surviving child's future. I believe they should have to begin the new chapter in their career by working at Riker's Island,Rahway or Sing Sing's infirmiry. It's exactly this kind of attitude that disgusts me about our culture/society.

Cat Jury Duty – Boston Kitty Denied Disqualification, Expected at Court

An East Boston cat has been called to jury duty. Will the kitty be able to perform his civic duty? Even though he has asked to be excused Sal Esposito (a real life four-legged feline) is expected to show up for court and render judgment on someone in Massachusetts.

The family believes that Sal may be thought to be "human" as they included him on the census form. According to MSNBC News, on the last Census form, Anna Esposito listed him under pets. 'I just wrote 'Sal Esposito', scratched out the 'dog,' and wrote, 'cat,'' said Anna, according to the report.

Once the jury summons arrived at the residence, Anna filed for Sal's disqualification of service, but the jury commissioner said no! Now what?

The report adds, "Sal's service date at Suffolk Superior Court is set for March 23. Anna said that if the issue isn't cleared up by then, she will simply have to bring the cat to court."

The ridiculously sad part is that the cat would probably do better then most humans on a jury!! /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />
