Well this is interesting. Prince has given the local public radio station, The Current a new song to debut on Friday morning around 7am (central standard time). Hmm, now this means I have to be awake at 7am. You can stream it if you like, using that link.

Wow, can't wait to listen.

8.8 quake rocks Chile, high risk of tsunami. Tsunami warning issued for basically entire pacific basin. Hawaii under warning, phillipines, australia. Even CA has warnings to expect higher waves/shore than usual.

Yeah – boy, that was a bad one.

I have a sis in Hawaii, but they live fairly well inland.

You know, with the Japan quake, Haiti quake, and now this one in Chile, I have to wonder if these catastrophic quakes are increasing in frequency, or have I just been subtly programmed toward panic by the 2012 mentality?

who knows

Being the fan of irony, I thought I would post todays event here in Oklahoma. In my last post above I was pondering about the increased frequency of the quakes. Wondering, in fact, if I was falling victim to paranoia with regards to the increased frequency.

Today, around 4:25pm a magnitude 5.0 quake hit here in my hometown (shawnee, ok). This was my first earthquake experience ever. Sounded like thunder then the building I was in shook just like a jello mold. There was a horizontal shift from south to north and a loud thunderous bang. Sorry, but I am pretty excited. This is a first for not only me, but this region. All my life, not so much as a tremor here. I don't know what the hell is going on seismically in the world, but I am amazed. Pole shift imminent?

still amazed…

Andy

I must be jaded at this point….we sort of live on the Hayward Fault out here so there's always something seismic (sp?) going on. The freeway (Cypress Fwy)that pancaked w/a few fatalities during the Loma Priata (World Series)Earthquake used to be in front of our old building in Oakland. Don't get me started on weird goings on at that place. Doors opening and closing on their own when there was no wind to cause a vacuum…I might also point out that these doors were uneven and would take quite a bit of elbow grease to open or close completely. Odd shadows moving across the front of the building (area closest to where the freeway used to be) and voices in parts of the building where there were no staff and no vents for the voices to carry. The area behind the building under all the freeways was referred to as "Death Valley" because all the gangs dump their bodies back there in the weeds and undergrowth along the railroad tracks. It wasn't uncommon to see cadaver dogs sniffing around at least once a week.

Yep – if you're not used to them, they can be a little bit disconcerting when you experience one.

The quake may have shifted the Earth's axis and shortened our day!!! /ohmy.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' /> /ohmy.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' /> /ohmy.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

Wow. It doesn't get much more awesome than that.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (March 2, 2010)—A mad emu that was running loose early Tuesday near Interstate 10 in El Paso snarled rush hour traffic and even attacked the deputies who were trying to restrain it.

A release from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday to a report of an ostrich in the roadway, only to discover that the wayward bird was actually an emu.

Deputies tried to prevent the tall, flightless bird from running into traffic on I-10, but when deputies neared the emu, it became aggressive, and even lunged at them.

The Sheriff's Office said a passerby stopped to help the deputies contain and calm the bird, which slashed one deputy's pant leg.

The deputy was not seriously injured, but the emu died as it was being taken to an animal control shelter.

The cause of the big bird’s death was not immediately known.

This is true, and it's sad.

I was in no way celebrating the quake, just marveling at the global effects of it.

It's interesting, isn't it. I read Japan's quake, which was higher caused less movement.

They seemed to be expecting more.

Something about being close the the equator.

As we saw w/the devastation of the Haiti quake, there are lots of contributing factors that effect the movement and subsequent damage. The earthquakes themselves come in a variety of forms and it depends on the depth and location (naturally). But the damage that results usually depends upon construction techniques. Chile's quake, while stronger, didn't do as much damage as Haiti for two reasons: 1)Chile experiences quite a bit of seismic activity and they utilize lots of rebar and such when doing construction 2) the earthquake was centered in a less inhabited area in Chile then Haiti. Haiti in addition to it's economic woes, also doesn't have regular seismic activity (to the best of my knowledge) and their usual natural disaster phenomenon would be hurricanes. So construction there would lean more towards masonry then carpentry. Experts say stone/brick builidings are more dangerous then wooden structures in a quake situation as the energy released through the ground can travel through wood and be dispersed. Wood will torque and bend which is a little safer as concrete, bricks etc don't have as much "play". The Loma Priata (world series earthquake) was so devasting because the earthquake was so strong it pulverized the earth and concrete foundations into sand (specifically around the Cypress Expressway in oakland and the Marina district over in the city) causing massive structural strain that caused stuff to shift.

Well, now there's an earthquake over in Turkey, 6.0 if I read correctly.

It boggles the mind what tectonic activity can set off.
