My blog for today:

Reconnect

by Karen Frazier

The recent hate crime beating of a transgender woman named Chrissy Lee Polis in a Baltimore McDonalds disturbs many. In a video posted on YouTube (which I cannot bring myself to watch), two young women reportedly beat Ms. Polis viciously to the point of a seizure while one McDonald's employee films and the rest stand looking on. In the three minute video, it is reported, only one middle aged woman attempts to help.

How is it, people ask, that we have come to this point as a society? Regardless of how you feel about the transgender issue, consider this for just a moment: two young women felt justified in hurting someone for being different while people stood and watched the vicious beating of a human being and did nothing. At the same time, millions have also flocked to YouTube to watch the video. What have we come to?

We live in an age of disconnection when people outside of our immediate circle may not seem quite real to us. After all, we can interact with others with impunity on the Internet, sitting tucked safely behind our keyboards, meeting across a screen rather than looking into each other's eyes. In this way, people appear two-dimensional, detached from the same level of human emotion that we each have ourselves. Whether we believe it or not, the technology age has detached us from simple connection and compassion on an emotional level. At the same time, the "reality" television shows we watch provide one-dimensional characterizations of the people onscreen, reducing a complex and multi-faceted human being to a simple stereotype to better allow us to apply a label easily. We allow this manipulation for entertainment's sake, but we often do so at the risk of our own psyches.

People, however, are not labels. Chrissy Lee Polis was given a label – transgender – but she is more than that. She is a human being with hopes, fears, joys, concerns, and insecurities that would probably look startlingly familiar to both the young women that attacked her, and also to each person who has watched her beating either in-person or in video form. If all of those people stopped for a moment to look into Chrissy Lee Polis' eyes and talk to her on a human level, they might be shocked to see so much of themselves reflected back.

When we turn people into one-note characterizations we do so out of fear and insecurity. By stripping another of all that makes them human, we can feel some sort of power and superiority. We can revel in our own inherent "rightness." It's all around us, this tendency. Not only do you see it on the screens you watch, but it is also in political movements, religious movements, and all of the fractionalization of our society. In order to feel better about our own beliefs and positions, we reduce those who don't agree with us to something simple that we can then dismiss. Once we do this, we can spend all day reveling in how "right" we are, because we've made the other guy wrong.

Here's the problem, however. Human beings aren't that simple. Just because someone disagrees with me politically, spiritually or socially, just because they look different than me, just because they love differently than me doesn't make them wrong and me right. Nor do my beliefs, ideals, preferences, and behaviors make me inherently superior to anyone. If I choose to feel superiority in order to gain power, than it is false power I am reaching for. After all, that initial rush of power we feel when we revel in our own superiority quickly subsides, otherwise we wouldn't be on to the next victim so quickly.

It is false power that we reach for when we behave in this manner. While it's true that many of us never reach the level of beating someone we don't understand to a seizure, we each commit small "hate crimes" of our own on a daily basis in order to feel better about ourselves. We flip off the guy who cut us off in traffic. We make a snotty comment in a forum to someone we disagree with rather than addressing the issue respectfully. We make snap judgments about people based on a single fact or set of facts. Each of these things by themselves are tiny, really. They happens so often we barely notice, but they slowly erode our sense of connection with those around us, as well as our own sense of personal empowerment.

So if proving that we are right does not bring true power and wellbeing into our lives, what does? I believe the answer lies in two simple words: connection and empowerment. When we take a moment to truly connect with another, we can also reconnect with ourselves. Regardless of how different someone is from me, when I actually make the effort to honestly see them, I am always shocked at how much of myself I see reflected back. And when I step forward and actually attempt to empower another? When I do so, I also empower myself.

It's simple, really, how easily we could begin to reconnect as a species in order to empower one another. All we have to do is get out in the world and start to look in each others' eyes once again. I'm not talking about the banal exchange you have with the grocery store clerk, I'm talking about making an actual connection – the kind where your eyes meet someone else's, and just for a moment you attempt to see the spirit that exists beyond the superficial facade. Try it first with someone that you perceive is "like" you. Then, when you're ready, challenge yourself and try it with someone who you perceive as "different." Sure their appearance, religion, skin color, sexual preference, politics, socioeconomic class, or a myriad of other factors we view as "important" may be different than yours, but when you actually connect with them, you will be shocked at the similarities. They have hopes, dreams and fears just as you do. They have passion and compassion. They are, as you are, human beings just doing the best they can to make it through this world in the best way they are able. Perhaps if we could begin to reconnect, we could all do so together.

As an addendum to my previous post, here is a petition for McDonald's to change their anti-discrimination policy.

McDonald's Petition

Signed.

The problem is that all the training and all the laws in the world won''t stop these incidents from happening. It is against the law to commit assault, but that didn't stop the two assailants in this case from viciously attacking one woman and punching another in the face. Murder is against the law too but there have been two shootings inside McDonald's restaurants this week alone. We have laws. What we need is enforcement.

IMHO, what's required here is security staff. That's the only thing that will protect customers and employees from the escalating violence in fast food restaurants, particularly McDonald's. Nightclubs and shopping malls provide security staff for the safety of their customers and I personally think other places of business that have known security issues need to do the same. Some McDonald's in the UK employ bouncers, so why aren't they doing it here?

IMO, the only thing that is going to make McDonald's do the right thing is pressure from people like us. It's time for McDonald's to stop issuing press statements about how important the safety of their customers and employees is to them and start doing something about it. I realize that security staff isn't cheap, but it will be a lot less expensive than huge cash settlements paid out to victims like Ms. Polis and Ms. Thoms.

BTW: I KEEP getting this same response, whether I'm talking to a live person or contacting them by email. It's the same one they keep running in all the news stories. Grrrr!

"Thank you for sharing your comments with McDonald's and for giving us an opportunity to share some information with you.

There's no room for violence under the Golden Arches. We strongly condemn the videotaped assault in one of our Baltimore franchised restaurants. Working with the authorities, we now have more facts, and we want to share our actions with you.

First and foremost, our thoughts are with the victim during this time.

Our franchisee is investigating the behavior and response of his employees. Action has been taken, and the crew member who made the video is no longer employed by his organization. Appropriate action regarding other employees will take place as warranted.

We want to reassure our customers that your neighborhood McDonald's is a safe, welcoming place for everyone. We share our customers' concern, and we are doing everything possible to make sure the right thing is done.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact McDonald's."

McDonald's Customer Response Center

Empty words!!! Why haven't they fired the manager on duty who completely failed to follow corporate policy? My understanding is that managers are supposed to call 911 at the first hint of trouble, eject the trouble makers immediately if possible and then lock the door behind them and wait for the police to arrive. Instead, they didn't call the police until at least 10 minutes into the attack (the length of the entire video clip) and they failed to lock the doors behind the assailants when they left the first time. Instead, they allowed the assailants to reenter and continue abusing Ms. Polis and to punch Ms. Thoms. Even worse, the manager and another employee warn the attackers to flee because the police are on their way instead of helping the convulsing woman on the floor.

So why hasn't this manager been fired? What about the employee who appears to steal something that falls out of Ms. Polis' purse during the attack?

Sorry, everyone. I am just beside myself over this whole thing.

IDK. All my Brit friends seemed pretty excited about the wedding, though.

Grumpy Monkey! J/K.

I understand how you feel, but lots of people don't think it's nonsense at all. More than 1 million people lined the streets for the wedding and at least 2 billion people watched it live. It's a big deal.

Royal weddings are full of the pomp and pageantry that the British do better than anyone else. Plus, this wedding is the ultimate fairy tale ending. There's a handsome young prince in a gorgeous uniform marrying a beautiful commoner in a fabulous McQueen wedding dress. The two are obviously very much in love and that makes it even more special.

William's wedding is especially poignant for a lot of people because of the tragedy of his mother's death. Lots of us remember Diana's funeral and how our hearts went out to Harry and William, so it's really wonderful to see Will happily married. Sappy, I know, but there it is.

The day of the wedding has always been a national holiday. I'm pretty sure everyone gets paid like they would for any holiday. The whole purpose of the big royal wedding is to make the people happy and to remind them why the Royal family is a good thing for the country, so I can't imagine that people would lose a day's pay. That wouldn't go over well at all and if the Brits don't love their royals, they won't pay for them anymore. Just my two cents.

Poor William and Cate will be under a lot of pressure now to get started on producing their heir and a spare. /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' /> I wonder what will happen if their first child is a girl? Now that we're in modern times, will she be Queen or will her little brother be King? Hmmm.

Meh…I keep trying to give a d@mn and suprisingly, I don't. Never had to work a day in their lives and let's be honest….any manual labor or REAL work ever done was for a photo op. Of course it's wonderful how they're so philanthropic…they can afford to be, what else do they have to do with their time? If they want to impress me LET THEM go out in the open market w/out family influence and attempt to land a job, worry about a mortgage and PAY THE OUTRAGEOUS taxes those folks pay over there. Just not feeling it and in all fairness, wasn't so thrilled about Chuck and Di either back in the day. It must be wonderful that the highest goal in this twit's life is to be able to procreate…great work if you can get it.

Sorry to be a bummer, but when I'm sitting here worrying about medical issues, bills, holding on to my job etc I can't get swept up into this ridiculous fantasy world the media is just ramming down our throats instead of concentrating on the real issues going on around us. How 'bout those poor folks down south where entire towns are GONE? The ongoing suffering in Japan? Will and Kate…I can't relate…check my entry in the last thread…you know me….mincing words

I can understand your point of view, but the lives of the royals are not the sweet deal that people think they are. They have absolutely no privacy. They live their entire lives under a microscope. They have several public events every single day where they are obliged to show up looking perfectly groomed. They always have to be incredibly gracious even when they are exhausted or distracted. Everything they do is done for duty.

Kate's life is going to be very different now, bless her heart. No more popping into a shop or evenings at the pub with her friends. No more "normal" life at all. Every time she leaves the house it's a public appearance. She'll always be in the spotlight now.

Just imagine living in a house where you cannot have a private conversation because you never know who is listening. Having a houseful of servants sounds great, but in reality it means that you can't even have an argument without the press hearing about it from some chambermaid. You can't have a private conversation in your car because the chauffeur is listening. What a terrible way to live, IMHO. /sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

Too soon? If the circumstances of his final moments are true (and I'm hoping they are) it confirms what I always thought about him and people of his ilk….coward.

Hi Monk!

Not too soon at all, IMHO. It's about bloody time that this guy was eliminated. Personally, I'd love to see his head on a pike and his body paraded in the street, but we are civilized people so I guess that would be a bad thing to do. I'm very glad that they buried him at sea, though. At least his gravesite won't become a shrine now. Seeing images of people crowding around his grave would make me sick to my stomach.

Isn't it just typical that this jerk pretended to be living in a cave, existing on bread and water and asking all of his followers to do the same when he's really been living luxuriously for the past six years? If that doesn't throw some cold water on his many admirers, nothing will.

Of course he's a coward! He hid while his followers went out and did his dirty work. How many people has he sent to their deaths over the years? How many people, mostly muslim, has he murdered by proxy?

I sincerely hope that there's a Hell and that he's in the hottest part of it.

Nay Seals Rock!!! They should be able to collect the reward on this guy's head IMO.

Did they say how long he lived in that compound? It didn't look all that luxurious, although probably for Pakistan it was a palace.

I THINK I heard that he was there for a couple of years. Don't take my word for it, there's so much info coming in from all over the place it's hard to draw a bead on what's really gone/going on with all this. I like how the former Pakistani President, Musharef is talking all this GAR-bage about how it was wrong to not include Pakistan in the efforts leading up to the strike, yeah right, so you can alert him so he can get away again?! He's all like it's wrong blah blah blah YET he claims it's a huge victory for the Pakistani people as OBL declared war on Pakistan as well. You can't have it both ways putz, typical politician, talking out of both sides of his mouth. How long did they have to get him? OBL was living less then a mile from the front gates of the Pakistani version of West Point Military Academy and they still couldn't figure out where he was…promising future for those guys eh?

Couple of other points I'd like to bring up…

1) I'm tired of hearing how it was disrespectful to bury him at sea, I'm sorry, when did they become the authorities on NOT desecrating the remains of the dead? Hypocrites. My only concern is that his remains will contaminate the aquatic life worse then the radiation leaking from Japan into the ocean. Couple of upsides however, they can't enshrine his body and now he IS OFFICIALLY lower then whale shite!

2) Can we PLEASE get some better military contractors/vendors who can supply equipment that's not falling part? These Blackhawk helicopters don't seem to be all that great.

3) Tell me the look on Hilary Clinton's face in the Situation Room during the live feed of the strike was not priceless.

4) I'm saddened that they didn't level the place so that a shrine to him isn't created there, at the very least they should set up charges that can be detonated remotely just in case some other knucklehead sets up a base there.

(I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. -Jessica Dovey)

"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that ~Dr. MLK Jr."

Ask anyone: I am not a pacifist. However, this dancing in the streets, running around knees bent bullcrap is ludicrous. This event martyred Osama bin Laden. He wasn't made to pay for his crimes, we released him from all accountability. Not one family that lost a loved one on September 11th will gain closure from this action.

Something will be coming on the coat tails of this massacre, even while people are dancing on Pennsylvania Avenue but it won't be bold and in your face. It will be yet another attempt for our government to strip us of any Constitutional Rights and Freedoms we still cling to with clenched fists. It will be quiet, so the people celebrating won't even know about it until it is over.

This action did nothing to keep us safe…

This is all my humble opinion, which I still have the right to express. I espouse no love for Osama bin Laden.
