I picked up a book by Tony Buzan (Use Your Memory)a couple of weeks ago. The book contains 'systems' for improving memory and explains brain function and how to maximise and use your brains potential. I was initially dubious of the claims made by the author however, on completing the first couple of simple exersises I was amazed and excited to realise that the books claims are not 'bunkum'. The book was a revelation! I have noticed Derren Brown employs a lot of the techniques involved in his work/shows. I have tried to encourage a couple of friends to take a look but they gave me a look like this > /unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> ( they will regret that day when I can memorise a pack of cards, it wont be long!) I think you need to be open minded to try to take something like this on in the first place which is why ive posted about it here. Also Ive noticed a couple of threads discussing the potential of ones brain, if your interested in trying to use some more of that potential this book is for you! . Im not being dramatic when i say that Tony Buzan could dramatically improve the way you think and use your brain in all aspects of your life.

I cannot emphasise enough how much I recommend Tony Buzans books! Id be interested to know if anyone here has tried any of these mnemonics systems and if so how have they progressed. /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Huh – interesting. I used to have a nearly photographic memory. Now it sucks. I figure it's old age.

Oh and by the way – welcome to the site, and thanks for the nice things you've said about us. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I'm totally opposed to installing hard drives in human brains.

I meant to mention I am in no way associated with Buzan! I just needed to tell someone about his books they are so exciting. The idea that memory fades with age is a common misconception which the book dispels, if you really feel like you are not firing on all cylinders give the book a go! I guarantee it will help! IBM and other multinationals have even started using Buzans methods within their workforce. Its not just about memory either, its all based around using both sides of the brain to complement each other, so, by improving your memory skills you will also improve your creative thinking and artistic skills and so on. The site really is excellent by the way, so many interestig threads i dont know where to begin! /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

It's the same tired, hackneyed tricks that have been employed for decades by "memory coaches". It's the same stuff, repackaged for a fresh set of consumers.

Thats Mr Buzan to you heidi /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Theyre not 'tricks' the methods work. Its about expanding your mind and using your full potential, I dont see how that can be a bad thing. Some of the methods were used by the ancient greeks and romans so yeah the ideas have been around for a while. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

http://www.mindtools.com/memory.html

There are lots of free resources available without needing to purchase yet another "guru book". Like I said – it's the same information that has been available for decades. It's not "bad" or "wrong", it's just not new.

Im not saying its new and i know Buzan is not the only person out there representing mnemonics. I find the subject fascinating and Buzans book was the one I happened to pick up. A lot of the basic principles such as word association will be familiar to most people anyhoo. No need to purchase the book just lend it from the library like I did /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I only posted this thread because I noticed other threads in which people were pondering the brains potential and thats what mnemonics is all about. Id say its worth meditating over /wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Nice link btw, i can take my library books back now, its all online /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />
