OfflineCliff notes on the Kinks is this:
Erratic behavior during concerts and even more eccentric subject matter in their songs has made their career sort of hit or miss at times. Volatile relationship between the Davies brothers has not helped. The Kinks sort of closed shop in 1996. At the time they'd lost their recording contract. Ray Davies still performs as a solo act and survived a stabbing. His brother Dave had a stroke in 2004 but recovered in 2006 and is believed to be able to tour again in 2010. Other members have passed away or ran afoul of the Davies brothers. Opinions are mixed as to whether or not they will ever get back together again. I too liked the Kinks and one of my favorite albums (yeah I said album as in Vinyl is the Kinks – Give the People what they want.) I used to own Arthur on tape and Sleepwalker. Great Band and just loads of great tunes…Waterloo Sunset, All day and all of the night, Lola, You Really Got Me, Sunny Afternoon, Village Green, Victoria, ApeMan, SleepWalker, Low Budget, Destroyer, Around the Dial, So Tired, Set Me Free, Well Respected Man About Town, Where Have All the Good Times Gone, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, 20th Century Man, Celluloid Heroes, Jukebox Music, Rock N Roll Fantasy, Father Christmas, Gallon Of Gas, Catch Me now I'm Fallin', Superman, Better Things, Come Dancing….who else but the Kinks? God now I want to update my Kinks collection.
I'm also finding myself liking the Clash and their various side/solo projects as I've gotten older
Holy crap! Ray Davies got STABBED??? Geez.
I like their music a lot, but no wonder we haven't heard form them lately. Yikes!
Ah, the Clash! I loved them! I haven't heard any of their solo projects or side projects, as far as I know. "Should I Stay or Should I Go" is on my favs list, up there with "I wanna be sedated" by the Ramones. Pure feel good music. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Upon further review, not stabbed but shot in the leg by a purse snatcher in NOLA 2004. I'd heard he'd gotten stabbed in San Francisco though…my bad.
Joe Strummer had some really interesting side projects specifically the 101ers. Mick Jones had Big Audio Dynamite which was a really cool band too and I highly recommend their first release "This is Big Audio Dynamite".

Thanks, Monk. I'll check it out when I get a chance.

OfflineThis is so strange! My husband and I were listening to the soundtrack from "Elizabethtown" in the car today during the first hour of a 13 hour drive back from our birth state and this song came on. I told hubby that I thought it was a Stephen Foster song but he wouldn't believe me. Needless to say, I had to Google it as soon as we got home and I got to hear my three favorite words – "You were right".
/laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
The group on the soundtrack (eastmountainsouth) does it very differently. Here's the link to a live version:
The version on the soundtrack is better, obviously, but you get the gist from the video. The way they do it is very haunting and ethereal (at least IMHO).
Wouldn't Mr. Foster get a kick out of the fact that people are still performing and relating to this song more than 155 years after it was written? I don't know what the original version sounded like now, but somewhere in this house is a "Stephen Foster Songbook" from my childhood visit to "The Stephen Foster Story", so hopefully I can figure it out.
My largest character flaw…and my husband was aware when he married me…is that my four favorite words in the ENTIRE English language are I TOLD YOU SO. I love Elizabethtown and now that you have brought it up, I may have to watch it tonight. I listened to that version, but I am so spoiled by the musicianship of Taylor, O'Connor, Meyer and Yo-Yo Ma that I can barely listen to another. I sing along…don't care who listens.

Luckless pedestrian
I know you're out there
With rage in your eyes and your megaphones
Saying all is forgiven
Mad Dog surrender
How can I answer
A man of my mind can do anything
CHORUS:
I'm a bookkeeper's son
I don't want to shoot no one
Well I crossed my old man back in Oregon
Don't take me alive
Got a case of dynamite
I could hold out here all night
Yes I crossed my old man back in Oregon
Don't take me alive
Can you hear the evil crowd
The lies and the laughter
I hear my inside
The mechanized hum of another world
Where no sun is shining
No red light flashing
Here in this darkness
I know what I've done
I know all at once who I am
CHORUS

This is a deeply personal song for me and I'd like to take this moment to dedicate to it my friend Theresa because I know how hard you are hurting right now. I lost my father when I was 18 and it felt like my whole world had imploded. Nothing seemed to matter anymore and I seriousily pursued a dangerous path to try to understand why….I never got the anwers I sought and it took about a decade out of my life. For you, my friend I sincerely pray that you don't devaste yourself like i did and are confident in the knowledge that you did all you could do…
