So Tanner went to log in to Facebook and found that his account had been disabled by FB. Apparently, they spammed him daily for weeks asking him to enter his high school. He finally gave into the spam and entered the high school that he will start attending in September, and FB promptly disabled his account for "lying" about his high school. They truly suck.

I'm probably going to regret this but….what difference would it make? Is it because of his age? I don't get them why do they even NEED that info at all? Bastages! /angry.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

They have some "verification" process. But he didn't lie. He responded to repeated spam with his high school. And if they are banning people on FB for being dishonest, then maybe they need to ban all of the people with 20 year old pictures, those who lie about their income level, those with fake names, those who pretend to be nice but are really douchebags, etc.

FB claims they don't "need" the high school information – but Tanner said it was several times a day spam until he just finally gave in.

but thats what I dont understand…how can they verify it???

maybe he moved…maybe he got a variance…maybe he's going to a private school

its not like the schools are providing FB with their student lists.

how stupid…and i know of people with "fake" accounts so obviously honesty is not necessary /rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Yeah – it's tough to figure out. I guess they do stuff like this to control spammers. As I was trying to figure out why Tanner had been disabled, I discovered that FB does a lot of arbitrary disabling of accounts for asinine reasons. Poking to many people was one that popped up repeatedly. I knew there was a reason I didn't poke people.

The problem is that they encourage people to use FB as their online social center. Then they disable the accounts permanently for no good reason without any recourse. Niiiiicccceeee.

I remember reading an article once about people

who got booted from Facebook because they decided

the people's last names didnt sound "real". Even

those these were real people who have unusual

last names, and no matter what they did to prove

they were "real" they couldnt get back on. Finally

one girl in the article made up a "real" last name

and was able to get back on. It's all so crazy.

This is the email they sent to Tanner's request for them to explain why they banned him and reinstate his account:

Hi,

In order to receive support, you must reply to this email to verify that you are the owner of the Facebook account that you referenced in your inquiry. This security step must be completed before Facebook can respond to your inquiry.

In addition, note that Facebook will only be able to provide assistance if you are writing in from the email address that you used to log in to your Facebook profile that's disabled. If your disabled profile was registered under a different email address, then you will need to respond directly from that email address. To do this, take the following steps:

• Copy the exact email address you see in the "From" field of this email (ending in @support.facebook.com).

• Log in to the email account under which your disabled Facebook profile was registered.

• Compose a new email. Paste the address you copied (ending in @support.facebook.com) into the "To" field, let us know you're responding from your disabled email address in the body, and click "Send."

Once we have this information, we will take further steps to assist you. Remember that writing in multiple times will not result in a faster response. Once you submit your initial request, it is placed in a queue and responded to accordingly.

Lastly, you may not create another account using a different email address while you are waiting for a response. Creating more than one Facebook account is a violation of our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, and violations of this rule could result in all of your accounts being permanently disabled.

Thanks,

The Facebook Team

Facebook is having an awful lot of PR problems lately. Perhaps crap like this is why.

When he went to login, it said "account disabled by admin" and gave a help link. Following the helplink took him to a bunch of FAQs about the "high school network." Further research led to a number of people who have been disabled due to the high school network for the same reason. I would have seen if his account was hijacked and became spammy. Apparently this is one of the many crazy, arbitrary, capricious and user-unfriendly policies they have in place at FB.

The other day I got an email that my facebook account had been disabled. I read the email since I was bored and it went on about how I need to do this and that to reactivate it. It included using their form to log in. I took a look at the so called link and it led to some site that is not even related to facebook. I figured it was a spam to get access to my face book account. I deleted the email without responding.

And for the kicker, I don't even have a face book account.

This one really tickled me, Heidi. One of my friends has a person listed in their friends section named (and I kid you not) "Seymour Buttz". Now I know full on that this guys name is not Seymour Buttz, but FB couldn't figure that out? I have a Farmville neighbor who is registered as Marlboro Mann…

I'd say this is all arbitrary…Facebook pulling the wings off of certain flies and letting the others buzz around at will…

Oh, and Chad…

I'm pretty sick of them too. While reading through this entire thread, I almost came to the conclusion that I would disable my own Facebook account just to get some housekeeping done. It does keep an insomniac company though.

I've been "told" that's a brand of straight porn, but I can not at this time admit…er, confirm that report!
