OfflineI started this thread for all blues freaks hiding out here at PUG. It also felt a little disrespectful to Bill Sumlin where we were having an ongoing blues conversation (I'm sure he doesn't mind, but it just felt creepy lol).
If the mods want to they can move some of those posts here…or not.

OfflineNo, are they getting play on Bluesville? I LOOOVE Mud Morganfield (Muddy's oldest son) if you close your eyes, you'd swear it's Muddy himself and have his seventh son disc coming in on Monday. I can get it on Itunes but I'm not a fan of the way ITunes formats on my pc…long story, wrong thread for it here. I like Nathan James & the Rhythm Scratchers, Popa Chubby (hahahahaah the name cracks me up) among others. I enjoy it all, Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, the Three Kings (BB, Albert, Freddie), Robert Johnson, Slim Harpo, T Bone Walker…but you know who I can only take in small doses (mainly because all his music sounds the same) is John Lee Hooker, he was local out here living Oakland for the longest time, but I see him pop up on my little screen on the sirius and it's outta there. I also like Big Joe Turner and lots of the female acts…Laurie Manivan, Katie Webster, Ruthie Foster, Shemeka Copeland, Sapphire the Uppity Blueswomen….they kick a$$! Marcia Ball! Love it. I just got Bonnie Raitt's latest Slip Stream for $3.99 off Amazon and Santana's Latest for $5 (and NO it's an actual band release not that cd full of guests format crap he's been dwelling on lately).

OfflineJust got this Eric Sardinas cd in the mail today (because I couldn't download it off Amazon) and it's decent but I don't care for his singing style. I prefer people to sing in a natural voice this was my main complaint w/Clapton's from the cradle release, he was singing in what could only be called "black face" on all but one song (motherless child) and it RUINED (imho) the disc, because his playing was great….major disappointment. Same beef I have with this cd; the songs where he's not sounding all constipated, the tunes are flippin' solid and the instrumentals are off the chain…this cd's called Devil's Train and I bought it on the strength of an instrumental called "Sidewinder" FIERCE!! So I've listened to it 2x and about half the tracks are ruined by his hideous singing, the rest of the tunes are either instrumental OR not as "strenuous". Not too bad, his playing is very strong throughout but it was his first release and I'm led to understand that he got the singing thing under control.

Yes…they do get play time on Bluesville, but not as much as they used to….real shame.
Oh my gosh….Marcia Ball…..killer!!!!! Mamie Smith to me is one of the original female blues singers. I also enjoy Beverly "Guitar" Watkins. Rory Block can kick it too.
Too ad about your Eric Sardinas cd…..never could figure out why people sing like they are trying to pass a school bus out of their behinds……
WOW….Santana actually put out a real cd????? Nooooo….I don't believe it…. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

I agree with you on John Lee Hooker….and feel the same way about Susan Tedeschi….plus, I think she tries too hard to sound just like Bonnie Raitt…..which is not possible….
OfflineY'know, I'm sort of hit or miss on Bonnie Raitt, I have her luck of the draw cd (but honestly who doesn't) and somewhere intermingled amidst my Grateful Dead live stuff from my taping days I have an early 70s acoustic show with her where she gets into it with an audience member about her dog being in heat or something…have to see if I can find it. I REALLY like Tedeschi-Trucks band and even have a coupon from a sampler cd I bought which previews the upcoming live disc, 4-5 songs for $1.99 PLUS a $2.00 coupon inside toward the purchase of the main release itself. So it's a win win on that front. Not too familiar w/Tedeschi's work on her own. I've been REALLY jamming out to the Johnny Winter live stuff ZOINKS!!! More later.

OfflineSo Wrighty, what's your favorite stations?
My main presets on my sportster
(A band) Stern, BPM, Caliente, The Bridge, The Spectrum, En Vivo, Mad Dog Radio, Radio Margaritaville, BB King's Bluesville, Classic Vinyl.
(B Band) Alt Nation, Boneyard, Deep Tracks, 1st Wave, Grateful Dead, Underground Garage, SiriusXm U, Hair Nation, Octane, Lithium
(C Band) The Joint, Real Jazz, Spa, Chill, Watercolors, Outlaw Country, The Highway, Prime Country, Willie's Roadhouse, Elvis Radio.
I'm probaby going to juggle them around again soon as while I enjoy the presets I've got, I like to strategically locate them so that I can access more of my favorite channels from the first band. For instance I'm not a huge Jimmy Buffet fan, but locating that station gives me access to the dead (one slot below it) and classic rewind (one slot above). Speaking of Radio Margaritaville, that station is kind of like Bluesville in that i'm not a massive fan of the person the station is named after, but I love the other programming on the station.

OfflineThe main stations I listen to are Bluesville, which is my absolute, hands down, favorite station, then Classic Rewind, Classic Viny, Deep Tracks……but not Classic Rewind as much, since Pat St. John is on in the afternoon……that guy just drives me up the wall…..he has his yapper going way to much for me.
Then I get a huge kick out of Mojo Nixon on Outlaw Country…he cracks me up.
Then I also like things calmer too….so I listen to Pops, Symphony, Watercolors…..actually our tastes seem similar…kind of all over the place…. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

But back to artists…one of my favs, who typically was known more for rock, but was awesome at playing blues was Jeff Healey….sad loss when he passed a few years ago. Also enjoy James "Super Chikan" Johnson.
Have you ever heard of Lavay Smith? She is a great blues singer…..her group is more of a swing band, but are very good. They're called Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers…..great name….. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

Offlinehahahahahahaha….whatta name…hahahahahahahaahaha. Bonnie Raitt's new cd is pretty good, especially at the price I got it for ($3.99) and the Santana disc is growing on me…again for $5 it's well worth the investment. I did hear that artist you mentioned before, Mike Morgan& the Crawl…Texas Man, pretty good, I'll have to keep an eye out for those guys. I haven't delved into the JoeBon my brother sent me just yet, but the Walter Trout he sent me was fantastic! Got so much new stuff which I will review here, or not….let you know on them.

OfflineYes…please do review them…I'll be anxious to hear what you think about them.
I will definitely have to check out Walter Trout and Bonnie Raitt.
Ya know….Duke Robillard is pretty awesome.
Yeah, he does this one song where he imitates all the different guitar styles…i have the title written down elsewhere. Do you like Saffire? Those ladies crack me up and I really like their music too bad they broke up (ain't it always the way). Now personally, while I do enjoy the gritty guitar based stuff ( I guess that's classified as either Chicago or Texas), that "New Orleans" piano sorta ragtime stuff I like too.

OfflineOkay Monk….I'm thinking we were made from the same mold……our music tastes are so similar…..
I have heard of Saffire…..wonderful!!
Ragtime is a lost art…..have you ever listened to Jelly Roll Morton or Butch Thompson?
Yes on Jelly Roll Morton. But Marcia Ball, Leon Russell, Dr. John, Katie Webster etc…there's just something about it that captivates me, even some of that old Ray Charles & Fats Domino. In fact one of my favorite cds is Austin City Limits featuring Fats Domino. Actually, I own several Austin City Limits releases and they're all GREAT. Texas Tornados and David Byrne among them…usually great stuff.

Yeah did i hear them say that he cooks a pot of gumbo on stage when he's performing and that at the end of the show he shares it with the crowd? That's tight!!! That Duke Robillard song is called Blues a rama where he plays all those different styles….
Recently I've picked up A TON of blues stuff mostly stuff I'd heard on /bluesville. That what I like about satellite radio and pandora, that its a nice way to discover new music. Terrestrial radio has just gotten so bad with all the commercials, it's just about unlistenable.

OfflineI am a Blues Freak !!!
Check out :
Elmore James
Howlin' Wolf
Buddy Guy
Luther Allison
Too many to name !!
I know you are! I pretty sure you're the one who started that tribute over in the recently passed area weren't you?? I like all the artists you mentioned there's a few I'm not too crazy about like Bobby Blue Bland I can't stand that hock a loogie noise he makes and John Lee Hooker basically because all his music sounds the same. Both artists have tunes I like but there are times when I'm just like when will this be over.
