OfflineHello all I cannot remember the last time i logged onto this website and want to say hi to everyone that remembers me =D but also I have questions. I am going into the marine corps and if anyone here has exp. with that please share all the info you have from the physical test to get in to the quiality of the meals at supper. However, I am mainly lookingfor someone who knows something about the Marine Recon. I am trying to get into this and I see nothing that woud hinder me except my eyesight, but even that is not that bad. I would like to know how to get in this, what the training is like, and what you do being in it in general if at al possible. Thanks to everyone.

Well good luck Jordan, always thought you were an interesting poster and you will be missed.
The few Marines I know all have the same qualities and I'm not sure whether or not this is something the Marine training instilled in them or they had all along and the training enhanced it. Very patriotic individuals, who are not only very industrious but show a quiet determination and confidence. Will you be doing your training at Paris Island, they get some nasty weather conditions in the summer there.

OfflineHi Jordan, I also enjoy your posts from before I began visiting PUG and just recently. I am going to tell you the two sides of the coin for those who serve and their families. Take it for what it is worth to you and leave the rest. We have many members of my family that are military but only a few that have strictly served in the Marines. My sister's husband was a Marine during Viet Nam. Interestingly he volunteered and was not drafted. That tells you something right there about Marines. Her two sons are Marines as well. She, herself has never served but would have made the BEST Drill Instructor Parris Island ever saw!
This next paragraph is going to be graphic but I share it because it tells you something about the character of Marines. Please don't read if you think it would upset you. Her oldest son, Kevin was killed by an IED in Afghanistan in the winter of 2009. His was a long, drawn out death because they saved him at the site of the explosion and he was shipped to Landstuhl in Germany for stabilization and surgery and then he was shipped to Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio for further surgeries and "revisions". I joined my sister there for two weeks while he was being cared for at BAMC. Her husband had died 10 years prior and her youngest son, Daniel was at Parris Island for his Marine bootcamp at the time. They did actually release Daniel from bootcamp until I arrived and then they sent him back for another two weeks until his brother passed. Kevin was burned over 90% of his body and had lost both legs and an arm when he got to TX. He had surgery nearly every two days in which they made "revisions". This means that they had to cut back his limbs more and more to guard against infection. After 2 weeks, they said they might have to start making revisions on his one remaining hand and at that point the writing was on the wall. At one point they reduced the meds that were keeping him in his drug induced coma and we learned that his brain was functioning, he responded to commands and could communicate by blinking once for yes and twice for no. At first we were ecstatic and then quickly despondent when the full extent of this knowledge was realized. Kevin had joked prior to his first deployment that if he got his legs blown off that he wanted to have those ****ing awesome prosthetics that would make him run faster than his real legs ever could! After Kevin's death, his younger brother Daniel was given an option to cancel his enlistment with the Marines due to the circumstances, his response was not just no, but "hell, no"! My sister and I flew to Parris Island for Daniel's graduation while Kevin's body was escorted home to MA by GySgt Schiller (who attended to every need we had while in TX and followed thru until Kevin was laid to rest). Being a long time Army wife did not prepare me for seeing how the Marines take care of their own. The Marines are a very special breed, and I am honored to have had even the smallest glimpse inside this world. My nephew, Daniel deploys to Afghanistan this May. His Mom is worried but she knows this is what he wants to do. One of my favorite quotes is as follows: “The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!”- Eleanor Roosevelt.
Jordan, I wish you all the best in your endeavors. Be assured that bootcamp is gonna kick your ****, the food may be good but you won't have time to enjoy it and you will meet your future brothers who will always be your family. Semper Fidelis is not just a catch phrase, it is a way of life.
Take care and keep us posted on your decision.

OfflineIm not sure if I will be shippped to Parris island or San Diego yet, but I just wanted to thank everyone so far for the support. Over here on my end all i get is negative statements peopel give me not to join, and I really appreciate it that some people actually agree and encourage the decision, and are even proud of it. So thanks guys and in all sincerity just theses few words you guys are giving me really has boosed my confidence… I appreciate it.
OfflineJordan, I think some might be discouraging you because they are afraid for you. So don't write them off altogether, you may find that they will come around when they see that this is a decision you have taken some time to think over and research. Ultimately, it is you, and you alone that will be put through the physical and mental rigors of bootcamp, not them. Chances are that you will go to Iraq or Afghanistan so don't believe your recruiter if he promises you some cushy consulate job or some kind of enlistment bonus. Be prepared to work harder than you ever have and when you finally receive your eagle, globe and anchor you will have earned that sucker thru blood, sweat and tears. Try to find someone you trust that supports your goals and don't dwell on the naysayers. I will be sending up positive thoughts and prayers for you, take care.

My impression has always been the Marines that get the consulate jobs (VIP escort etc) are usually guys that are heavily metaled for performance in the field etc.

Parris Island! I have been there and it was warm in January so it will be sweltering in May while you are in bootcamp! Since you are from MS you will already be acclimated for the weather. Best of luck to you!
