OfflineAs some of you may have heard, even though you are from other parts of the country other then New York, NY (D) Congressman Anthony Weiner . (yes, his name is Weiner, which makes this whole story even more funny) is alleged to have tweeted a photo of his er..bulging package to a female college student in Seattle. He claims he didn't do it and that his account was hacked. Then when seeing the photo he could not answer if that was or was not a photo of his package.
The fact that his name his Weiner has added a whole new demension onto the whole story. And he also tweets to porn star.

Ann Coulter quipped that the whole thing should be settled in small claims court. I thought that was hilarious!

OfflineI like Sarah just because she is such a burr in the butt of the media. They hate her so much that it's hilarious. I keep waiting for one of their head's to explode. That would be fun.
Can you believe MSNBC is on her because she has an American Flag painted on her tour bus? Apparently they consider that a degradation of the flag.
They had no objection to the picture of Ayers standing on the American flag with a smug look on his murdering face, but using it on a tour bus is NOT okay. Good to know.
If we could harness hypocrisy we wouldn't need oil anymore.
The sight of all those journalists scrambling to follow her bus is hysterically funny. They're so afraid of losing her that they are doing things like running red lights and relieving themselves on the side of the road in view of all the other journalists. She has them all acting in their own words "like paparazzii following Princess Diana". /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
Love her or hate her, the woman is never dull!
OfflineGO AWAY SARAH AND TAKE YOUR "FAMILY" WITH YOU.***
Amen, Monk!
Yes, I agree that she, much like Bush, is great for a stupid soundbite, but the insanity has to stop somewhere!!
Offline(sighs heavily, head in hands )
I loathe giving this person any consideration as it adds to her "juice", but it's got to be said. Sarah Palin is not a very intelligent person when it comes to "academia" BUT she is VERY savvy….if not her then someone in her retinue. There used to be an expression that "there's no such thing as bad publicity". The thought being that you get a FREE platform to express your thoughts or promote your cause(s). I DON'T blame Sarah Palin, I blame the MEDIA for giving her so much exposure. If they'd just stop covering her, she'd go away. The thing I don't understand is that everything she's done and her background would've SUNK anyone else. In fact, far less has sunk greater people. She somehow is immune to it and seems to be ever moving forward. Have the American people become that dumb that they don't realize who and what this woman is and how completely dangerous she'd be in a position of power? Y'know, back in the day, the media would do it's own self checks and would've written her off as a buffoon, but now w/so much competition and the tabloid journalism that seems to have infected even the major news outlets. It's pathetically sad.
Again, I have to throw the card in my deck that bothers me the most in society…the double standard card. As always I wish there was an even playing field for everyone and there is not. Even for Sarah Palin, she deserves to play on just such a field, BUT she should also have to adhere to the same rules of conduct and decency if she wants to be taken seriousily. Would it have killed her to at least made a half hearted apology and toned down her rhetoric after the congresswoman in Arizona was shot? What did she do? She immediately started defending herself and the whole free speech thing and doing the victim routine. I detest (in a fashion mere words cannot adequately shape into expression) people who when caught wrong, dead to rights wrong, hands in the cookie jar wrong, if loving you is wrong I don't want to be right wrong play the victim. It definitely sets my bp percolating in a very unhealthy area. She expects everyone else to play by "the rules" while she can run around say whatever crosses that brain of hers and never has to suffer any consequences. I wonder if she looked like Helen Thomas if they would give her the same breaks? She (SP) is just another one of those people out there that if they TRULY cared about America, then do everyone a favor and GO AWAY (I put donald trump in that category too).
As far as the flag on her bus…why shouldn't she be allowed?? Greyhound has been doing it for years.

OfflineMonk, you have put into words much more succinctly than I ever could, why I dislike Sarah Palin. At first, I was wowed by her because she appeared to be pretty amazing but her true colors quickly came to light. I now view her as a distraction not worth my time or attention. I have no problem with her having a flag on her bus but I have a list as long as my arm detailing all the other things about her that I disagree with. I am tired of her presence, her message and her ignorance. As always, these are my personal opinions and I understand some folks will disagree.

Can you please elucidate why Sarah Palin was to blame for some wacko liberal shooting Congresswoman Giffords? I'm certainly not her biggest fan, but I don't think she can be held accountable for the actions of someone else any more than Nancy Pelosi could be held accountable for Eric Cantor having his office windows shot out. Just my opinion.
The shooter had a grudge against Giffords that stemmed from how she answered a question at one of her town hall meetings. I really don't think Sarah is to blame for that.
As for media double standards, what about the Rev. Wright sermon about "G-D America"? Sarah is attacked because she belongs to what the media snidely refers to as an evangelical church, Mitt Romney is criticized for being a Mormon and Huckaby is mocked because he was once a minister, but journalists actually created Journolist to protect Obama after that story came out.
Double standards are everywhere. The biggest one is that all women politicians are fair game in a way that men are not. For example, the photo of Sarah in running shorts was loudly decried, but Scott Brown posed nude for a magazine and that was just a joke. Even Hilary Clinton was treated differently than the male candidates, having her clothing and hair made fun off all the time. Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the house, is criticized for her botox and hair. What man gets those kind of personal attacks, other than the current Speaker of the House (yes, he is orange).
I actually think Sarah Palin gets treated so badly by the media because she is beautiful. If she looked like Helen Thomas, they'd take her a lot more seriously IMHO. You can say a lot of things about Sarah, but she's not dumb. She was the governor of a state, after all and a very popular one. She may not have gone to an Ivy League university, but she got her degree the hard way – she worked to pay for it. She even used the winnings from a beauty pageant to pay for school and she's been widely mocked for that as well. Diane Sawyer also got her start in a beauty pageant.
I could go on and on, but I won't. I'll just say that Sarah has every right to speak her mind. If the media doesn't like it, then they should just stop following her around like she's the pied piper.

I look at this and am amazed at how many points we agree upon.
Like you, I'm not a fan of the way a lot of powerful women are portrayed and have said as much over in the captions thread (specifically Hilary, Michelle Obama and West German Chancellor Angela Merkel, it's almost a conspiracy the pictures that are published of them). What can I say about society that you don't already know, there's a bias towards men. Sadly, it's not just this country that has the problem.
As far as her religious affiliations…couldn't care less, not an issue for me nor should it be for anyone else. As far as people taking pot shots at Pelosi for things other then her politics is wrong and disrespectful (I'm unfamiliar w/the Cantor-Pelosi issue, will look into it). That Reverend Wright thing was an ugly situation but I don't think the Obama administration is the only one that has had a list of "preferred" reporters in the pool to go to for softball questioning.
Most importantly we agree that the media REALLY needs to stop following her around for the sound bytes. It's simple, don't cover her and she'll go away.
You raise a good point in that her looks are a double edged sword, but I think the thing that really hurts her most is her lack of polish. You just have to surround yourself w/some decent advisors that will prepare you for these situations. NOT doing so is not wise. But I will say after GW Bush and all his gaffs perhaps she's not so dumb.
I didn't say she was to blame for the Giffords' shooting. Her lack of polish (again) made her appear unsympathetic and a little irresponsible in how she handles her business. It just seems she never misses an opportunity to self promote (much like Trump) and it's for this among other reasons I don't care for her.
That having been said, as Americans we ALL have a right to freedom of speech, but perhaps she should exercize a little more caution and thought into the message (s) she wishes to convey.

Why are you surprised that we agree on so many points? I'm not. We're smart people. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

I agree with everything you say, actually. She is unpolished, but she's just a small town girl. I think a lot of people find her off the cuff candor endearing after all the sanitized speeches they hear from so many politicos. As for promoting herself, all true, but this is America and it's what people do. She's always raising money for her PAC and every promotion helps.
I also think people admire her because she is so darn gutsy. No matter how much the press abuses her, she just comes back fighting. She's like a weeble – she wobbles, but she won't fall down. She and her husband are so much more "real" than so many political couples, too. I think it's very appealing to a lot of people that he is unabashedly proud of her AND crazy about her and vice versa. It shows in every picture they take.
Personally, I think that's one reason she gets up so many NOW types noses. She's beautiful, she has a loving, supportive husband, she has children and she's a powerful woman who made it completely on her own. She didn't marry into power, she earned it for herself. I like that and a lot of other women do too.
I think that's what makes me maddest about how women are treated. So much of the bad treatment comes from other women and I find that disgusting. Sarah has done everything that NOW fought so hard for us to be able to do. Work, have a family, have it all really. But instead of pointing her out as a success story, they attack her at every turn. No group that attacks any other woman should be allowed to call themselves the national organization of women, IMHO. They certainly don't represent me and I'm about as big a feminist as you get. I just think women have the right to disagree with me and they don't seem to feel that way.
One tiny point of disagreement: other candidates have had reporters who ask soft questions, but to the best of my knowledge no other candidate had a group of journalists who actually banded together to figure out how to "spin" a story for a particular candidate. That is so far from the purpose of journalism that it is absolutely shocking.
I do agree that everyone's religion is their own business and isn't anyone else's. The same goes for politicians as far as I'm concerned.
Okay, off my soapbox for the day. Thanks for reading and responding.

As far as the self promotion goes it's okay to leave some of the money on the table, if you know what I mean. By grabbing EVERY opportunity, there IS such a thing as over exposure and it dilutes the "brand". If she picked and chose her spots, it would do wonders for her image.
I don't understand why people take it upon themselves to tear down things they personally don't want to be part of…."haters". It's so much easier to sit back and critique then to get in there and make a difference. Politics make strange bedfellows.
I don't know at what point the tabloid journalism became the standard, but spin doctoring has been around for ages. But yeah journalistic intergrity has long since gone by the way side. Shocking but not suprising.

OfflineThe point about powerful women getting the brunt of crap resonated with me. Remember how everyone treated Clinton when she ran? The media? There were people in her own party calling her some pretty unsavory names. When she was at an event, some men (and I use that term loosely) started yelling that she should iron their shirts. That's the day I became a Clinton supporter. She had the MOST primary votes in HISTORY for any candidate. And you see what happened with that.
I can't stand Palin either, but speaking as a woman, the constant barrage against her and her family needs to tone the hell down.
Kat's point about women tearing other women apart is very, very true. They can be vicious. I'm willing to bet a lot of them haven't picked up a history book or studied basic Sociology to learn about what women have gone through to get where we are today, and what is still going on in this country and abroad, based on their behavior and words. It's appalling.
As far as the term feminist is concerned, it's had a huge negative light cast on it because of these fringe groups. True feminists are not man-hating, Dr. Marten-wearing, narrow-minded kooks. It's supposed to come from a place of love, support, and fighting for what's just.
In fact, this topic was one teensy little morsel that inspired me to go into Sociology, Human Services, and concentrate on Women's and Children's issues. My job is related to this cause as well. I feel strongly about it. Sorry. /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />
Anyway, thanks for letting me in on the rant. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
OfflineOh, and Monk, when news became available in a 24-hour format is when it started to change. They needed dirt, and a lot of it. Tabloid journalism was born! Walter Cronkite had a problem with the news after that happened, for obvious reasons.
OfflineAnd now for something completely different! Hear about the floods? Yeah, we're dealing with that right now.
Here is an article about Hamburg, Iowa. This town is roughly 30 minutes from where we lived in Missouri. /sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> I hope everyone gets out of this okay…
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/201…..605/ap_on_…_river_flooding
OfflineInteresting how the floods have had such widespread effects. Here in KS, we had a huge rain event a week ago Sunday and have not really recovered yet because we are not allowed to release much water due to the Missouri and Mississippi River's overflowing. We are so far away but our lakes (Corps of Engineer) are so full, they are higher than I have ever seen. Our rivers that are fed from these lakes are so high that just the tree tops are visible and creeks that I never even noticed before look like major riverways. Luckily, we had a hot and dry weekend to help keep the water levels from going higher. It is just interesting to see the far reaching effects of the floods north, east and south of us.
I also learned a bit about storm water run off from agricultural areas is not always better for the environment due to the pesticides and fertilizers farmers use on their crops.
One more thing that always makes me wonder is why people choose to rebuild in areas that are constantly being flooded, or subject to wildfire and mudslides. Maybe the view is wonderful or you can make more money farming or fishing here but if you are going to take the risk then that risk is yours so I am hesitant to support rebuilding efforts in areas that have historically been subject to the same natural disasters over and over again. Just throwing my two cents in!
