Offlineits an 8 hour drive…i would want to leave in the middle of the night, so i could get to my
location mid to late morning.
One thing to take into consideration are check-in times, which at most hotel/motels are 3 or 4 p.m.
After driving all night, I wouldn't think that you would want to spend the day killing hours before you could check into your room.

That is a very good point. Most of the hotels would still have guests in the hotel from the night before. Unless they have an unoccupied room to place you, you would have to wait. The Check-out time at other hotels in town is 11:00 a.m. Our check-out time is noon. Check-in at other hotels is between 3:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Our hotel is 2:30 p.m. Whatever hotel you choose, they will tell you their check-in time when you make the reservation. If you make the reservation on-line, check that.

OfflineI'm 6 hours away, so that's an easy trek for me.
Carolyn, put me down for 2 of the suites!!!
If you can plan your trip, you really don't need to leave late at night……it's not hard to miss the traffic in the bigger cities.
Like Kim mentioned, it's usually quicker going through the city instead of the by-passes, everybody takes the by-pass.
Which suites? Five of them were here at the time of the battle, but they all have considerable activity. And, our two big ones sleep six. General Lee's Suite is in the building he used as his headquarters and sleeps six (two bedrooms and a pull-out couch). My favorite is the Inn on Seminary Ridge. It is a two-story house, with full kitchen, living room, dining area, two full bedrooms, jacuzzi and an outdoor padio area that sits on Day One battlefield. The Inn also sleeps six with the pull out couch in the living room. (Geez, I'm doing my marketing thing here.) You can see the suites on our Facebook page (Quality Inn at General Lee's Headquarters) which has photos of all the suites and the amenities associated with each.
In any event, when you let me know, I'll block those immediately on that day in our system when I can and hold them for you.

OfflineThis is the suite I will be staying in on March 19th. Can't wait. I like the idea of the balcony over-looking the day one battlefield. I will let everyone know how it goes when I return.
Kim, I hope you have a wonderful time, and I also hope you have decent weather.
Can't wait to hear how it goes.

You got them. I'll pm you when the time gets close to tell you when to call for particulars (like your real name, etc.).
FYI, the Buford Suite is where a Confederate soldier is seen and heard walking up and down the stairs. My friends were there and I missed seeing him by two minutes myself when I popped over to say hello to them. The Oakridge Suite is also active. Recently, we have had people complaining about colored lights flying around the room, someone walking on the roof (it is an inverted V roof) and the sounds of fighting and gunshots. The suite sits way in the back of the property up against the railroad cut and there are no cars that could even aim their lights back there. Also, it figures they would hear gunshots and men fighting because there was a huge struggle on that ground between the 6th Wisconsin (Iron Brigade) and the 2nd and 42nd Mississippi and the 55th North Carolina on the morning of July 1st.
But, the entire property (all the suites and rooms) sits on ground that was heavily contested on July 1st and then occupied by General Lee and the Confederates for the remainder of the three-day battle.

That's great…..and I truly appreciate it.
You can count on me coming anyways.
I was in Gettysburg 4 years ago, and have always wanted to go back.
This is the perfect way to get back.
My girlfriend and I always take a vacation away from the husbands and she's never been to Gettysburg…..now she'll finally get to see it. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />
OfflineOk, since people are already planning I guess we can get started.
The first two weekends in Aug 2011 are the Fri, Sat & Sun, 5,6 & 7 and Fri, Sat & Sun, 12, 13 & 14.
Since it is starting here then it is only fair that PUG members pick the weekend. So everyone place your votes…
Maybe Carolyn (G'burg Lady) can help pick the best one?
Here is the 2011 Calendar .

There are no major events (like the Bluegrass Festival which is held the 3rd weekend in August) that I can see scheduled for those first two weekends in August.
That first weekend in August they have an Annual Living History in the Street which encompasses various civil war organizations setting up areas around town showing life during the civil war. There will also most probably be a Living History Encampment set up at the Civil War Museum on Steinwehr Avenue. That would be some Union or Confederate encampment set up in front of the museum.
During the entire month of August, the National Park will still be having their free Interpretive Battlefield Program, which are free ranger walks covering various actions on the battlefield during the day. The Park also has a free "campfire" program in the early evening in the summer at a little ampitheater located on the battlefield where rangers give free talks on various actions and/or prominent characters from the battle. Also, every Saturday they have a Farmer's Market in the Square, which is located in the heart of little downtown Gettysburg. Depending on schedule, you might also find two areas on the battlefield where reenactors have been given special permission to camp on the battlefield and those reenactors encourage visitors to stop by and see what it was like for the soldiers at that time.
Of course, there are lots of things to do, but as far as I can see, there are no major events where we would be inundated with even more visitors than usual those two weekends.
I'll give you more ideas of things you can do during the day and evenings no matter what weekend you choose as we get closer to the event. And, there are three ways to tour the battlefield. I'll post all of them, from the more expensive to the more economical, and tell you the advantages of each of them. I'll also tell you the most fun restaurants with the best food. We are only a few miles from Maryland and the Mason-Dixon line, so crab is the big thing here. There are two very historic restaurants (from the 1700's) that can be a bit pricey for some, but I can tell you how you can still have a great meal there by going for lunch so it won't kill your finances, tell you the best things on their menu and have a wonderful historic experience too. I can also tell you where to get a great, cheap breakfast where the locals go. But, no use going through all that now.
If anyone has any questions, from now until the event, do not hesitate to pm me. I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have as best as I can.

OfflineI think the suggestion of the first weekend in Aug 2011 is probably the best. Aug 5, 6 & 7, 2011.
One reason is the beginning of school and the official end of summer soon approaching at that time. The first weekend gives everyone a buffer zone between the gathering, the end of summer and the beginning of school. I have started a Facebook Fan page for responses and questions.
I also don't like to be presumptuous nor put people out there intentionally . I will leave it up to the individual person and the Admin of PUG on how much they want to be involved. I will not refer people to pug for this event nor mention anyone personally. I would hope those who are genuinely interested to go out on their own to promote the gathering if they feel it is a good thing.
So to kick start this thing, I have made the decision that the first weekend will be it. August 5, 6 & 7 2011. That's about a year and a half to plan. Plenty of time to promote and gather interest or make adjustments if need be. I hope you will all tell your friends. I will post a link to the Facebook Fan page as soon as it is published.
